Yeah, I have a real soft spot for Skot. He had such a unique and funny, yet seemingly effortless style. Really great high/low brow combination music taste. I've created playlists based on some of the threads/mixes he made.

back in the noise board days when hipster dudes impressed me and all i wanted to hear was music made in the 1970s his posts were invaluable

the cat needs to start paying for its own cbd (map), Sunday, 3 July 2022 02:52 (one year ago) link

he was hip-conversant but dug deeper and was charmingly wide-eyed about everything

the cat needs to start paying for its own cbd (map), Sunday, 3 July 2022 02:54 (one year ago) link

I didn't/don't really think of him as a hipster, but "charmingly wide-eyed about everything" otm.

i think i wanted to copy that for a few years but eventually i grew into my own sensibility, which is a clubbed up, dilettantish mess, from which i ask compelling questions such as "isn't this vocal house track from 2012 transporting?!??"

the cat needs to start paying for its own cbd (map), Sunday, 3 July 2022 03:01 (one year ago) link

oh to be clear i wasn't calling him a hipster at all, just that he hung out in noise board threads with posters who absolutely were hipsters, who i was impressed by.

i miss skot being here too, one of my favorite writers of all time. his emp presentation on todd terry from… oh, maybe ten years ago now???? was hilarious and thoughtful in equal measure

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Sunday, 3 July 2022 12:00 (one year ago) link

his 2007 paper at emp was my favourite of that year (along with nate patrin's)

I loved his contribution to the Marooned book; he described how Divine Styler's Spiral Walls Containing Autumns of Light was itself like a life preserver for him in a time of loss. In fact his writing was so evocative that, listening to the record, I could only hear it "as if he was listening too".

Halfway there but for you, Sunday, 3 July 2022 14:36 (one year ago) link

Dylannnn has a twitter? What is it

I was thinking the other day I hadn't noticed Granny Dainger around in a while.

Was going to say ums but appears he's exclusively posting about basketball in recent months.

Got quite a shock scrolling to the bottom of this tweet about a very interesting looking article:

In 1965, Malcolm X visited the town of Smethwick following a racist election campaign. Described by the Indian Workers' Association as a “shot in the arm for the anti-racist struggle in Britain”, it’s a powerful story of solidarity.
