Wondering if When Rivers Meet is a jam session between members of Big River and Green River Band

china's answer to gazza (Matt #2), Thursday, 30 June 2022 20:51 (one year ago) link

I'd imagine Nine Below Zero could be fun but no idea how authentic the lineup are.

I'd go and see Stray for sure, they've been playing on and off for what passes for the Groundhogs these days and I think are all veterans (although might not have all played together in the past).

I think Geordie are the whole band less Brian Johnson so again I'd probably go and see them.

I love how the line up from that website is just a wonky screenshot of an Excel spreadsheet.

Del Amitri?

Lol

I thought everyone loved 10cc and Billy Ocean on this board!

I thought someone on my street was playing Oasis records very loudly earlier on, but it turned out to be an Oasis tribute act playing at a fake bands festival in the local park.
seems to be part of this setup, maybe it pays well? https://www.fakefestivals.co.uk/events

I avoided pop culture for most of the 2000s and 2010s so I'm out of touch, but I was under the impression that Scouting for Girls were legitimately successful not all that long ago. It's odd to see them on a line-up underneath Cast and Billy Ocean. And that they don't have their own logo. A bit of Googling reveals that they were part of the landfill indie wave of the late 2000s, along with the Pigeon Detectives and probably lots of other bands. 2010 doesn't feel like ancient history but I suppose in the world of pop music it is. And yet their "best of" 2022 tour has a lot of arenas, so perhaps they just really like gigging.

Tell a lie. Back in 2013 I did a blog post about Virgin's Brief History of Ambient series, and I made this graph:
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rSyoKElyjNo/Uo0chzucK0I/AAAAAAAAKNw/ax9FY9qO4Wk/s1600/pigeon.jpg

I was trying to draw a parallel between landfill indie and the wave of ambient music that was a thing during a brief period in the early 1990s when it was possible for Aphex Twin and Enya to appear on the front cover of Billboard at the same time:
https://i.imgur.com/K6M5szS.png

So I must have been tangentally aware of them. The overall trajectory of their chart positions is a stark reminder of the fact that human beings do not become fully-formed until their thirties. The Christians is one of those bands that I only know of from the Now That's What I Call Music compilations, along with Hue & Cry - the compilers were convinced that they would be huge - and Sam Brown, Then Jerico etc.

Sly Fox and the Hustlers are some WRONG DUDE energy. Toying with the idea of commenting the Let's Go All the Way video on their facebook page, but I worry it would somehow lead to these dorks trying to cover it, badly.

Odd event to have a band named after a Bad Brains song

Not sure it's the worst festival line up but if I stayed there for a single day I would probably be dead, and not really the way I would choose to go.

link.exposing.politically (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 7 November 2022 19:26 (one year ago) link

Kinda bugs me that SOAD, a 100% nostalgia act, are headlining over Korn and Deftones, who are still putting out new albums (and in the case of Deftones, GOOD new albums). Also, I feel like Iggy should/could have been wedged in there somehow...

but also fuck you (unperson), Monday, 7 November 2022 19:33 (one year ago) link

lol they should put that fest on a boat, raise anchor and just let it drift around the ocean. Don't need no dock to rock!

Yeah, there are a good dozen or so bands I'd happily see there, lol. And Hoobastank.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 8 November 2022 21:04 (one year ago) link

WTF with that lineup. I would happiily go see Killing JOke and Sisters though. And Melvins I guess. I guess Mike Patton is over his agoraphobia?

not bad necessarily but very bizarre. Tyler Childers gets top billing over Robert Plant and Chic? 100 Gecs, Yola, Phil Lesh and Digable Planets? Who is this booked for?

POLIZISTEN VERSINKEN IM SCHLAMM (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 17 January 2023 16:23 (one year ago) link

idk, feels like 2002-2003 early Bonnaroo vibes

not xp: no one knows!

POLIZISTEN VERSINKEN IM SCHLAMM (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 17 January 2023 16:28 (one year ago) link

I dunno, Bonnaroo marketed to jam band kids with the idea that jam band kids have wide listening palattes. That audience didn't go anywhere I don't think

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 17 January 2023 16:30 (one year ago) link

a lot of large multi-day festivals just schedule a little bit of something for everyone instead of going down one specific lane. kills me when kids (including people up to early 20s here, now) complain that a main stage of a local festival is a snoozefest for the afternoon. that's when the middle aged and their small children just sit in a lawn chair and passively listen as their kids run around

mh, Tuesday, 17 January 2023 16:30 (one year ago) link

maybe you're right but this doesn't seem inclusive so much as chaotic, especially wrt to billing placement. Tenacious D goes sixth? Noah Kahan ahead of Flaming Lips playing Yoshimi? And who ARE 50% of these acts? i recognize only five names in the bottom nine lines, i probably need to listen more. maybe there's a unifying theme of crunchy jam that is going over my head

POLIZISTEN VERSINKEN IM SCHLAMM (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 17 January 2023 16:34 (one year ago) link

that all said, there's at least a full day of sets i would happily go to here

POLIZISTEN VERSINKEN IM SCHLAMM (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 17 January 2023 16:34 (one year ago) link

old people will see the Flaming Lips play earlier in the evening and leave before the young person act they've never heard of to beat traffic

mh, Tuesday, 17 January 2023 16:36 (one year ago) link

vulfpeck is a jokey, chops-y, music school grad funk pastiche act, some discussion here: Vulfpeck - C/D?

sault bae (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 17 January 2023 16:36 (one year ago) link

Who is the "young person act" in the top five lines?

POLIZISTEN VERSINKEN IM SCHLAMM (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 17 January 2023 16:38 (one year ago) link

imagining the cognitive dissonance of setting up a day of going from Digable Planets to Vieux Farka to 100 Gecs to Yonder Mountain String Band to Chic

POLIZISTEN VERSINKEN IM SCHLAMM (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 17 January 2023 16:40 (one year ago) link

and do you go to the Yola stage or the Gex stage?

POLIZISTEN VERSINKEN IM SCHLAMM (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 17 January 2023 16:40 (one year ago) link

forks, this is fucking Bonnaroo, I don't know what to tell you

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 17 January 2023 16:49 (one year ago) link

i mean, if you're arguing "it's just two decade old bonnaroo refried" okay, but it's not the current bonnaroo by any stretch of the imagination!
