oh I didn't count mutual funds

I have our emergency fund, but I don't regularly add to it unless we have to use it for some reason. It just sits in a "high" yield savings account.

No credit card debt atm is a huge plus.

Yeah, I manage to get to that place every few years and then Something Bad Happens and it falls apart until I'm $10-15K in the hole again.

I've barely been out of my overdraft for more than a few weeks in the last decade. But I don't get too stressed about it anymore. Had some quite big wins on my bookie account recently but it all had to go on new furniture to replace what my son had broken and I'm back in that unstable -1800 into a 2 grand overdraft zone. Should have a better safety buffer than that in case the fridge or the washing machine conk out, but my credit rating is decent enough to get some shit deal from Currys. The temp control button in my fridge was flashing some fault code the other day and I was despairing for a few hours and then it stopped and I praised the Lord for bailing me out again.

Zero, but I don't really care that much? Aside from my grandmother who had Alzheimer's, everyone in my family has worked until they dropped dead so it seems normal - and Alzheimer's grandma was still working at Wal-Mart until it was untenable.

Given my medical history and that of my family I don't think I've got a realistic shot of living past 'retirement age' anyway.

nothing but i work in an industry that chronically underpays ppl and live in a city where the cost of living continues to skyrocket so y’know i’m not blaming myself for it

Maybe 15% or sometimes more. And over the last year, I’ve been regularly investing part of it in a low cost tracker fund (Vanguard) - which is down 15-25%.

I’m hoping I live long enough to see my investments come good.

My refrigerator stopped worked forever ago but it's all good, the freezer is a refrigerator now. Maybe I ought use the fridge side as a bookshelf or something.

The only issue really is when I buy popsicles I have to eat all of them.

My fridge is broken as well: the freezer section is unusable with a broken handle and the seal started to come off very quickly. Bit if I replaced the fridge, I really ought to replace the kitchen flooring, and before I do that it might be better to replace the whole kitchen which is over 30 years old and knackered.

By such reflections I end up doing nothing - and thereby saving money, at least for the time being.

20-25 percent--if I live as long as my mother's mother I'm going to need all that and more.

Oh huh, I missed this thread. Not saving anything at the moment -- my day job evaporated a few months ago but with no CC debt, no car payment and as of last year no house payment, I decided to coast a while on just bar income. Breaking even, more or less. I'll probably start job hunting before the end of the year.

WmC, Sunday, 10 July 2022 00:49 (one year ago) link

I missed it too. I had been saving the maximum to get a full 401k match with previous employer (7% to get a 3% match) and negligible amounts in a savings account while focusing on gradually paying down a huge amount of credit card debt. Then, I was eligible for an early retirement package from previous employer and didn't think twice - 6 months of salary to leave? Sure!!

I took about 3 weeks off, knowing I wasn't ready to stop working. Did 18 months of consulting work, got all my cc debt paid off, paid off the car, bought a place to live for cash and saved....nothing really. Still had a substantial cushion though, which - I've never in my life had. Took a hard look at the consulting and the industry and suddenly a job posting somewhere I never thought would need a person like me opened up. Took a 75% pay cut and a 3000% stress cut.

I should be saving more than I am, I'm sure. A financial consultant would have palpitations. I cashed out 2 previous 401ks so only have ~9 years worth of that 10% stored up. But I'm saving around 15% and I'm comfortable with it. Will probably retire for real in 5 years when I hit 67. We'll see.

About 10-15% of my salary, 8% with 8% employer match into my pension. However, we’ve just completed on a house and have a 4 month old kid so the nest egg has taken a royal thrashing this year.

3 years ago, $500-$1000 a month.

Now, nothing to negative.

My salary hasn't changed. Life has.

Thank God I had a lot shocked away in 2020

My current retirement plan is "drop dead at 60"
