Ha well played. Yeah spurs fans are all out for Victor. I think this is a war move by the spurs

Heez, Thursday, 30 June 2022 00:14 (one year ago) link

War = wise

Heez, Thursday, 30 June 2022 00:14 (one year ago) link

I’m gonna put the kids to bed, get baked and watch Murray highlights

Heez, Thursday, 30 June 2022 00:15 (one year ago) link

i think the spurs FO looked at the next two years and said "we're gonna need to extend keldon johnson next year and then dejounte will get a max deal the year after that" and said "thats probably not a very good team with those two guys taking up almost half the cap". spurs apparently REALLY like josh primo *shrugs* and they have a million guards so hitting the reset button with a chance at landing a franchise player in 2023 (not just wembanyama, could be scoot, thompson twins, nick smith) while developing the youngest team in the league was the best way to avoid the play-in purgatory

yeah maybe draft an 80s synth pop band great idea

lag∞n, Thursday, 30 June 2022 00:18 (one year ago) link

lmao amen and ausar are real ppl!

terence trent d'ilfer (m bison), Thursday, 30 June 2022 00:21 (one year ago) link

dj wont be as high usage with trae on the team (and presumably also having some other weapons like jc) so i dont think he's gonna average 21 pts or 9 asts a game like he did this past year. he had the ball in his hands A LOT, especially once derrick got traded. but he should still be very productive. he and hunter and okongwu will have some great defensive potential.

terence trent d'ilfer (m bison), Thursday, 30 June 2022 00:21 (one year ago) link

i think the best argument for the hawks making this trade is that giannis aside the bucks are getting old, the heat are pretty old or at least have an old star, the sixers have an old star and a 300 pound big man with terrible injury history, the nets are old, the bulls are pretty old. meanwhile trae is 23 and murray is 25. if the pairing works they still might not get out of round 1 the next few seasons, but perhaps in the next era of the east they have ample room to ascend into the top 3 or 4 teams. their cap should be pretty clean, all their big money deals are movable.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 30 June 2022 00:26 (one year ago) link

And what ever happened to homerism. It’s a bummer everyone likes to be all cool and analytical about the nba now

― Heez, Wednesday, June 29, 2022 8:08 PM (fifteen minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

it kind of is, but the fascinating/painful thing about the nba is how hard team building is. by making this move, the hawks have one more bullet in a collins trade. and that's probably their live or die team around trae young's prime.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 30 June 2022 00:27 (one year ago) link

spurs fans on twitter are having a conniption like this was the kawhi trade all over again. he was the spurs best player but they won 34 games and they got smoked by NO in the play-in. dj had a miserable game shooting (6 of 20 iirc). him playing second option on atl is a better role for him.

terence trent d'ilfer (m bison), Thursday, 30 June 2022 00:29 (one year ago) link

― terence trent d'ilfer (m bison), Wednesday, June 29, 2022 8:21 PM (four minutes ago)

there's something about the hawks and defense that almost transcends personnel to me, i wonder if it's a function of having your best player be someone who kinda doesn't care about defense and/or is flat out terrible at it. like their defensive personnel isn't great -- they're young and not very physically developed or imposing -- but there's some sort of root issue to the overall way they play basketball that i feel like is different from teams like boston, miami etc. they should certainly (hopefully) be better on defense but it feels like they need a whole attitude/cultural overhaul or something to me. will be curious to see how it plays out

J0rdan S., Thursday, 30 June 2022 00:31 (one year ago) link

They fuck up this year Nate’s toast

heez, cover your ears.

they're soft as hell

lol i just watch a very analytical youtube on this trade and theres all these hawks fans in the comments like this deal is nothing less than an a+ three first round picks isnt a lot

lag∞n, Thursday, 30 June 2022 00:37 (one year ago) link

twolves felt like that for years and then turned it around this year

ciderpress, Thursday, 30 June 2022 00:45 (one year ago) link

hawks trade for patbev challenge

mookieproof, Thursday, 30 June 2022 00:56 (one year ago) link

I guess as Boston sports fans you don’t have the situation of not being able to fill half a stadium most of your franchise’s history. I appreciate the irrational hawks fans. It’s nice to have folks onboard

Heez, Thursday, 30 June 2022 01:04 (one year ago) link

On the other hand I’m a UGA grad and I couldn’t give a shot that they won a national championship

Heez, Thursday, 30 June 2022 01:05 (one year ago) link

hey man i got to see the rise of the new england patriots from regional joke to regional deity, i totally get it

call all destroyer, Thursday, 30 June 2022 01:20 (one year ago) link

the patriots were the absolute pits

lag∞n, Thursday, 30 June 2022 01:21 (one year ago) link

Y’all are the reason I don’t watch football anymore. Though I can’t really blame you former that one. The braves in the 90s was my jam but the relentless postseason losses burned me out. So now the hawks are all I got 🥲

Heez, Thursday, 30 June 2022 01:22 (one year ago) link

hawks arent really a bad franchise they just have never been great and atl has never been a good basketball town, which are not unrelated points

lag∞n, Thursday, 30 June 2022 01:23 (one year ago) link

I moved to Atlanta in 88 when Dominique was there and since then there’s never been anything close to where they are now. Not saying they’re great but from an ownership and management standpoint it feels close to that

Heez, Thursday, 30 June 2022 01:27 (one year ago) link

And Trae’s fun as fuck to watch warts and all

Heez, Thursday, 30 June 2022 01:28 (one year ago) link

yeah it's funny, i feel like there have been plenty of hawks teams that were memorable for one reason or another but they've never made that deep run that turns people into lifelong fans.

some of the recent playoff home crowds have looked fun on tv though. i think it could happen.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 30 June 2022 01:28 (one year ago) link

Yeah crowds are no where near as bad as they were when I was going to games

Heez, Thursday, 30 June 2022 01:29 (one year ago) link

having an entertaining star player goes a long way but yeah they have to win to seal the deal

lag∞n, Thursday, 30 June 2022 01:30 (one year ago) link

if you look at recent trades this trade could be considered "market value" for a 1-time all star type player

anthony davis, james harden (when he went to the nets), paul george all commanded considerably more than 3 firsts and a swap.

jrue holiday went for three firsts and two swamps. vucevic went for two firsts and a recent top 10 pick (wendell carter) on his rookie deal so functionally three firsts. james harden (to the sixers) went for two firsts, an all star, two rotation players, and daryl morey's left nut.

aaron gordon went for RJ hampton in his rookie year and a first, so functionally two firsts

i'm sure both sides looked at all this and thought three firsts and a swap was basically the going rate for a player of murray's caliber. i just don't know how any of those deals were actually worth it

J0rdan S., Thursday, 30 June 2022 01:32 (one year ago) link

on a related note, was this a good trade?

The Miami Heat completed a four-team trade that allows them to sign All-Star guard Jimmy Butler to a four-year, $142 million contract, league sources told ESPN on Monday.

The Heat are sending center Hassan Whiteside to the Portland Trail Blazers, guard Josh Richardson to the Philadelphia 76ers and a protected 2023 first-round pick to the Los Angeles Clippers

J0rdan S., Thursday, 30 June 2022 01:33 (one year ago) link

the one that was worth it was the one where the bucks decided jrue holiday was the missing piece and turned out to be right

call all destroyer, Thursday, 30 June 2022 01:35 (one year ago) link

yeah, and even that one was dicey

terence trent d'ilfer (m bison), Thursday, 30 June 2022 01:36 (one year ago) link

and i'm sure there's a post of me somewhere on here saying "man, that's a lot for jrue holiday."

call all destroyer, Thursday, 30 June 2022 01:36 (one year ago) link

yeah sorry i meant "i just don't know how many of those deals were actually worth it" not "how any" ... obv the jrue one was worth it. we'll see on the anthony davis one

J0rdan S., Thursday, 30 June 2022 01:37 (one year ago) link

i think bc of the cap, cba, and the max deals players can get its just so hard to get that mix of players to make a title contender, or even just get a bit better than before. getting that last guy comes at a high price.

terence trent d'ilfer (m bison), Thursday, 30 June 2022 01:38 (one year ago) link

Also the hawks were in a bad spot so I see how some could see a bit of desperation. If the hawks field that same lineup next year it’s just gonna be the same mediocre outcome. Schlenk outright stated that he was going to make major moves so sitting pat was not an option

heez idk if u read nekias duncan but hes v v good, and this is as good an analysis of dejounte's strengths and weaknesses as ive seen

i agreed with schenk’s assessment of the team & found his public frankness refreshing. it’s just a major bet

J0rdan S., Thursday, 30 June 2022 02:18 (one year ago) link

schlenk*

J0rdan S., Thursday, 30 June 2022 02:19 (one year ago) link

thanks bise that was good. i'm not sure why everyone's focused on trae playing off the ball and not dejounte. i would love to see them push him into a slasher that feeds off trae drives. trae's ability to beat most ppl off the dribble should not be curtailed.

Heez, Thursday, 30 June 2022 02:27 (one year ago) link

and if that heat series showed us anything it's that teams realize they can easily beat the hawks by attacking trae and getting the ball out of his hands. that's a little tougher now

Heez, Thursday, 30 June 2022 02:29 (one year ago) link

one axiom of nba player evaluation that seems more and more important to me is that you shouldn't assume players will change their behavior even as their circumstances change. so the idea of trae young playing off-ball is conceptual until i see that he is actually willing to do it.

maybe atl could package capela plus one of the young kids to try rudy gobert?

moullet, Thursday, 30 June 2022 13:38 (one year ago) link

as we've seen with utah rudy does not make a bad defensive team into a good one beyond the regular season

ciderpress, Thursday, 30 June 2022 13:43 (one year ago) link

Multiple teams — including Atlanta, Minnesota, Brooklyn, Chicago and Philadelphia — are expected to compete for PJ Tucker in free agency. All are expected to offer the full mid-level/TPMLE exception. He is unlikely to return to Miami, per sources.

i find this fascinating

J0rdan S., Thursday, 30 June 2022 16:55 (one year ago) link

it really is crazy. he looked pretty cooked there for a year or two but now is the most sought after old head. no one should be offering more than a two year with a team option in the 2nd year.

Spottie, Thursday, 30 June 2022 17:02 (one year ago) link

ultimate "got that dog in him" role player right now

terence trent d'ilfer (m bison), Thursday, 30 June 2022 17:13 (one year ago) link

he was really good for the heat in the regular season, he shot the three well but they also allowed him to expand his game, he had the second highest 2 pt % and second highest assists per game of his career. but i felt like his limitations were felt in the playoffs, his role in the celtics series really decreased over time. he played great defense on tatum in game 3 but he didn't even play 20 minutes in game 7, oladipo started to eat up his minutes as the heat looked for more offense & ball creation. maybe if lowry wasn't so bad tucker could've been on the floor more idk. also, anecdotally speaking it seemed like he narrowly missed suffering a severe leg injury on several occasions last year. like he would hobble off and you'd go "oh boy" but then he'd return and play through it. the way he plays at that age it just always feels like you're walking a tightrope
