Take a look at me now!

Build My Gallows Hi Hi Hi (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 29 June 2022 16:05 (one year ago) link

now I imagine a Diana Ross cover of "Don't Lose My Number."

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 June 2022 16:19 (one year ago) link

The only reason he covered that song was because he once saw someone hurrying love, and he wanted to invite them to his show and then make them die out of shame.

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 16:24 (one year ago) link

speaking of: her cover of “I Will Survive” was way better than her versions of her own hits at Glastonbury last weekend, but I doubt that controversial for anyone who’s watched that performance

doubt that*’s* controversial

1998 is a terrible year for music, much worse than 1997 or 1999

Portrait Of A Dissolvi Ng Drea M (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 29 June 2022 18:16 (one year ago) link

I don’t know about much worse, but I agree it’s even weaker than those two. I’m a little surprised by the 1998 love on here, but a lot of it seems to be from folks who were a certain age around them.

Bunheads Pilot Enthusiast (morrisp), Wednesday, 29 June 2022 18:55 (one year ago) link

I was 15 in 1998 and can’t stand most of the shit they’re talking about in that thread lol

brimstead, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 20:09 (one year ago) link

Watching Roisin Murphy's performance from Zagreb earlier this month, I think she's got the Bowie vibe but is far more talented and charismatic than he was.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 29 June 2022 20:11 (one year ago) link

u fiend

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 20:34 (one year ago) link

I don't think there's all that much love on the 1998 thread tbh!

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Wednesday, 29 June 2022 20:44 (one year ago) link

I think most popstars are much more charismatic than Bowie

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 20:45 (one year ago) link

OK, that may be a little overstated.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 29 June 2022 20:50 (one year ago) link

I was glad to see ms Ross standing up and getting recognition and being able to tell that people liked her, but I can't say that she sang her songs well. I was also disappointed with the level of her skills at talking to a crowd. I would say "maybe she was nervous" if that didn't sound daft for someone so important.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 21:01 (one year ago) link

Someone so important and experienced. She's been doing this since the late 50s.

Hasn't she always been terrible at crowd work (and human interaction in general)? I thought this was common knowledge.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 June 2022 21:06 (one year ago) link

Oh, I totally agree with that

Bunheads Pilot Enthusiast (morrisp), Wednesday, 29 June 2022 21:16 (one year ago) link

and I love EIG.

That is correct

one month passes...

Because everything is being reassessed lately, especially with nostalgia goggles...

"If You Could Only See" by Tonic has really pretty lead guitar in the chorus, and there is also this cool Swervedriver-esque guitar part that shows up a few times during a bridge.

Is this song well liked or hated? I really have no idea.

In general when it comes to radio-rock music composition, that bittersweet yearning 90s alt rock style is still more appealing to me than the "whoa-oh" car commercial style of the 00s, despite nostalgic bias.

Evan, Wednesday, 24 August 2022 18:28 (one year ago) link

no I’m with you, that is a great chorus

brimstead, Wednesday, 24 August 2022 20:10 (one year ago) link

Tour De France Etapes > Autobahn

frogbs, Thursday, 25 August 2022 03:15 (one year ago) link

I hated the single before that one ("OPen Up Your Eyes"), so I was pleasantly surprised when "If You Could Only See" came out after it.

it screams 1997. nice little 70s pop/rock hook

Toonie Orlando (Neanderthal), Thursday, 25 August 2022 03:20 (one year ago) link

Desire is a preferable album to Blood on the Tracks. The cover looks better, The rougher production sounds better, violin vs. harmonica is really no contest, and I love Emmylou's voice always everywhere. Blood has some stone cold classics on it for sure, but as a full album, Desire is a much better listening experience.

BrianB, Friday, 26 August 2022 16:11 (one year ago) link

Agree re Desire, and re Kraftwerk, as an album Tour De France > Autobahn - it's actually my favourite Kraftwerk album.

mike t-diva, Friday, 26 August 2022 16:30 (one year ago) link

Radio-Activity > Trans-Europe Express (mostly for "The Hall of Mirrors," which is an incredibly fucked up and depressing song) > Techno Pop > Autobahn > The Man-Machine > Computer World > Tour de France Soundtracks

I've never heard the first three albums and I don't care. And the first thing I heard was The Mix, and I still love it.

Every couple of years, Blondie comes up for re-consideration, and this week they're getting the deluxe box set treatment. Each time, I make a dutiful attempt, and one or two singles aside, I just...don't hear it. They might be the most musically minor canonized band I can think of.

but also fuck you (unperson), Friday, 26 August 2022 20:44 (one year ago) link

My older brother brought Radio-Activity and The Man-Machine home after his high school art teacher used to play them in drawing class. They're certainly my favourite Kraftwerk albums, as a kid I thought it was only natural that you would start a record with two minutes of (synthesized) Geiger counter.

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 26 August 2022 21:19 (one year ago) link

anyone who puts computer world second to last is a musical idiot imo

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 26 August 2022 22:02 (one year ago) link

Blondie is one of the few bands I would spring for a deluxe box set of at this point in my life. My love for that band goes beyond reason. Of course, it has a lot to do with the time of my life I discovered them. I still remember, at 13 in 1978, dropping the needle on Parallel Lines and hearing Debbie launch into "Hanging on the Telephone." At that point in my life, I'd heard the Runaways, but I really didn't know women could make the kind of music Debbie was making. And I'll freely admit I was crushing on her hard--still am, truth be told.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 26 August 2022 22:11 (one year ago) link

I've had a couple posters on my Facebook wall bitch about that box set. Whatever.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 26 August 2022 22:27 (one year ago) link

Complaining about its existence? I think it’s cool if box sets are still happening for anyone! (but I also thought they were more of a holiday season thing)

Porcine-lina of the Pig Oceans (morrisp), Friday, 26 August 2022 22:40 (one year ago) link

This one has been a long time coming.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 26 August 2022 22:42 (one year ago) link

No -- complaining about Blondie (which I understand but don't share).

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 26 August 2022 22:56 (one year ago) link

I’m not a big Blondie fan, but I didn’t realize they were considered to be bad & hated (by folks in general).

Porcine-lina of the Pig Oceans (morrisp), Friday, 26 August 2022 23:50 (one year ago) link

they’re good. they have at least three amazing records

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 26 August 2022 23:56 (one year ago) link

there was a kind of avant disco blankness about them at the time that seemed very much like the future, I think that is a lot of the appeal

Dan S, Friday, 26 August 2022 23:57 (one year ago) link

not really a fan but “rapture” is amazing

brimstead, Saturday, 27 August 2022 00:02 (one year ago) link

I've never heard the first three albums and I don't care.

Ralf und Florian is essential, it's one of my favorite Kraftwerk albums.

The 25 Best Songs Ever Ranked In Order (Deflatormouse), Saturday, 27 August 2022 02:11 (one year ago) link

Then again my other favorite Kraftwerk albums are The Man Machine and Computer World, probably

I also love Ralf und Florian

broccoli rabe thomas (the table is the table), Saturday, 27 August 2022 02:17 (one year ago) link

Yeah my eternal top 3 are Computer World, Radioactivity, and Ralf un Florian. Side 2 of Ralf und Florian is one of the most blissed-out sides of vinyl in existence

J. Sam, Saturday, 27 August 2022 02:35 (one year ago) link

My potentially controversial Blondie opinion is that the first album may be more entertaining than Parallel Lines. My controversial Kraftwerk opinion is that side 2 of Trans-Europe Express gets pretty dull after a few minutes.

Halfway there but for you, Saturday, 27 August 2022 03:31 (one year ago) link

and your controversial Tonic opinion?

Evan, Saturday, 27 August 2022 03:41 (one year ago) link

My controversial opinion is that it is not possible to have a controversial ranking of Kraftwerk albums.

everything, Saturday, 27 August 2022 03:46 (one year ago) link

The first five Blondie albums are like ranking your children. You love them all individually and as a family. Maybe you have a favourite but that changes, and the eldest and the youngest have their issues.
