preposterous album title that fits right in with the last three preposterous albums titles

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 29 June 2022 11:44 (one year ago) link

i thought they'd teased that as a song title years ago but i checked and it might have been a working title for "bagsy not in net"?

weird that they're putting out a normal-sized album

ufo, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 12:44 (one year ago) link

I'd be disappointed if the album titles weren't ridiculous.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 June 2022 12:47 (one year ago) link

To my mind, one difference between Yorke (circa OK Computer) and Healy is that, while Yorke probably would have told people he was full of shit if asked, he always performed/performs the songs very seriously. Matt meanwhile has almost constructed a performative persona around being in on the joke, kind of “don’t believe anything you hear, and least of all this”. It really struck me when I saw a TV show performance of “The Sound” a few years back and Matt sang the song like he was doing a karaoke performance of someone else’s tune, which, conceptually he kind of was? And that is very present at the songwriting level - for example, I cannot think of a band or artist who has written more songs structured as conversations between unreliable narrators.

Considered objectively, this should perhaps make Matt less of a fraud than Thom (though the entire question of “is this fraudulent” is dumb and unhelpful in any event), but I think a lot of people hear Matt’s coded “I am full of shit” messaging and mistake it for something they have worked out for themselves, congratulating themselves for perceiving a kind of fakeness/shallowness to the pseudo-profundity as if that wasn’t precisely the vibe that Matt had been seeking to convey.

otm. I'd add: "ILMers hear the irony and distance, the 18-to-25 y/olds I know hear a shambolic goofball having fun."

being good at both of those does sum up healy's appeal

Faintly hoping that one of these songs is like 20 minutes long

J. Sam, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 18:06 (one year ago) link

i have no idea if 11 tracks w/ no experiments/filler (i say filler with love) would be a good thing or a bad thing.

i used to want that from them, but now i feel like 19 tracks w/ filler is part of the charm.

alpine static, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 18:28 (one year ago) link

yeah unlike everyone else on earth i was looking forward to a double album

just speculation but i hope j0rd is right about the neo-soul vibe he got from the sample

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 29 June 2022 18:33 (one year ago) link

i too have come to love the absurd length of their albums but they've always talked about how the first four albums are part of one "era" and i'm excited to see all the ways they might be moving in a new direction, concision included. the track titles seem to imply some greater degree of simplicity/straightforwardness which, along with the concise tracklist, could be part of what they mean by "pop" (a more digestible package, fewer experimental detours)

caulk the wagon and float it, Thursday, 30 June 2022 02:32 (one year ago) link

they've done the wild expansive 80-minute album twice now so i'm fine with them putting out something more focused as a change of pace

ufo, Thursday, 30 June 2022 06:50 (one year ago) link

the debut's songtitles were mostly one word and it was incredibly annoying

imago, Thursday, 30 June 2022 07:53 (one year ago) link

I also would like to see what they do with a tightly focused album, as much as I loved the last one

Vinnie, Thursday, 30 June 2022 10:20 (one year ago) link

what if half of those 11 tracks are long instrumental interludes

Murgatroid, Thursday, 30 June 2022 12:21 (one year ago) link

In a perhaps similar vein, I would be happy with this being their “focused” “pop” album if that means it is their Hats.

this would be a dream come true.

he's occasionally used hats as a reference point for wanting to make a more concise album someday

i like the song a lot but wow this is deeply perplexing choice for a lead single

Murgatroid, Thursday, 7 July 2022 17:06 (one year ago) link

it's so indie rock! they went to the pinegrove show

based on "give yourself a try" and "people" it seems like the first one from a new album is always a bit of a fake out now

J0rdan S., Thursday, 7 July 2022 17:08 (one year ago) link

perplexing not so much in aesthetic but this is clearly such an album track, at least those two you mentioned seemed like singles, y'know?

Murgatroid, Thursday, 7 July 2022 17:12 (one year ago) link

4:20 blaze it

funny you mention. it’s the fourth song on the album so it will prob function that way

J0rdan S., Thursday, 7 July 2022 17:39 (one year ago) link

i always thought "road kill" sounded like a pinegrove song with a beautiful softrock chorus

Heez, Thursday, 7 July 2022 17:40 (one year ago) link

listening to Matty on BBC and he said he didn't want it to be too flashy but still be a statement

success

Murgatroid, Thursday, 7 July 2022 17:43 (one year ago) link

oh lol Jack Antonoff is on the album

Murgatroid, Thursday, 7 July 2022 17:45 (one year ago) link

it’s gorgeous

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 7 July 2022 17:58 (one year ago) link

the strings are v Arthur Russell

Murgatroid, Thursday, 7 July 2022 18:05 (one year ago) link

i would not be mad if they made a sufjan stevens album lol

in places all over the world, real stuff be happening (voodoo chili), Thursday, 7 July 2022 18:06 (one year ago) link

the strings made me think of coldplay lol

It sounds a bit too much to bon iver, but I'll give it time

Nourry, Thursday, 7 July 2022 18:42 (one year ago) link

who is bon iver

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 7 July 2022 18:48 (one year ago) link

totally sounds Pinegrove-ish

alpine static, Thursday, 7 July 2022 18:50 (one year ago) link

michelle zauner sings back up on the chorus

J0rdan S., Thursday, 7 July 2022 19:19 (one year ago) link

antonoff only as good as the ppl he’s working with imo…. thankfully the 1975 are good

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 7 July 2022 20:24 (one year ago) link

what about Bleachers then

Murgatroid, Thursday, 7 July 2022 20:43 (one year ago) link

i understand the ease of the pinegrove comparison but to me it's still so clearly a 1975 plastic pop song despite the more "naturalistic" instrumentation. sudden trapdoors in the arrangement, that electronic kick running thru the stringy verse sections, weird found sound bits, processed saxophones. i don't think it's that weird of a choice for a first single, it's very catchy and likable!

caulk the wagon and float it, Thursday, 7 July 2022 20:44 (one year ago) link

made me think of When Saints Go Machine "Add Ends"

boxedjoy, Thursday, 7 July 2022 21:03 (one year ago) link

I like this.

True, but my first thought was of Lou Reed's "Street Hassle."

what about Bleachers then

― Murgatroid, Thursday, July 7, 2022 1:43 PM (twenty-four minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

i don’t understand the question. afaic when he’s working with himself he’s bad

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 7 July 2022 21:08 (one year ago) link

or not bad, rather, there’s just not enough going on in bleachers for it to be a compelling project. if you’re referring to the constant parade of guest vocalists, they’re guest vocalists

but antonoff’s work with crj and taylor swift is roundly excellent, especially with the latter

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 7 July 2022 21:10 (one year ago) link

love the sound (but not the limp falsetto chorus)
love the visuals, as i always do - who runs them for the 1975? matty? a team? they're like everything i wish arcade fire or radiohead could have more consistently invented.

sean gramophone, Thursday, 7 July 2022 21:18 (one year ago) link

lol brad, that wasn't a serious q, should have added a "lol" i guess

Murgatroid, Thursday, 7 July 2022 21:52 (one year ago) link

this is great, i like this much more than "give yourself a try" and "people"

very much reminds me of the last two bon iver albums but more grounded

all their creative from videos to album covers to stage design is done in house. they are true auteurs baby. pretty sure it's matty, george and jamie who manages them/runs dirty hit
