The prob for the mavs is that the other bad contracts they have on the books made it so Cuban can’t (won’t) spend more for a player that actually contributes. The brunson contract wouldn’t cripple them.

the hardaway jr contract is prob regrettable. i just think that when your entire team is shooters and rim runners/stretch bigs you should be able to find another guard who can score and play back up point for you for less than $29 million a year. dinwiddie went from shooting 37/31 on the wizards to 50/40 on the mavs. their system is very friendly to ball handlers. i think they do need to replace brunson because having two scoring guards to go w/ luka was a big thing in their post-deadline surge but even if it's not until the next deadline i think they'll be able to figure something out. i just find it hard to believe that we're gonna be sitting here this time next year like, well the mavs let jalen brunson walk and it all went to shit

also like, nobody thinks this is a good contract right? is anyone wishing their team was the ones getting the $30 million jalen brunson contract? i feel like teams more often screw up by saying "well we can't lose him for nothing!" (tim hardaway jr) than just letting the guy walk and figuring it out from there

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 29 June 2022 05:08 (one year ago) link

We already have the Dlo contract so I'm good

They have luka so they’ll be fine but what means do they have to get another ball handler?

It’s too much yah. I’m just skeptical they can figure it out from here

Spottie, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 06:35 (one year ago) link

dinwiddie will pick up some of the slack, it wouldn’t be a shock if he was in the top 5 of sixth man of the year voting. i think there will be guys floating around out there for them to look at. rubio, bledsoe, schroeder all come to mind. aaron holiday. none of those guys are as good as brunson or particularly exciting but how much of his production can you replace for a fraction of the salary? dinwiddie basically fell off the back of a truck for them and was really solid. the new front office has made two pretty shrewd trades already. ppl love to be in a constant state of panic about the mavs for whatever reason but the foundation of what they’re doing seems pretty solid to me

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 29 June 2022 07:03 (one year ago) link

dragic would be a decent pick up for them. not sure how reliable any of those guys would be in second round playoff games and beyond but not sure brunson was necessarily a major solution there either especially at close to $30 million. as far as the regular season goes i think they can patch it together. wood and hardaway jr will help juice the offense as well… maybe they give a little back on defense. imo they’ll be right in that 3/4/5/6 mix again and once the playoffs come luka will be putting them on his back. i don’t think their outlook has substantially changed. maybe i’m wrong

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 29 June 2022 07:17 (one year ago) link

dragic will probably play for the mavs (via slovenian tampering) but he is mega cooked.

brunsons abscence will be felt, hard to say exactly how much because his playoff success was quite matchup dependent, but i dont think you can replace his production by committee.

farewell luka garza ncaa player of the year

lag∞n, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 12:09 (one year ago) link

lmao i remember arguing w someone on twitter last year abt how luka garza shd not be a 1RP and he was like "but he was so good in college!!" i know the internet is full of armchair gm's (ie us) but there really is a gap in knowledge of hoops in the fan world

terence trent d'ilfer (m bison), Wednesday, 29 June 2022 13:49 (one year ago) link

he was good in college. at offense.

in places all over the world, real stuff be happening (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 29 June 2022 14:01 (one year ago) link

yes. the big homie was trying to compare him to jokic. i was like, sure if you take away jokic's passing, dribbling, shot creation, fluidity, ability to move their feet, and then make him one of the worst shot blockers of anyone over 6'8", theyre pretty similar

terence trent d'ilfer (m bison), Wednesday, 29 June 2022 14:09 (one year ago) link

lol yeah, he was a usage sink, no passing ability to speak of. and he was probably the worst defender in high-major ball

When I watched Garza play in the NCAA tourney and the announcers tried to inflate his reputation as a primo talent my reaction was what's so great about this 'big white stiff'.

I think this may be the case. Both repped by Klutch

Heez, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 21:48 (one year ago) link

i'm pretty sure the spurs were like "oh you wanna trade us two unprotected first and another first from one of the sorriest franchises in the NBA for a borderline all star PG who can't shoot? ok."

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 29 June 2022 22:01 (one year ago) link

i think this serves atlanta's short-term interest to be in the playoffs, i just dont know HOW much better this makes atl. mia, mil, bos, tor, phi all have an edge, bk still might fuck around and bring the team back. i had similar feelings about chicago's offseason last year.

terence trent d'ilfer (m bison), Wednesday, 29 June 2022 22:08 (one year ago) link

that is just a lot for murray. were they even bidding against anyone?

You’re such a hawk hater. In 25/27 the hawks will be a consistent top 4 seed. We’re looking at two picks that will be somewhere around 18-25. Plus the hawks are past that stage in the rebuild to give a shit about those picks

Heez, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 22:21 (one year ago) link

Y’all act like they’re giving up lottery picks

Heez, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 22:23 (one year ago) link

hawks could easily be in the lottery in 25/27, thats still a few years off

ciderpress, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 22:25 (one year ago) link

yeah nobody knows what anything in the nba looks like in 2027 cmon, fortunes rise fortunes fall

Clay, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 22:27 (one year ago) link

Ok huge mistake by the hawks. Very convincing guys

this is v optimistic given the presence of bos, mil, and the eternally competing miami heat, not to mention tor.

its a step forward to have another offensive initiator and an improved perimeter defender, but if theyve got capela/okongwu in the front court, their spacing has taken a hit.

terence trent d'ilfer (m bison), Wednesday, 29 June 2022 23:08 (one year ago) link

They had one of the best offenses in the league. This dramatically improves their defense and I’m having a hard time believing that subbing Huerter for Murray is gonna hurt hem offensively

Heez, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 23:12 (one year ago) link

Right now they have:

Trae
Murray
Bogdanovich
Collins
Okongwu
Capela
Hunter
Huerter
And a couple picks they’ve been developing. That’s a young team that will not get worse over the next 5 seasons

Heez, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 23:15 (one year ago) link

he's better than dlo, but not so much that it was worth trade 3 1RPs

terence trent d'ilfer (m bison), Wednesday, 29 June 2022 23:37 (one year ago) link

its a steep price def but hes good young versatile player, think i wouldve liked this move better from a contender trying to put themselves over the top than from a middle of the pack team like the hawks

lag∞n, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 23:53 (one year ago) link

i kind of am a hawks hater... but have i been wrong about them? that's a different question.

i think this trade is defensible from the hawks perspective insofar as murray is grossly underpaid for two years and if they can use collins and some other pieces on the team to reshape their roster they will almost certainly end up as a better team. my point was more that for the spurs getting two unprotected picks and a pick from the hornets kinda makes it a no brainer of a decision from their POV. the pelicans got unprotected picks from the lakers for anthony davis and have already gotten a top 10 pick out of it and may get another one in 2024 or 2025. you could've easily made the same argument of "well these picks will never be lottery picks, i mean the lakers have lebron and AD!" aside from the quality of the picks the hawks also handcuffing themselves from trading picks in any other deal so they better have nailed their valuation of murray and their feel for how he will play with trae

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 29 June 2022 23:57 (one year ago) link

protected picks are good for sure and the hawks are always one trae young injury from being deep in the lottery

lag∞n, Thursday, 30 June 2022 00:01 (one year ago) link

from the spurs pov not only do they get those picks but their own picks become more valuable by trading their best player lol

this trade reminds me a lot of the bulls making that vucevic deal, which was in effect three first round picks. it's a team in the 7/8/9 morass in the east trading their most valuable picks for the fringe all star off a bad team in order to vault into the 4/5/6 range of the east aka giving up a lot to get marginally better. murray is younger and probably better than vucevic but the effect feels the same to me. the bulls have already lost a top 10 pick in that deal which became franz wagner which is terrible for them and they don't have next year's pick either.
