fwiw some of them do look relatively nice, but they definitely look to me like "I take myself really seriously as a RUNNER" and not so much a fashion statement

feel like i've seen a lot of service industry people wearing them recently--they strike me as more of an all-day comfort shoe than something for runners

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 03:42 (one year ago) link

they're def marketed as shoes for runners

tons of nurses wear hokas, they're definitely thought of as a comfortable shoe for industry people on their feet. Hoka speedgoats are supposed to be good trail runners, but it's really about what your preference is in terms of needing a lot of support. I'm def leaning towards the barefoot/zero drop camp at this point.

Bongo Jongus, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 04:52 (one year ago) link

I have been radicalized into the barefoot camp

Bongo Jongus, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 04:53 (one year ago) link

Hokas are definitely (also) for running and have pretty vocal adherents. I don't wear them for running (knee problems), but I wear them to the gym. My wife is a serious runner and she tried them in the past and wasn't a fan, so different strokes.

Am I doomposting? I would say you’re not doomposting enough. (PBKR), Wednesday, 29 June 2022 11:18 (one year ago) link

not a serious runner but I do prefer less cushion/support generally in running or athletic shoes, just feels like my foot more naturally does what it's supposed to do that way

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Wednesday, 29 June 2022 12:59 (one year ago) link

hmm cross thread shoe action with the running thread at the moment! hokas are bad for your feet go minimal do foot and toe training for tendonitis.

I'm no expert but I know the Hokas feel better. Absolutely agree that foot/ankle exercises have made the biggest difference.

sorry, yeah, this is good - wouldn't pretend to give actual advice about tendonitis.

like i'm pretty sure that if you're running in cushy shoes with a higher heel than toe, it's easier to get away with heel striking which leads to plantar fascitis.

my tendonitis issue is located just above my inner ankle and as far as fixing it with different shoes goes i haven't really had any success yet.

xp I’ve got tendinitis (self diagnosed) in the same spot and I swear I got it the first time I went to LA and spent an extraordinary amount of time stop-and-go driving.

What sort of exercises do you do?

joygoat, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 19:36 (one year ago) link

As for shoe content I had never seen hokas before in the Midwest but every third person in Portland was wearing them a few weeks ago, never while running though.

joygoat, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 19:38 (one year ago) link

i looked at the hokas website and they all look extremely diabetescore (a term i think i first encountered on this thread?)

― joygoat, Wednesday, June 29, 2022 8:36 PM (one hour ago) bookmarkflaglink

i need to emphasize that what i'm trying is not pt-directed in any way or based on any scientific authority whatsoever, just on 'oh that looks interesting i'll give it a try' and so far my tendonitis is a little less acute but not better.

i did visit a podiatrist who specializes in running form a year ago about it. she gave me a weeks worth of steroids and told me to use my big toes to push forward and that was about it. my form got better, the tendonitis got less severe but still hangs around.

i suspect that it has something to do with how my right foot rolls out which seems connected to the alignment situation of my whole right leg.

i've been doing funny walks as seen here for general foot strength. i don't know how this will affect the tendonitis and i've only been doing it for two weeks but my feet feel stronger at least.

I sat next to a guy on a plane recently who seemed to be pretty high up at lululemon's new shoe brand. The material he was looking at on his laptop was pretty interesting in terms of how shoe brands position themselves (small brands like Hoka, On and Altra are growing quite rapidly with online advertising), and basically after 24 years old most of the market stops caring about fashion/style. I'm not in marketing and haven't really worked for a large company so it was also pretty funny to see how stupid marketing is overall, as there were a bunch of slides that were like "How does Supreme do it???? (We are not Supreme)" and it had pictures of the $500 Supreme terra cotta flower pots or whatever. Anyway, really just made me want to go barefoot and call it a day.

Bongo Jongus, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 21:06 (one year ago) link

the ig account i linked above has been very persuasive to me personally about minimalist vs maximalist footwear. but i also feel like the body just decays over time, especially tendons and joints and stuff, and there's nothing we can really do to prevent that so we might as well make ourselves as comfortable as possible.

and also i am now that guy who wears toe shoes to work. is that the kind of midlife crisis you want? if not, definitely disregard all of this lol.

Re: tendonitis, mine is on the outside, not inside, but initial PT exercises were exterior flexion with resistance bands and I assume you could to the same thing with interior flexion.

I wearing cheap flip flops or slides in the summer if not working or walking too far and Salomon trail runners or winter boots the rest of the year.

I am way late to this but I went years and years w/o sandals and I begrudgingly bought a pair of Tevas for a camping trip last year and I LOVE them, I got this goofy 90s colorway and I really love them a lot and even wear them to like run erradns and shit in

Good brand for swim trunks? I've had the same crappy pair from Target for like 5 years now and it's time to move on. I should note that I am not extremely slim, more in the dadbod category.

three weeks pass...

tlg i ordered a pair of rainbow flipflops to my parents' house and i am wearing them now and they're awesome. i love them. i walked about 10 miles on the south downs in sussex with them because i developed a blister from my boots lol. they are still in perfect shape.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 8 August 2022 19:46 (one year ago) link

one month passes...

Why are people wearing undershirts with polo shirts? I have not seen this until this year. Granted, I haven't been looking, but anyway it seems goofy to me.

To me, the tech-bro logo polo shirt is already casual. I don't like them mich but they are ubiquitous in brofessional spaces.

Dude. You are not "more dressed up" if we can see that you have a basic-ass Hanes t-shirt underneath it.

this used to be a thing with mormons ime, maybe you work with a bunch of mormons?

ꙮ (map), Friday, 7 October 2022 14:47 (one year ago) link

the visible undershirt was weird from the beginning, whats the meaning, i have taken off my tie, is it an implied tie

lag∞n, Friday, 7 October 2022 14:50 (one year ago) link

pretty weird! it doesn't make sense. the best i could come up with is it's some modesty pose. like polos are too revealing of the chest and must be supplemented with a white undercovering.

ꙮ (map), Friday, 7 October 2022 14:54 (one year ago) link

I guess you don’t have to wash your polo shirt as often?

Tracer Hand, Friday, 7 October 2022 14:54 (one year ago) link

but in that case a v-neck is going to be a better vibe

Tracer Hand, Friday, 7 October 2022 14:55 (one year ago) link

i’m speaking purely as a theoretical polo shirt wearer you understand

Tracer Hand, Friday, 7 October 2022 14:55 (one year ago) link

i know i have talked about this on here before but exposed undershirt is a scourge. i hate it.

call all destroyer, Friday, 7 October 2022 14:57 (one year ago) link

I think that's it, not sweating the polo to death. Is it a Southern thing? The two people that come to mind who I've seen doing it were from Georgia and Texas.

The self-titled drags (Eazy), Friday, 7 October 2022 14:57 (one year ago) link

Yeah this is why I don't do visible undershirts also. I don't want to see your underwear.

Dude, they sell v-necks, or you could just, I dunno, wear shirts normally?

Historically, underwear was to protect your nicer outer clothes so you didn't have to wash / dry clean / replace them as often. When cloth was expensive and laundry was time-consuming.

But if you're just going to put your stupid polo shirt into the washing machine anyway, just go ahead and wear it normally! Ditto your normal no-iron button-down dress shirt from Macy's or whatever. It isn't made of cloth-of-gold. Just wear it, wash it, wear it, wash it.

the floor is guava (Ye Mad Puffin), Friday, 7 October 2022 14:58 (one year ago) link

How about flannel shirts?

The self-titled drags (Eazy), Friday, 7 October 2022 15:00 (one year ago) link

that makes sense, the sweat and not washing the shirt as much. still feel like there's some covering-up frisson going on but that's because i'm gaaaaay. i love polos, polos 4 life imo.

xxp maybe some people don't want them to fade as fast.

How about flannel shirts?

― The self-titled drags (Eazy), Friday, October 7, 2022 11:00 AM (forty-three seconds ago) bookmarkflaglink

imo its ok with a flannel, more of a rolled out of bed look, maybe its just a normal tshirt too, and then there are the open flannel wearers, like a shirt jacket except its just a shirt

lag∞n, Friday, 7 October 2022 15:04 (one year ago) link

Re: flannel shirts or shackets, the central question is: are you going to re-wear this shirt without washing it?

I seriously doubt these gentlemen are wearing two shirts, going home and only washing one. I just can't imagine that they carefully hang up their outer tech-bro-logo-polo and only wash the undershirt.

No. Pretty sure they throw everything in the laundry.
They're not working in the rice fields or living in squalid Victorian hovels. Also it's October. They go from a climate-controlled apartment and walk twelve feet to a climate-controlled car and work for eight hours in a climate-controlled office.

Just don't get it.

the floor is guava (Ye Mad Puffin), Friday, 7 October 2022 15:12 (one year ago) link

clothes are not exclusively about ones laundry practices, nor are they exclusively worn in offices

lag∞n, Friday, 7 October 2022 15:15 (one year ago) link

jeez ymp you’ve got me feeling like silas marner over here for not throwing every item of counting into a scalding hot wash the second it leaves my body

Tracer Hand, Friday, 7 October 2022 16:03 (one year ago) link

how about a white button-up with two buttons unbuttoned and a hot pink v-neck underneath

Tracer Hand, Friday, 7 October 2022 16:04 (one year ago) link

lime green tank top with a surfing graphic

lag∞n, Friday, 7 October 2022 16:06 (one year ago) link

washing most clothes after a single wearing is deranged

for the undershirt q: I don't get it with polos, agreed there, same with like plain white or blue dress shirts, but we're not talking about any visible t-shirt underneath a long-sleeved shirt with buttons, right? I do that all the time for reasons including warmth and chest hair I don't need people to contemplate. Also some shirt material is more abrasive/less pleasant than a t-shirt.
