good question - other buildings nearby are higher and would be better locations for aerials

StanM, Saturday, 25 June 2022 17:36 (one year ago) link

construction is going on in the bottom panel of the second window though, maybe these locations are linked

what a peculiar (tower/gate/?) in the bottom right corner

StanM, Thursday, 30 June 2022 06:18 (one year ago) link

is that a bridge? looks like there's water just next to it

koogs, Thursday, 30 June 2022 06:24 (one year ago) link

That tower has a South or SE Asian vibe to me.

nickn, Thursday, 30 June 2022 06:45 (one year ago) link

looks like cyrillic(??) script on the biggest building front center

the cat needs to start paying for its own cbd (map), Thursday, 30 June 2022 12:52 (one year ago) link

lots of medium size blocky apartment buildings makes me think eastern europe

ciderpress, Thursday, 30 June 2022 13:17 (one year ago) link

how many km across does that lake/river look?

ciderpress, Thursday, 30 June 2022 14:11 (one year ago) link

not having any luck with eastern europe cities on a wide river or lake, where else looks like that?

ciderpress, Thursday, 30 June 2022 14:34 (one year ago) link

New Rochelle???

I_Got_Loaded, Thursday, 30 June 2022 14:39 (one year ago) link

oh lol so it is

ciderpress, Thursday, 30 June 2022 14:49 (one year ago) link

new york is basically eastern europe, in my defense

ciderpress, Thursday, 30 June 2022 14:50 (one year ago) link

There's very clearly a city of some size in the distance— those aren't mountains.

broccoli rabe thomas (the table is the table), Thursday, 30 June 2022 15:29 (one year ago) link

what the...? wow

StanM, Thursday, 30 June 2022 17:24 (one year ago) link

yeah i completely missed the horizon line having city buildings in the 2nd photo

ciderpress, Thursday, 30 June 2022 17:30 (one year ago) link

ok, the difference between high and low tides there is only 8 ft (2,4 m), not much needed re: dams/dykes etc

StanM, Thursday, 30 June 2022 17:31 (one year ago) link

all of my assumptions were wrong based on that alone - I r dum.

StanM, Thursday, 30 June 2022 17:42 (one year ago) link

New Rochelle it is, interesting what people do and don't notice in a view!

Christmas in Davenport (cherry blossom), Friday, 1 July 2022 16:21 (one year ago) link

if that isn't Africa I'm eating my hat (and I don't even have one)

StanM, Friday, 1 July 2022 17:05 (one year ago) link

I wouldn't rule out the Caribbean but (sub-Saharan?) Africa seems like a good place to start

rob, Friday, 1 July 2022 17:07 (one year ago) link

Could even be Guyana.

nickn, Friday, 1 July 2022 18:05 (one year ago) link

I'm gonna have to buy a hat, aren't I

StanM, Friday, 1 July 2022 18:14 (one year ago) link

I consider Guyana to be part of the Caribbean but yeah it needn't be an island

That said, I have no idea where to start with this...Kenya? Mauritius?

rob, Friday, 1 July 2022 18:18 (one year ago) link

I see where you're going with some of those, but for now at least I'm sticking with East-Central Africa (though not with much conviction)

Christmas in Davenport (cherry blossom), Friday, 1 July 2022 18:19 (one year ago) link

I'm pretty confident it's Africa though - look at this in South Africa (it's not the location of the pic but)

StanM, Friday, 1 July 2022 18:21 (one year ago) link

xp
yeah Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Tanzania, all seem possible to me too. I briefly looked at Madagascar for a minute

rob, Friday, 1 July 2022 18:22 (one year ago) link

Kampala does not look un-promising

rob, Friday, 1 July 2022 18:27 (one year ago) link

Mbabane, Eswatini? buildings and terrain look very similar but i have no real landmarks to confirm with

ciderpress, Saturday, 2 July 2022 01:42 (one year ago) link

Kampala was making a compelling case, but that type of gate doesn't seem to exist there.

Christmas in Davenport (cherry blossom), Monday, 4 July 2022 00:12 (one year ago) link

let me know if you want another photo.

broccoli rabe thomas (the table is the table), Monday, 4 July 2022 15:11 (one year ago) link

I would say yes to that personally

big movers, hot steppers + long shaker intros (breastcrawl), Monday, 4 July 2022 17:24 (one year ago) link

I wouldn't say no either - we're not *really* getting anywhere right now imho

StanM, Tuesday, 5 July 2022 12:42 (one year ago) link

oooooh

StanM, Tuesday, 5 July 2022 15:23 (one year ago) link

so cars drive on the left

StanM, Tuesday, 5 July 2022 15:24 (one year ago) link

(helpful link : https://www.worldstandards.eu/cars/list-of-left-driving-countries/ )

StanM, Tuesday, 5 July 2022 15:24 (one year ago) link

that means all of S and SE Africa is still in play

big movers, hot steppers + long shaker intros (breastcrawl), Tuesday, 5 July 2022 16:00 (one year ago) link

except for Madagascar

big movers, hot steppers + long shaker intros (breastcrawl), Tuesday, 5 July 2022 16:01 (one year ago) link

Guyana (and Suriname!) also still in there

big movers, hot steppers + long shaker intros (breastcrawl), Tuesday, 5 July 2022 16:02 (one year ago) link

if these are google streetview photos (the first one has the watermark) then that further limits the countries in play, theres only a few african countries with coverage

ciderpress, Tuesday, 5 July 2022 16:34 (one year ago) link

i do still suspect it's in eastern south africa or one of the kingdoms, there's a lot of places in that region that look like that

ciderpress, Tuesday, 5 July 2022 16:39 (one year ago) link

I'm still liking Kampala for this, but I don't know. That little hill keeps cropping up, but the similar one in Kampala is sort of taller

I did find a house with that gate

Presuming second view is also a street view, its not often they're done at dusk

Christmas in Davenport (cherry blossom), Tuesday, 5 July 2022 17:20 (one year ago) link

The road divider things are super distinctive!

Christmas in Davenport (cherry blossom), Tuesday, 5 July 2022 17:22 (one year ago) link

My first thought was Ethiopia (although I had no idea where) which logically leads me to Kenya next - through driving on the left.

Road markings v similar to Britain too so I want to say Commonwealth.

found the weird railings I think

Christmas in Davenport (cherry blossom), Tuesday, 5 July 2022 19:23 (one year ago) link

got it!
