ahahaha i have my doubts about sharpe though, but mostly because i have no idea how to project him based on his limited run.

if he's as dynamic an athlete and scorer as people say he is then i think it was prob a no brainer pick for them

Outlook: This latest viewing was a reminder of just how physically talented and skilled Sharpe truly is, and there's a real argument to be made that he's the best perimeter prospect in this 2022 class, should he opt to enter and stay in the draft. Depending on what you think of prospects like Jabari Smith, Chet Holmgren, Paolo Banchero and Jaden Ivey, you could make a case that he has as much long-term upside as anyone, especially with NBA teams clamoring for perimeter players who can create offense for themselves and others at all 3 levels. While I mentioned players like Anthony Edwards and Jalen Green in our Sharpe deep dive, Paul George is a name that came to mind when watching Sharpe practice. While George is clearly much taller (6-9 to Sharpe's 6-6) and more wing than guard, Sharpe is that smooth and skilled of a scorer with the potential to develop into a reliable playmaker and defender like George has. They also have a similar on-court demeanor. With all that in mind, Sharpe is truly one of the most fascinating prospects in this draft because of his immense talent yet the act that we've never truly seen him in a competitive setting with several do-or-die possessions. Even so, I wouldn't be surprised to see Sharpe ultimately go in the top-5 of the 2022 NBA draft should he opt to stay in as it'll be incredibly difficult for teams who have seen him in person to pass on his combination of physical tools and talent on the perimeter. -- Mike Schmitz

I'm just saying that 'amazing vertical leaping ability' is a pretty marginal NBA skill. Same thing for 'off the charts athleticism', which all the articles also say about Sharpe. Basically, the people writing these articles don't know what else to say because what else can you say about a guy who's played so little?

well, i don't think is true. most NBA players are obv exceptional athletes, but if you're "off the charts" even by those standards that still matters. ja morant, anthony edwards, early westbrook, early lebron are all guys that come to mind as unusually athletic players whose athleticism matters (or mattered) greatly in terms of being great basketball players. of course you need a certain level of skill and effort and all that but if you can jump higher than all of your opponents that gives you a huge advantage in basketball

yeah, thats p key. if they're teachable, they can do things that other players cant.

im not surprised he fell that low and i guess if you plan on moving heurter, itd be helpful to have a guy who can shoot, but i think thats all griffin can do. his defense wasnt just shaky, it was awful. he'll be a bench shooter if he cant fully rehab from all the injuries he's had.

the guy who fell that i cant believe is ej liddell, he was projected in the 20s, maybe even teens, but went 41 to new orleans. undersized PF, but a good weak-side defender and had developed outside range. got some millsap to his game.

yeah re shaedon sharpe he was the #1 prospect for next years draft before he reclassified, seems like a pretty good risk at 7 to me

indiana should have gone after him, they need someone with upside

as someone who doesn't follow this closely at all, are nba cap/draft pick/contract shenanigans the most complicated in sports?

it's crazy to me how everyone is always dealing six future draft picks, half of them protected, in a three-team trade, so they can buy out the actual player they receive

also that despite all this the lakers are still stuck with russ

I don't disagree. The most heartening thing I've read about Sharpe so far is that Dame watched all the guys who worked out for the Blazers and he was enthused about picking him. I presume the private work-out and personal interviews for the team contained a lot more info about him, his abilities and his mindset than anyone in the media has access to. All the media types can analyze is what's out in public.

the nfl has some weird stuff with all of the contract restructuring you can do to move money around, but the nba is probably still much more complex than that.

always assumed it's a little more loosey goosey in the other leagues bc the rosters are so much larger so there needs to be wiggle room for the 40 guys on the team nobody knows about

nba is definitely overly complex with the roster rules, a bunch of it is old rules that had a purpose at one point but might no longer that have ossified and accumulated

baseball draft is way more of a crapshoot than nba anyway 1st round picks wouldnt be worth as much there

i don't think the NBA is any more or less complex than other leagues when it comes to roster rules -- the rules about service time and minor league options and trigger deadlines in MLB are far more complex than the two way system in the NBA -- but putting protections on picks is unique to the NBA. part of that is because the other sports don't have lotteries so you're dealing w/ an extra level of uncertainty w/ future NBA picks, but i think it also is done to purposefully facilitate transactions which is overall a net positive for the league even if it becomes overly complex a lot of the time. in baseball you have prospects driving most transactions but the NBA doesn't have that element, instead picks are the currency and allowing teams to protect picks obviously makes them feel more comfortable about trading (and also receiving) picks

the crazy thing about the NBA to me is that teams are seemingly allowed -- if they can -- to invent new ways to structure contracts and protect picks... like the rules are not already set out. it's kind of a wild west where if you and the other team agree on a way to protect the pick then the league will agree to it. thinking of i.e. daryl morey inventing the reverse protection in trading kyle lowry to the raptors. also daryl inventing the poison pill w/ the jeremy lin offer sheet

NHL does have a lottery and picks can be traded, but the market isn't as hectic as the NBA. clearly it needs a daryl morey

(when its cap first came in there was a spate of like 12-year hugely front-loaded contracts -- because the cap hit was salary average per year -- but the league soon closed that loophole)
