embarrassed to say it but imo Birkenstocks are a solid choice. The Ramses (thong/toe-post) for me.

I wear mostly sandals 3 seasons out of the year, I've had A LOT of them and might actually be the ilxor best qualified to answer a question for once.

The best made pair of sandals I've ever had, and also the most comfortable by far, were Keen Rialto II's. They are not everyone's idea of stylish, admittedly, and on the expensive side. But they are certainly long lasting and even machine washable, which is a huge plus. I currently have a pair of their Newports in rotation, and they're also excellent- just slightly less cushy.

You'll want to size down. I normally wear a 10.5 or 11 and their 10 fits me perfectly.

I would def steer clear of any kind of leather sandals if you'll be wearing them to the beach.

If you live in the uk you’re never going to wear them again tbh so I would get the plastic Arizona Birkenstocks.

I wear the plainest Tevas I can find, roughly https://www.teva-eu.com/en/gb/mens-original-universal-retro-sport-sandal/1004006.html

xp yeah, idg why durability is a criteria honestly. any pair of sandals will last a few years if you almost never wear em.

Tevas are perfect for the beach and fine for a stroll around the block but they suck for walking long distances in ime.

would you forget i said that, actually? b/c I've had a couple of pairs that fell apart after wearing them once.

I just bought some upgraded Teva "hiking sandal" thingies. I previously had Teva hurricanes and they lasted me a long time including walking a lot in them and getting them wet a lot. The plain Tevas are definitely the best looking imo though. The hiking ones have an extra strap and it kind of makes them look less, uh, elegant.

Generally speaking I think Tevas are a great great product and insanely well made for the money. Even the simple ones are super comfortable and easy to walk in.

eh, we're talking to a resident of the uk who needs something to wear in portugal for a week, not a huge american dweeb who carries a 128oz bottle of water with them and wears shorts 9 months of the year.

guilty but i must point out that huge american dweebs who carry 128 oz water bottles and wear shorts all tje time are basically the same as tourists of whatever nationality.

Look, for that one week he is gonna be a huge American dweeb.

love tevas

flopson, Sunday, 26 June 2022 05:56 (one year ago) link

plain tevas are stylish and I stand by it. Every upgrade they make to make them more functional tends to reduce their style factor somewhat. But even the plain ones I think are pretty good for walking if you're young and in decent shape. I had a $30 pair of tevas that I walked all over the place in for years when I was younger.

i have a pair of tevas i bought about five years ago. they were a collaboration with a somewhat progressive japanese casual brand and pretty fashion forward at the time. now they are part of the teva women’s mainline, albeit without the dual branding

https://www.endclothing.com/se/teva-x-beauty-youth-hurricane-xlt-sandal-1013795-tan.html

i’ve never worn them. as a san diegan i wear flip flops (rainbow sandal brand, leather w double sole) at some point in the day probably 270 days a year. if i need something more structured i generally reach for my birkenstocks (kyoto or zurich) before these.

i think you need really cool socks to make these works. i’ve never owned cool socks.

i too am a flipflop user theyre not really good for serious motoring tho i just wear shoes then

i was thinking about customizing a pair of these since the leather sandals tend to get destroyed quick by salt water. i like how they look w/ a white base and dark green straps (sort of stan smith vibe) but still trying to come up w a blue/gold strap on white base combo as an expression of golden bears / tritons school spirit

lag∞n, Tuesday, 28 June 2022 22:53 (one year ago) link

“ho me chillos, how bout a spot of ultraviolence after we get sushi and not pay”

sadly at 45 vans are no longer orthopedically feasible. i actually do see ppl in their 60s and up wearing them all the time but they’re usually sitting down or not moving a whole lot

I have been having tendonitis in my left ankle/foot for almost at least 9 mos now. Doctor prescribed me Hoka's, which are these supercushiony running shoes. They are so thick I refer to them as my orthotic shoes (I am almost 50).

Am I doomposting? I would say you’re not doomposting enough. (PBKR), Tuesday, 28 June 2022 23:13 (one year ago) link

hmm cross thread shoe action with the running thread at the moment! hokas are bad for your feet go minimal do foot and toe training for tendonitis.

Look, if you're gonna wear Tevas you gotta get the most ridiculous lizard print ones or ikat so you can look like a summer camp counsellor ca. 1994. Forget about trying to make them look stylish.

I wear them all the time myself but they are very rough on my ankles if i walk in them for miles. I don't know how anyone goes hiking in those things.

Usually I'll grab a gently used pair off ebay for $15-20 (because that's what I think they're worth) and give em a good scrub.

Yes they're long lasting. I had one pair that I wore for years until they got washed away by the incoming tide while i was swimming and I had to go home barefoot.

They're so perfect for beach-going in fact that i found another pair straight away despite owning several other sandals.

I've only had one pair of vans, slip ons which i wore sockless (I hate socks) and they are cool looking but super uncomfortable and cause blisters even when thoroughly broken in (i mean to the point of falling apart which didn't even take that long). Honestly they are so overpriced, they are the biggest racket going other than, like, vinyl reissues. What sorcery is this that they have people lining up to buy these crappy shoes that hurt to wear and fall apart in a matter of months?

flip flops suck and i hate em

pool sliders too

Funny, just a couple days ago my wife made reference to "you know those chunky sneakers that are really hip now, Hokas" and I was like "What? You mean those dorky running shoes that I get ads for on instagram? I thought those were like the new Brooks"

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Wednesday, 29 June 2022 03:09 (one year ago) link

fwiw some of them do look relatively nice, but they definitely look to me like "I take myself really seriously as a RUNNER" and not so much a fashion statement

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Wednesday, 29 June 2022 03:12 (one year ago) link

feel like i've seen a lot of service industry people wearing them recently--they strike me as more of an all-day comfort shoe than something for runners

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 03:42 (one year ago) link

they're def marketed as shoes for runners
https://www.hoka.com/en/us/

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Wednesday, 29 June 2022 04:00 (one year ago) link

tons of nurses wear hokas, they're definitely thought of as a comfortable shoe for industry people on their feet. Hoka speedgoats are supposed to be good trail runners, but it's really about what your preference is in terms of needing a lot of support. I'm def leaning towards the barefoot/zero drop camp at this point.

Bongo Jongus, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 04:52 (one year ago) link

I have been radicalized into the barefoot camp

Bongo Jongus, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 04:53 (one year ago) link

Hokas are definitely (also) for running and have pretty vocal adherents. I don't wear them for running (knee problems), but I wear them to the gym. My wife is a serious runner and she tried them in the past and wasn't a fan, so different strokes.

not a serious runner but I do prefer less cushion/support generally in running or athletic shoes, just feels like my foot more naturally does what it's supposed to do that way

sorry, yeah, this is good - wouldn't pretend to give actual advice about tendonitis.

the cat needs to start paying for its own cbd (map), Wednesday, 29 June 2022 15:29 (one year ago) link

like i'm pretty sure that if you're running in cushy shoes with a higher heel than toe, it's easier to get away with heel striking which leads to plantar fascitis.

my tendonitis issue is located just above my inner ankle and as far as fixing it with different shoes goes i haven't really had any success yet.

xp I’ve got tendinitis (self diagnosed) in the same spot and I swear I got it the first time I went to LA and spent an extraordinary amount of time stop-and-go driving.

What sort of exercises do you do?

joygoat, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 19:36 (one year ago) link

As for shoe content I had never seen hokas before in the Midwest but every third person in Portland was wearing them a few weeks ago, never while running though.

joygoat, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 19:38 (one year ago) link

i looked at the hokas website and they all look extremely diabetescore (a term i think i first encountered on this thread?)

i need to emphasize that what i'm trying is not pt-directed in any way or based on any scientific authority whatsoever, just on 'oh that looks interesting i'll give it a try' and so far my tendonitis is a little less acute but not better.

i did visit a podiatrist who specializes in running form a year ago about it. she gave me a weeks worth of steroids and told me to use my big toes to push forward and that was about it. my form got better, the tendonitis got less severe but still hangs around.

i suspect that it has something to do with how my right foot rolls out which seems connected to the alignment situation of my whole right leg.

i've been doing funny walks as seen here for general foot strength. i don't know how this will affect the tendonitis and i've only been doing it for two weeks but my feet feel stronger at least.
