Look north presenter Harry Gration

"He had a real connection with the public who saw him as one of their own."

I don't think so!

God bless Harry Gration and god rest his soul. Supported the miners and a good man to the core. RIP.

Sad news. Vicar to Dad's Army Frank Williams sadly passed away last night aged 90. He was also the Bishop in four series of You Rang, M'Lord? among many many acting credits. Frank will be greatly missed by his admirers around the world. RIP 1932 - 2022. pic.twitter.com/fnujJRGEpU

Is that only Ian Lavender left from Dad’s Army?

Dan Worsley, Sunday, 26 June 2022 18:39 (one year ago) link

He was also the Bishop in four series of You Rang, M'Lord?

If that isn't a Bosom Manor spinoff then what is the point.

Poet and artist Kenward Elmslie

Sad to hear the news that the poet and performer Kenward Elmslie (1929-2022), a key figure in the New York School of poets, has passed away. Here he is in a portrait by Alex Katz (1978) and with Joe Brainard and Anne Waldman (1969). pic.twitter.com/98qahQQKuW

Okay, I've barely heard of TechnoBlade before today, but this video from his dad is pretty heart-wrenching:

Two great performances that maximize the impact of their screen time.

My kids were upset about Technoblade (lots of conversations about cancer & death from the 7-year-old) and after watching that video yeah I am a bit too.

Sudden Birdnet Thus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 1 July 2022 21:26 (one year ago) link

xpost Looked at his filmography - He was in a whole bunch of stuff, including several noir films back in the 50's

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 1 July 2022 21:27 (one year ago) link

Ralph Sonny Barger once offered his Angels to US Gov for service as "Gorillas" in Vietnam.Think he wrote directly to LBJ.
At the drive-in, I saw a what-if movie, where bikers did plunge into the jungle---and became involved with the residents of a village they were trying to protect---still the only movie I've seen in which Vietnamese were presented as actual people--very rare to see civilians at all.

Nam Angels? It's the first thing I thought of.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Friday, 1 July 2022 21:57 (one year ago) link

Yeah, The Losers was sometimes billed as Nam Angels, and I think the latter title was also used for a later movie.

dow, Friday, 1 July 2022 22:00 (one year ago) link

I was thinking about the later movie, but I think I was mixing them up in my head.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Friday, 1 July 2022 22:16 (one year ago) link

It was no Doberman Gang.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 1 July 2022 22:16 (one year ago) link

Apparently it was re-titled Nam's Angels when release on video

Per wikipedia, it was actually shot in the Philippines using sets and crew from Too Late the Hero... at a time when 95% of biker movies were shot within 45 minutes of los angeles

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 1 July 2022 22:27 (one year ago) link

xpost don't remember anything about it except what I said, but Vietnamese as people, living their civilian lives as best they could, that was and is a hell of a thing (they were pretty Other in Apocalypse Now, though that may have been a projection of/to reinforce Kurtz's freaked-out POV)(still)

Best in the game, working well into his 90s. His Hamlet with Adrian Lester was astonishing.

His Marat/Sade movie was too visceral for me to say whether I enjoyed it, exactly, but his King Lear was very good, whatever Pauline Kael had to say about it.
