You usually get a bit of a "vibe" off the work after a while (is it spooky? Stuffy? Romantic?) but it took me ages to get anything off this one - took me guessing until I'd revealed "I beheld his black eyes" and then I had it straight away.

I definitely play pretty differently to other people but I confess I did get a great satisfaction out of getting Crime and Punishment in only two guesses.

emil.y, Wednesday, 15 June 2022 15:32 (one year ago) link

updates at https://acdean.github.io/bookish/index.html - be sure to hit ctrl-f5 because its a bit stubborn about using the old version otherwise.

no visual changes (oh, i really need to add a version number) but better behaviour of the guess list - click on a previous guess to re-highlight that word. re-entering a word does the same. redactle has this nailed, i am slowly getting there.

20220616 - after nearly 300 guesses I don't know what the hell this is but I like it. (Hope I haven't read it before and forgotten!)

dear confusion the catastrophe waitress (ledge), Thursday, 16 June 2022 11:26 (one year ago) link

> I don't know what the hell this is but I like it

i predict: you will regret saying this

koogs, Thursday, 16 June 2022 12:35 (one year ago) link

Just gonna hide my entire response.

fucking lol! I also thought "I don't know what it is but I like it", because it seemed particularly dark and dystopian, and I enjoy dark and dystopian. But then my eyebrow started to raise when I was uncovering that the Bad Big Brother element seemed to be communal life, and I wondered if it was some old right-wingy perspective... took me a long time to work out that it was VERY much a right-wing perspective, and oh the shame of being intrigued by it. The shame, the shame.

emil.y, Thursday, 16 June 2022 13:28 (one year ago) link

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

I had a feeling that since it was so distinct but ringing no bells that it might be bad. But not so bad. So bad and wrong.

Oh well at least it wasn't mein kampf.

dear confusion the catastrophe waitress (ledge), Thursday, 16 June 2022 14:07 (one year ago) link

particularly hard because non-english name - ??? ???? - looks like it should be easy to guess but...

i think mein kampf is also in the list

koogs, Thursday, 16 June 2022 14:22 (one year ago) link

Didn't get todays, I haven't read it in 30+ years; title/author formatting threw me, I thought the title was the author and the subtitle/author the title.

dear confusion the catastrophe waitress (ledge), Friday, 17 June 2022 11:03 (one year ago) link

i did toy with making the (little known) subtitle part of the title, so you had to guess it, but am kinda pleased it threw people off anyway (sorry)

i went to test tomorrow's and found i couldn't remember it and got about 200 words in before i did remember. wouldn't've got it otherwise tbh.

koogs, Friday, 17 June 2022 12:28 (one year ago) link

(fwiw i always put a br between (title (and subtitle) and author) and (the rest of the text). but not always between book/volume/part/chapter+their names and the next thing)

<h1>title
(<h2>subtitle)
<h2>author
<br/>
<h2>part x
<h2>whatever
<p>it was the best of times, it was the blurst of times...

koogs, Friday, 17 June 2022 13:58 (one year ago) link

I don't mind really, it's more fun trying to guess without using title/author - I might start not looking at them at all at the beginning.

dear confusion the catastrophe waitress (ledge), Friday, 17 June 2022 14:04 (one year ago) link

have up after 200 today, worried that there was a bug. turns out i just can't remember famous book titles i spent 10 minutes editing about a week ago.

koogs, Sunday, 19 June 2022 11:13 (one year ago) link

That took me far longer than a book I know and like should have done!

emil.y, Sunday, 19 June 2022 13:10 (one year ago) link

such me as difficult because the title was a name - you weren't going to chance upon it whilst entering English words

koogs, Sunday, 19 June 2022 18:04 (one year ago) link

struck me as...

koogs, Sunday, 19 June 2022 18:04 (one year ago) link

I went for 250 guesses without looking at the author or title. Too hard. I guessed don at 296 but got no hits - maybe there was a space at the end, do you trim the input? it worked 30 guesses later, after I tried la and then mancha.

dear confusion the catastrophe waitress (ledge), Sunday, 19 June 2022 18:27 (one year ago) link

> maybe there was a space at the end

yeah, don't do that!

(fixed. now restricts input to a-z 0-9 and apostrophe)

also fixed something i noticed yesterday - it should scroll to the word in the guess list if you've entered it before

koogs, Sunday, 19 June 2022 20:14 (one year ago) link

today's obviously by some kook, got it from the title in 68 (I never studied him in philosophy, didn't even recognise the title as one of his)

dear confusion the catastrophe waitress (ledge), Monday, 20 June 2022 08:53 (one year ago) link

today's in 287 without ref to title or author, man riding in carriage to strange place with someone warning him of untoward happenings 'to-night'. could've been a bit quicker, i find it usually takes at least 100 boilerplate words before i can start narrowing it down though.

dear confusion the catastrophe waitress (ledge), Tuesday, 21 June 2022 14:44 (one year ago) link

i know the phrase Beyond Good And Evil from the Pop Group song more than the book.

Something up today, page won’t load correctly.

Dan Worsley, Saturday, 2 July 2022 07:46 (one year ago) link

looks like i only applied the 'add " to end of line' editor macro to the bottom of the file and didn't test it.

i think 0630 was also broken but i fixed it about 7:30. i have game files til the 6th, about 50 more that need uploading. and obviously i need to test them better than i have been (or at all)

koogs, Saturday, 2 July 2022 11:47 (one year ago) link

i think the big plan for this is to do 366 files and drop the year from the filenames so it's playable on a year long loop (with the last month or so playable at any time via the 'previous' list (and more if you hack the url), does that seem reasonable?). are there 366 famous books? 8)

(i can actually do new books by ripping the first chapters from amazon kindle previews, but that's often hard work. or i can use things that i own)

koogs, Saturday, 2 July 2022 11:55 (one year ago) link

(renaming done. that's introduced a bug where it'll break on the 1st january because it'll think the date has gone backwards but i have 6 months to fix that. the check is only there to stop people playing future games)

koogs, Saturday, 2 July 2022 12:17 (one year ago) link

New books - or canonical non public domain ones anyway - would be fun but might make it harder.

dear confusion the catastrophe waitress (ledge), Saturday, 2 July 2022 12:23 (one year ago) link

ProjGut is hardcoded at the moment, but i guess that wouldn't be too hard to change.

book suggestions welcome, but i think i'll keep it ProjGut until i run out. i envisage legal problems copying huge swathes of non-PD books.

koogs, Saturday, 2 July 2022 12:36 (one year ago) link

added games up to the end of the month, roughly, and checked them all

koogs, Saturday, 2 July 2022 13:23 (one year ago) link

a bug with today's, I've guessed the title (with a little help for the fourth word) but it hasn't given me the win.

dear confusion the catastrophe waitress (ledge), Thursday, 7 July 2022 13:25 (one year ago) link

disappointed I didn't get yesterday's.

dear confusion the catastrophe waitress (ledge), Thursday, 7 July 2022 13:30 (one year ago) link

Same bug for me. Got it quickly, too (a great book, if that isn't too much of a hint), so it was extra disappointing not to have the win display.

emil.y, Thursday, 7 July 2022 13:30 (one year ago) link

um, thanks. yes, problem.

it's an odd one, it's included the ',' in with the word so your guess has to include the comma. and yet it still reveals the word without the comma. title parsing is obviously doing something different.

it'll have to wait until this evening now because i don't think it'll be a quick fix.

yesterday's was on tv whilst i was doing the initial list or i might not've included it for obscureness reasons.

btw, what font are you seeing for the main text? i get sans serif on the laptop (firefox), serif on the macbook (firefox, chrome)

koogs, Thursday, 7 July 2022 14:35 (one year ago) link

serif on desktop (osx chrome), sans on phone (android chrome).

dear confusion the catastrophe waitress (ledge), Thursday, 7 July 2022 14:39 (one year ago) link

you wanna take out those quote marks round 'sans-serif'.

dear confusion the catastrophe waitress (ledge), Thursday, 7 July 2022 14:41 (one year ago) link

var tbits = t[1].split(/ /);

there's your comma problem...

koogs, Thursday, 7 July 2022 14:49 (one year ago) link

done and done. thanks ledge.

(um does \W+ match digits? do i have any digits in titles?)

koogs, Thursday, 7 July 2022 17:07 (one year ago) link

oh, that's broken apostrophes in titles 8(

koogs, Thursday, 7 July 2022 17:11 (one year ago) link

fixed

koogs, Thursday, 7 July 2022 17:23 (one year ago) link

it's redacting the 6 characters of   rather than printing a space. 8(

koogs, Friday, 8 July 2022 09:10 (one year ago) link

(that space there is an nbsp )

koogs, Friday, 8 July 2022 09:11 (one year ago) link

(font is better btw thanks)

koogs, Friday, 8 July 2022 09:15 (one year ago) link

Got today's on the strength of one of my usual starting words (after the 60-100 fillers): house. Not from the title which I try to avoid, but the ahem tell-tale capitalisation in the first para.

dear confusion the catastrophe waitress (ledge), Friday, 8 July 2022 10:14 (one year ago) link

what can i do to hide the title? i guess it'd have to start hidden. i could put it as the actual page title, but not on the page.

koogs, Friday, 8 July 2022 12:44 (one year ago) link

I tried redactle once after this thread and thought it should have been by part of speech but maybe that would have made it too easy.

Is the code for bookish available? What language is it written in? (I am just curious about how it is constructed.)

youn, Friday, 8 July 2022 14:29 (one year ago) link

it is very much 1999-style javascript, the only kind i know...

there's no server access past the initial page load, so ctrl-u will show you all the horrible code. and i think because it's on github.io and i don't pay them then the repo will be public as well.

koogs, Friday, 8 July 2022 14:43 (one year ago) link

My first time playing! Got it in 46 but totally used the title, am I not supposed to?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 8 July 2022 23:49 (one year ago) link

For insert, could you not include stopwords up to some cutoff or would that make it too easy? I am wondering how people do this!

youn, Saturday, 9 July 2022 00:52 (one year ago) link

(with lower counts for insertion)
