I was talking to a friend recently and he casually dropped into the conversation the fact that he used to know the Starmers! Lived in the same N. London street, kids played together etc. Apparently she's really nice and he's pleasant enough too. So I had to change my analysis of him from 'cunt' to 'Tory cunt', which seemed to be acceptable.

Anyway. Normal thread service will now resume!

The Banks vs Cadwalladr libel result is interesting, suggesting that her TED talk was defamatory and the statements she made were untrue but it was not clear that she intended her statement to have the meaning it did and there was a public interest defence on the meaning that she may have plausibly intended.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s appealed.

Boris Johnson on the current economic problems:

...[it's] so different from the economic crises I remember when I was younger in the 80s, in the 90s, millions of people … told they were on the scrap heap because of mass unemployment.

i.e. when Thatcher was in power.

Maybe the full report will provide some wider answers or context when it's published - sadly, Times reporting isn't above cheap & misleading sensationalism – but it's mostly quotes from heads. https://t.co/lkpLK4XDag pic.twitter.com/MhSjs8e6FW

after he's resigned he might find those grands worth of prem ticket *donations* he's become so accustomed to have been downgraded to the cheapest seats with the plebs, lol. It looks quite avaricious really, an already wealthy barrister, "mr integrity + decency" with no doubt some lucrative side gigs and a fat MP's salary and he just can't get enough free prem tickets and maybe that is the reason they haven't all been declared. Scared some Sun hack will make something of it, rather than office oversight.

Keir Starmer: “This is a document circulated by his backbench in which they call him the Conservative Corbyn. Prime Minister, I don’t think that was intended as a compliment.”

Boris Johnson makes obvious rejoinder: “First of all he [Starmer] repeatedly tried to get him elected as Prime Minister. Also speaking from experience Mr Corbyn is relatively dynamic by comparison with the rt. hon. Gentleman.”

lol, he's probably better off just sucking in the "boring" label - it's much better than being a renowned halfwit

I don't think Kinnock had Michael Foot living in his head rent free - as they say. He was doing a demolition job on the left as well - but without the obsession with publicly attacking his predecessor in parliament and quite childishly trying to brand the party as "whatever he is - we aren't that".

calzino, Wednesday, 15 June 2022 13:15 (one year ago) link

Honestly what is he playing at even on his own nasty, small-minded terms, is he trying to be challenged for the leadership or something

foot was already a compromise candidate (= not a bennite and basically there to bring all sides together) (which of course he entirely failed to do)

while easy to criticise from left and right (bcz he was terrible a a leader lol) he was also (a) not really "of the left" except in a sentimental/symbolic sense and (b) widely beloved (bcz he was genuinely a nice old man) and lauded as a great rhetorician and speaker (which he wasn't)

mark s, Wednesday, 15 June 2022 13:45 (one year ago) link

I didn't think he was as left-wing as Corbyn but he did seem to get roughed up by the tabloids a fair bit, from my defective childhood memory. back then ppl didn't say things like "Lol, he's living rent free in Shirley Williams head" but he must have been to some extent!

calzino, Wednesday, 15 June 2022 13:58 (one year ago) link

calzino, Wednesday, 15 June 2022 14:01 (one year ago) link

oh the press went for foot with great intensity -- and were happy to argue he was in the kremlin's pocket etc (cartoonist cummings was very good at brezhnev's eyebrows), while the SDP made much of how ineffectual he was (with some justice even tho fvck them forever)

but foot was tribunite* left really, which is the same milquetoast quarter kinnock was from -- and when it came to laying blame for the 1983 defeat, benn was who was being cordoned off (along with the miners and militant)

*the modern tribune bears little resemblance to the tribune of the 80s, let alonf of the 50s, when foot was its editor
