Yes. This kind of thing in general is why I have mostly preferred cryptics for a long while.

23D where I had PINE instead of PITY nearly had me with a DNF.
― Antifa Lockhart (Leee), Saturday, 11 June 2022 20:14 (one year ago) link
I wish I could do cryptics. Some day I’ll get around to it.
― Josefa, Saturday, 11 June 2022 20:19 (one year ago) link
@Leee haha same
― KPH, Saturday, 11 June 2022 20:38 (one year ago) link
I had something else wrong there
― The Crazy World of Encyclopedia Brown (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 11 June 2022 21:23 (one year ago) link
Okay, Sunday’s is fun.

loved today’s, from 1A on. :)

love to see 62D in the grid but let’s show some respect to the cornet

Yes
― Ride into the Sunship (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 18 June 2022 11:57 (one year ago) link
stumbled a bit on today’s mostly because I first filled in 60A with LETSTAKEOURTIME, which still has some shared letters with the right answer, and so led to some confusion on my part
― donna rouge, Saturday, 18 June 2022 18:35 (one year ago) link
I thought today was going to break my streak because I know nothing about comic books & never saw 12 Years a Slave and this stuff was all jammed in the top corner
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 18 June 2022 18:45 (one year ago) link
yeah today’s was pretty name-heavy, also not a comics person and think i only vaguely knew about 1A from twitter
― donna rouge, Saturday, 18 June 2022 18:48 (one year ago) link
Sunday puzzle fine I guess.
― Ride into the Sunship (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 18 June 2022 23:23 (one year ago) link
liked friday's a lot
― symsymsym, Sunday, 19 June 2022 18:29 (one year ago) link
couple funny clues along with good fill
― flopson, Sunday, 19 June 2022 21:38 (one year ago) link
The conceit of the traffic lights was pretty cool. Very hard in places for a non North American, NW corner particularly

i liked it fine enough but 43D is bad

How did people feel about today’s puzzle?
― Build My Gallows Hi Hi Hi (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 1 July 2022 00:34 (one year ago) link
nice concept once i got it but found some of the other fill kind of tricky/annoying
― donna rouge, Friday, 1 July 2022 00:35 (one year ago) link
I liked it after I figured out the gimmick, but yeah, my initial run through the grid also made me feel like I was wearing a helmet of needles.
― Antifa Lockhart (Leee), Friday, 1 July 2022 00:39 (one year ago) link
^thirdedwas that a reference to an episode of Married With Children?
― Build My Gallows Hi Hi Hi (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 1 July 2022 00:53 (one year ago) link
solid premise imo
33A is bullshit tho; hazards/traps are explicitly not on greens
― mookieproof, Friday, 1 July 2022 00:58 (one year ago) link
Tea kettles let off steam not teapots or am I crazy
― Josefa, Saturday, 2 July 2022 01:36 (one year ago) link
I did it too late at night and didn't understand the revealer correctly, drove me insane until I stared and it clicked. Clever tho. I'd no idea that word referred to a firework, either.

I like Sunday 65D
― Build My Gallows Hi Hi Hi (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 3 July 2022 01:40 (one year ago) link
Oof, today's is hard.
― Lionel Chutzpah (Leee), Friday, 8 July 2022 16:58 (one year ago) link
I did OK on it. Faster than the time on crossword fiend, anyway
― symsymsym, Saturday, 9 July 2022 02:48 (one year ago) link
can anyone here do diagramless crosswords? I think I lack the spatial intelligence to get anywhere
― symsymsym, Saturday, 9 July 2022 02:49 (one year ago) link
I used to do them, but didn't feel strongly about them either way. Are you looking for tips or something? I can't remember but they didn't seem particularly difficult, just potentially tedious.
― Mr. Art-I-Ficial (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 9 July 2022 03:19 (one year ago) link
either tips or commiseration I guess
― symsymsym, Saturday, 9 July 2022 03:21 (one year ago) link
I was just able to use the numbering and the symmetry along with the clues to fill in the grid I guess, don't remember any specifics unfortunately.
― Mr. Art-I-Ficial (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 9 July 2022 03:26 (one year ago) link
xps yeah it was a workout but managed not to irritate me, which is impressive
― assert (matttkkkk), Saturday, 9 July 2022 05:44 (one year ago) link
today’s is fiendishly hard, can’t get into the NE at all for some reason
― donna rouge, Saturday, 9 July 2022 17:02 (one year ago) link
yeah this was a real struggle
― mookieproof, Saturday, 9 July 2022 17:10 (one year ago) link
tough one for sure. boo to 12D of course and I've never heard of 6D
― symsymsym, Saturday, 9 July 2022 17:35 (one year ago) link
I managed to finish clearly and without cheating but yeah, pretty brutal. As for that NE, I'll give 18A some side eye (as well as echoing the sentiments for 6D and 12D).
― Lionel Chutzpah (Leee), Saturday, 9 July 2022 18:04 (one year ago) link
*Cleanly
Yeah I originally had CLAMBAKE and TEATRADE, and both took a while to set right. Like, wtaf is BONEATH?

I didn't like doing today's but, after solving it, I can admire its cleverness.
― Lionel Chutzpah (Leee), Thursday, 14 July 2022 20:46 (one year ago) link
bleh - the gimmick was fun but the fill was fckn awful I thought. Stupid non-phrases, obscure proper names, even one abbrev I felt was misspelled altho Google tells me the two spellings are close in usage.
― assert (matttkkkk), Friday, 15 July 2022 00:47 (one year ago) link
cute gimmick today even if I did spend ages trying to figure out how to fill in the rebus solutions
― Roz, Sunday, 17 July 2022 15:47 (one year ago) link
Well, how? I have tried several ways. Like I tried QUEEN HEART, QUEEN/HEART, and QUEEN OF HEARTS. I know my answers are right. Last time this happened it varied widely by what device, browser, app. I shouldn't care but it is frustrating
― your marshmallows may vary (Ye Mad Puffin), Sunday, 17 July 2022 16:33 (one year ago) link
I had to look it up too but this worked for me on android:
For the Queen of Clubs, you can enter any of these options: "QUEEN", "QUEENOFCLUBS", "Q", "CLUB", "C", "QUEEN/CLUB", "CLUB/QUEEN", "Q/C", or "C/Q". The easiest would just be either Q or C, both of which work.
For the non face cards, I entered the numerical values eg 10 and it worked.
― Stone Cold Steve Ostinato (Leee), Sunday, 17 July 2022 17:03 (one year ago) link
I did it the second way YMP said and it worked first time (on the app). Are you sure your answers are right?
― Wiggum Dorma (wins), Sunday, 17 July 2022 17:07 (one year ago) link
Well, I normally do Sunday on the website (old eyes), so now I'm trying it every which way in the app. And yes I am sure.
