Automatically thought of Billie Holiday's Summertime.

Metallica and W.A.S.P. both have a "For Whom the Bell Tolls"

Let's see. The most interesting one to me would be songs that aren't someone knowingly writing a song with a previously-used song title - for instance, They Might Be Giants wrote a song called "Sapphire Bullets of Pure Love" for their _Flood_ album but they clearly knew about the Mahavishnu Orchestra "song" (22 second noise track) of the same title. Then you have the Vauxhalls doing "Teenager From Outer Space" and the Meteors doing "Teenagers From Outer Space", both obviously inspired by the terrible 1959 film _Teenagers From Outer Space_. And then you have one-word titles that just get used a lot - for instance, tracks called "Television" by Chris Rainbow, Gay Cat Park, Laffing Gas, Spiritual Cramp, and Nicole Lizee.

When there was that partial copyright release of the second album by the Flame, I checked it out because I wanted to hear what their version of the Velvet Underground's "Sweet Jane" sounded like. Turns out it's a completely different song called "Sweet Jane". The Shields B-side "That's The Way It's Gonna Be" is unrelated to the Phil Ochs/Bob Gibson tune recorded by Lee Mallory. Probably a lot more as well!

So do Simon Dupree and the Big Sound! Memorable jam.

A favorite pairing, though with a misspelling: "Friends" by the Beach Boys, "Frenz" by the Fall.

Never listened to "Dark Star" b/c I hate the Grateful Dead. Heard it today, and it's all right! Then I discovered it's also a song by CS&N.

Listening to New Order's "Temptation" this morning I was struck by how similar and how different it is to Heaven 17's "Temptation".

What about when the Dave Clark Five put out a single in 1964 called “Everybody Knows (I Still Love You)” and then n 1967 they put out another single called “Everybody Knows” which was an entirely different song, and both of them were hits.

this blows my mind. one went to #37 and the other to #2! i wonder how many times it's happened?!

it's even mentioned in the wiki:

also known as "Everybody Knows (You Said Goodbye)", to avoid confusion with their 1964 song, "Everybody Knows (I Still Love You)."

lol

Reparata and the Delrons have “In My Diary” (1965) and “Look in My Diary” (1966) – the latter of which is far superior (it’s one of the best songs evah, imo), but wasn’t released until the ‘90s.
