lol "a quick AMA" and it's like 5 hours. typical Autechre

frogbs, Sunday, 5 June 2022 19:56 (one year ago) link

checked out zK based on that, it's great.

death generator (lukas), Sunday, 5 June 2022 20:01 (one year ago) link

his house looks interesting!

buffalo tomozzarella (ledge), Monday, 6 June 2022 08:16 (one year ago) link

didn't he mention moving to Norway?

StanM, Monday, 6 June 2022 10:24 (one year ago) link

having listened to the primavera set i have a question i would have asked on the ama (lol as if): why don't their live sets slap any more?

buffalo tomozzarella (ledge), Monday, 6 June 2022 12:23 (one year ago) link

Maybe you need to imbibe more horlicks.

Sounds like there's more going on in this set because Mac M1s.

Noel Emits, Monday, 6 June 2022 14:07 (one year ago) link

recent bedtime procedure has been to put a playlist of favourite and infrequently-listened-to autechre on shuffle and set the sleep timer to 60 minutes see how far i get

anyway, tonight i noticed that next year is 30 years since the first lp. 30 years.

koogs, Sunday, 19 June 2022 21:22 (one year ago) link

one month passes...

there's been another twitch ama too.

Here it is. 6 1/2 hours this time lmao

I skipped around a lot (top comment has the timestamps of specific questions) but he seems like a great dude. very socially progressive, willing to talk about anything, also answers a ton of gear questions

reissues of Confield & Draft are apparently done, but he's unsure if they'll go further. says it's up to Warp to see if there's any demand. I'd be bummed if that was it - Untilted/Quaristice/Oversteps/Exai/elseq are all amazing and I'd buy them in a heartbeat

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 4 August 2022 21:12 (one year ago) link

I think ILM alone would gladly be enough demand

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 4 August 2022 21:12 (one year ago) link

I can't remember when they started being so forthcoming and interactive. Maybe they always were and I never really noticed? Anyway, I love the transparency, I love how they make such unique, mysterious music, but then seem to be such good guys totally willing to answer questions for hours.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 4 August 2022 21:21 (one year ago) link

I guess it also requires some degree of confidence in what they are up to. You could give someone the same rig, the same gear, but it just wouldn't be the same music. It would be like giving a drummer John Bonham's set. Good luck, you know?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 4 August 2022 21:22 (one year ago) link

their humbleness is also something to behold, you'd think people making music like this would be fairly pretentious and all "yeah some people just won't get it" about it but instead they say stuff like "we thought it was shit too but eventually we liked it enough to release"

frogbs, Thursday, 4 August 2022 21:27 (one year ago) link

would be great if they could reissue the envane and cichlisuite 2x12s

the late great, Thursday, 4 August 2022 21:55 (one year ago) link

imo those double packs are crucial for understanding the progression from “artificial intelligence” type idm practitioners to max msp generative music & granular synthesis auteurs

Aside from the odd interview they were quite hermetic about their process etc until the monster watmm ama thread in about ... 2013?

I just want elseq on CD

I only caught the last half hour of the AMA on Saturday so thanks for posting, frogbs!

Sean answers my question "Grateful Dead: love or hate?" at 6:09:25

I liked his response, not at all what I expected him to say (i.e., "sorry, I think they're shit" lol)

J. Sam, Thursday, 4 August 2022 23:32 (one year ago) link

I have a million things to do but I still plan to watch or at least listen to this entire AMA, fuck it all

Paul Ponzi, Thursday, 4 August 2022 23:34 (one year ago) link

i’ll listen to that ama for sure, want to hear him answer about the dead

also, re elseq, fourthed in agreement on a cd issue

sknybrg, Thursday, 4 August 2022 23:43 (one year ago) link

I'll dip into these, not sure how far I'll get

True but vinyl seems ahistorical for cichli

death generator (lukas), Friday, 5 August 2022 00:22 (one year ago) link

I know people love overwrought "creative" descriptions of Ae tracks so here goes - both the melody and rhythm of "9 chr0" is like those damn rabbits in Mario, they are constantly hopping away from you, by which I mean whatever you expect them to do they do something else. nothing repeats, everything seems to be random. actually concentrating on it hurts me small brain

frogbs, Friday, 5 August 2022 04:04 (one year ago) link

? I have cichli on vinyl from its original release

xp Jealous! I found a used EP7.2 in the wild and I cherish it. Shining star in my Ae collection is the Are We R Why / We R Are Why single though

octobeard, Friday, 5 August 2022 06:23 (one year ago) link

oh and the art on each was completely different from the cd!

the late great, Friday, 5 August 2022 06:23 (one year ago) link

When I first heard 9 chr0 I thought there was some kind of repeating blues type chord progression to the whole thing. xps

Noel Emits, Friday, 5 August 2022 09:22 (one year ago) link

Like some heavy stoner riffing done with tuned feedback and comb filters instead of guitars.

Noel Emits, Friday, 5 August 2022 09:25 (one year ago) link

just saw this on the youtube comments thread ama that someone spreadshot (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1n9ZMCbzld6EvMVr0u7P3OBQNiUfmV9CNF53cKpIq_iQ/edit#gid=0)

"you know, this could be a funny question but like we're just asking you stuff, but are there any questions you have for us?"
"yeah i really need to know if the ship of theseus is fungible or not. asking for a friend."

i lolled.

dear confusion the catastrophe waitress (ledge), Friday, 5 August 2022 09:28 (one year ago) link

I only listened to a little of the AMA (because it's really long lol) but someone asked him if he would ever consider vocals in Autechre and he laughs and says some people will hate this answer but ... yes! And he suggested *he* would want to sing! But he also seemed to recognize that want and should are different things, so I doubt we ever get that (at least as recognizable singing). However, I would love to hear a collaboration with a good/expressive drummer improvising around their melodies while they simultaneously sample, chop up and rearrange the playing. Not sure how it would work, but could be cool as a one-off or something, like the time I saw Yo La Tengo with Susie Ibarra.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 5 August 2022 13:17 (one year ago) link

? I have cichli on vinyl from its original release

I have nothing to back up what I said, cichli just feels digital to me

death generator (lukas), Friday, 5 August 2022 15:01 (one year ago) link

Which I know was tlg's point.

But late 90s idm ... people were buying that stuff, by and large, on compact disc, is what my infalliable intuition tells me.

death generator (lukas), Friday, 5 August 2022 16:55 (one year ago) link

don’t think you’re wrong, but assume that was the case in all genres outside of, like club-oriented dance singles and diy punk or hardcore!

the late great, Friday, 5 August 2022 17:26 (one year ago) link

yeah I get that, I spend a lot of time in CD stores in the late 90s and I don't remember ever seeing vinyl unless it was like, a stack of dollar polka records in the corner. I have a copy of Big Willie Style and it kinda freaks me out b/c that CD was everywhere and it never occurred to me that they made a vinyl version as well. I guess it was for DJs.

frogbs, Friday, 5 August 2022 17:33 (one year ago) link

I was on a DJ promo mailing list for a few years and was sent Anvil Vapre, Envane and EP7 12"s but I bought the CDs cos they were easier to play. No point or argument, just privileged times I guess.

Noel Emits, Friday, 5 August 2022 17:50 (one year ago) link

One of the early records, I think it was the Anti EP, said “incomplete without surface noise” on the sleeve

assert (matttkkkk), Friday, 5 August 2022 22:31 (one year ago) link

Tri Repetae I think -- they make a big deal out of that on the Gonkcast podcast

two months pass...

Fantastic show, accurately summed up by this tweet:

was so awesome to find out how it feels to be a terrified little mouse under some mysterious machine in a huge factory, thank you autechre i loved every minute

— Toby (@_toby231) October 7, 2022

Huge grin on my face within the first five seconds from the pummelling percussion. Rhythms varying from basic to frenetic to lost & found, and I don't care if this sounds corny but i had a stronger than ever sense of sounds being twisted and sculpted before my very ears.

ledge, Saturday, 8 October 2022 08:49 (one year ago) link

I’ve hallucinated at both Ae shows I’ve seen (nothing beyond alcohol in my system). And the sculpting comment is otm.

assert (matttkkkk), Saturday, 8 October 2022 09:22 (one year ago) link

I had my eyes closed for a lot of it and near hallucinated - not seeing but imagining, without trying, forms moving and changing.

ledge, Saturday, 8 October 2022 16:53 (one year ago) link

anyone go to the second set? to both?

ledge, Saturday, 8 October 2022 16:58 (one year ago) link

So ... it was a gig played in darkness and if you had to leave your seat you couldn't go back? Or have I misunderstood Twitter?

djh, Saturday, 8 October 2022 19:13 (one year ago) link

that is correct. it wasn't dark for the support and you could go for a piss before the main event as long as you were back in time but with ten mins to go the queue for the gents was huge.
