Semantle: Can you think like a computer?

Got it in 38 after hitting a 993/1000 word somewhat randomly.

Got #124 in 61 guesses. I knew it was some sort of receptacle from guess 10 or so, but then took another 40 guesses to nail it.

three good days in a row (28, 17, 35) - feels weird, like I’m not playing semantle unless I’m busy yelling at my phone after 100 cold guesses

I solved Semantle #124 in 24 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 31.58 (628/1000). My penultimate guess had a similarity of 23.49.

#123 in 18 guesses word was related to my job

#124 in 78 guesses guessed a lot of words related to domesticity and water, because those are related to my job

I'll be interested to see if anyone gets #125 without any hints, because I certainly couldn't have (125 guesses, but with 2 hints so cheating).

I solved Semantle #125 in 82 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 9.62. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #44. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 54.24 (998/1000).

no hints used, realised what kind of word we were looking for when I got "you" at #65 but it still took me another 17 guesses to land on the right word.

I got it in 124, had #980 'like' at guess 2 but that wasn't much help - by about guess 50 and 20 random greens I figured it wasn't yer typical verb/noun/adjective, and even started guessing pronouns but 'like' remained stubbornly at the top and 'mine' wasn't even green - because of the other meaning I suppose - so I didn't go through them all straight away.

My opening moves vary but are usually something like car, city, person, strategy, happy, military, politics, ball... with the idea of nailing down early what part of speech, whether we're talking about something abstract or concrete, and covering some of the obvious domains. Doesn't always work, but today's was relatively straightforward, got it on 38

Starting to get back into it after I shared with a friend who's keen! Got lucky with this one, no clue taken.

Got it in 102 but I did get a cheating hint, which was interesting in itself: it was 'piss', which at least put me in the direction of a bodily function and I got it soon after

I solved Semantle #127 in 39 guesses. Got there via “thought”>”think” into “ponder” (first green at #13) and “ruminate” (926 at #24). Stayed on the figurative track instead of going straight for the bodily/physical, but that brought me the solution anyway.

56: once I got green with eat I got it in four. yesterday's: can I think of a material which isn't plastic or wood or metal and might be used in construction? apparently not! Well I guess there were a lot of distractions that day.

Got #128 in 21 guesses - I think the first time I've got in the green with my first guess which was 'car'. Then 'passenger' in the 900s and I got it soon after.

Man, I am struggling with #128 for some reason. 150 guesses and only two very, very low greens which haven't proved helpful thus far.

yeah i had to get hints for this one, some of which were not at all useful.

Yeah, that was ugly and required two hints. Got lost in a major detour when "purse" and "briefcase" got me relatively high greens and went down that path far too long.

Got it in 150. My stupid detour was incumbent, candidate, reelection stuff, which did help in the end, but completely distracted me initially.

103. Took me ages to get green too but once I did, it was relatively quick

Pretty good given all the ways this could've potentially gone given my early greens.

Wall of greens: hit almost every word in the 980s and 990s before I finally got it

WTF is going on with today's semantle? I'm on 400 guesses, still refusing to give up, but it seems to be all over the place.

I gave up after 11 hints which took me right to the top. Would still never have got it.

I gave up too despite getting 989 and 990 (and 995 after two hints). I doubt I would’ve gotten it either.

Just had a look, very odd, it's like the neural net had a brainfart.

Worst thing is I was actually closer to it before I resorted to hints. I had like and had even tried akin at one point, but they weren't notably high - they definitely made a lot more sense given the answer than clamored and spellbind, though, which completely threw me for a loop. Gave up at over 700 guesses and around 4 hints.

i was talking with Dave about Semantle lately and it turns out that when he originally shared the game with me, he didn't intend for me to share it with anyone else but it didn't occur to him to mention that. When I shared it here, this became the accidental beta audience. Its popularity apparently blossomed from this post. Good job everyone!

I've been test driving Dave's new game and he's been pretty explicit about not sharing it this time! Once it's ready to beta, I will ask if we can give it a go here. I can say that it is less abstruse than Semantle but is equally frustrating, at least in its current format.

I tried the app on my phone this morning and immediately uninstalled it. It looks like shit, they've tinkered with it and it doesn't accept UK spellings like "organisation" etc.. The original format was quite perfect and didn't need any improvements.

not a bad run today, hit an early green with atom and it was a short hop from there.

Mine was a very slow progression from child - angelic - heavenly - planetary - cosmic - gravitational - FOUND! and as you could imagine, a LOT of wrong guesses in between. But I liked the journey there, got it in 112.
