Is the plan not to allow the use of imperial units (i.e permit US goods to be sold without relabelling) rather than ‘switching’ from metric to imperial?

I think Reeves will be fuming that they didn't go lower with their own wind tax credit proposal. Reeves is genuinely dangerous and she probably believes they'd have won in '15 if Miliband hadn't gone for compromised austerity

My daughter got a platinum jubilee book about the Queen, she also got a nice mug w/ the Queen's face on it. The book was sent to all kids in the UK and it cost 12 million pounds to do that. Some of her classmates only get to eat during the free school lunch they get.

I hold no brief for this character, and haven't read OE's book (maybe one day), but I find this argument, against OE's narrative, broadly convincing.

The logic works backwards: the unacknowledged premise is we lost the election because of Remain, ergo Remain was a Blairite plot, ergo Starmer made it happen, ergo anyone working with Starmer's plot was undermining LOTO. Little room for nuance or differing views within the left

— Michael Chessum (@michael_chessum) June 2, 2022

It reflects a broader contradictory fact that a) many people on the Left were against Brexit, b) many people on the Left now think being against Brexit was, at best, ill-advised. This contradiction seems involved in much of the awkwardness around this issue.

the pinefox, Thursday, 2 June 2022 12:44 (one year ago) link

and Kieth just didn't have the nous to be playing some 3d chess long-game to tether the Left to a corpse. I think he had ambitions for the leadership and a disdain for Corbynism, but events panned out favourably for him rather than some of Eagleton's dubious versions of events. I don't doubt he wanted to destroy the project, but i don't believe he was constantly working towards that end.

Unlike many others, I haven't read THE STARMER PROJECT. But if I was having doubts about its merit, this tweet is tending to dispel them.

It's a dire book - apart from the "bad Keir theory of history" it skips really critical events in Starmer's rise - like the 2019 conference fiasco - with barely a paragraph. Either you were there, or you do your research thoroughly.

— Paul Mason (@paulmasonnews) June 3, 2022

the pinefox, Saturday, 4 June 2022 12:21 (one year ago) link

Eagleton deserves criticism for the brexit section but the parts on Starmer's DPP era are excellent and tell you more about what kind of a scumbag he is than Mason claiming he's going to advance the struggle, lol!

Mason popped up on a BBC WS program as some kind of social media misinformation eggspurt the other day, of course someone who has shat himself in public so many times will be very concerned about people who haven't got 500K+ followers taking the piss out of him for being an incomprehensible bullshit merchant and f/t clown at the best of times

some arseholes in Wakefield! Polling suggests they'll piss the byelection despite Starmer's dictatorial selection process angering the local clp and creating disquiet in the area. If it's a low turnout it might be more closely run than the polling suggests.

this is the app that has turned everyone into Banky. I got some amusing results from "kier starmer drinking piss out of a wellington boot" and "kier starmer passionately kissing jimmy savile". I did a Corbyn one and it made look like Popeye, lol.

calzino, Sunday, 5 June 2022 13:26 (one year ago) link

The BBC programme that Calzino refers to is actually quite sinister. My understanding is that the journalist involved has tried to get one of the people interviewed / challenged on the programme (a socialist media analyst) fired from his job. It seems that Mason has been involved with this, certainly seems to have approved of it.

In other words it's going beyond knockabout allegations, let alone the free exchange of ideas, into a level more like McCarthyism.

the pinefox, Sunday, 5 June 2022 13:45 (one year ago) link

I'd not read that background story to the program, the journalist who did it is also an old work colleague of Mason's from his ch 4 News days.

calzino, Sunday, 5 June 2022 13:52 (one year ago) link

It's one thing being concerned about mostly insignificant people clicking like on Russian state affiliated media posts. But Mason with his biggish media platform accusing rando lefties of being Putin apologists is not good. Although one of the college lecturers featured on the program was an anti vaxer.
