the previous earthquakes bit below on bbc link doesn't even mention the 2007 one and that was a 4.3

calzino, Monday, 30 May 2022 19:10 (one year ago) link

there was a 5.2 in 1990

I don't understand how the UK gets earthquakes when it is slap bang in the middle of a huge tectonic plate

calzino, Monday, 30 May 2022 19:26 (one year ago) link

The nearest subduction zones to Britain lie at the Hellenic Arc, south of Greece and in the Caribbean.

my favourite fact abt the biggest uk quake in living memory, the dogger quake of 1931, is that it caused the head of the dr crippen waxwork at madame tussauds to fall off

It’s right that families get the support they need.

But it’s also right that the country knows how the Chancellor is paying for it. https://t.co/s7ecwP9QpC

Suppose that Paul Mason is selected as a candidate (might not happen) and wins (might happen) --

How do you see his career as an MP going?

My hunch is that he would have some kind of junior post, say in defence policy, quite soon.

I also envisage him quitting something, making a big deal of walking out of a post or committee, on principle, and posting lots of tweets and articles explaining why.

I don't think he will find it so easy to blame Stalinists for what goes on in the UK Parliament, as it contains none. Though that hasn't stopped him so far.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 31 May 2022 12:36 (one year ago) link

He just won't be selected. It would like all my xmasses at once!

if there is one person who positively exudes "radical redistribution" it certainly isn't the shadow chancellor and Mason is thick as pigshit if he doesn't know this already. GND has been gutted and the only major spending program proposed by Labour is on nuclear submarines and military expansion to contribute more to NATO "to maintain parity with potential adversaries" and of course Kieth will offer complete impunity for armed forces to commit torture and murder.

calzino, Tuesday, 31 May 2022 13:23 (one year ago) link

Is the plan not to allow the use of imperial units (i.e permit US goods to be sold without relabelling) rather than ‘switching’ from metric to imperial?

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Tuesday, 31 May 2022 13:24 (one year ago) link

I think Reeves will be fuming that they didn't go lower with their own wind tax credit proposal. Reeves is genuinely dangerous and she probably believes they'd have won in '15 if Miliband hadn't gone for compromised austerity

My daughter got a platinum jubilee book about the Queen, she also got a nice mug w/ the Queen's face on it. The book was sent to all kids in the UK and it cost 12 million pounds to do that. Some of her classmates only get to eat during the free school lunch they get.

I hold no brief for this character, and haven't read OE's book (maybe one day), but I find this argument, against OE's narrative, broadly convincing.

The logic works backwards: the unacknowledged premise is we lost the election because of Remain, ergo Remain was a Blairite plot, ergo Starmer made it happen, ergo anyone working with Starmer's plot was undermining LOTO. Little room for nuance or differing views within the left

— Michael Chessum (@michael_chessum) June 2, 2022

It reflects a broader contradictory fact that a) many people on the Left were against Brexit, b) many people on the Left now think being against Brexit was, at best, ill-advised. This contradiction seems involved in much of the awkwardness around this issue.

the pinefox, Thursday, 2 June 2022 12:44 (one year ago) link

and Kieth just didn't have the nous to be playing some 3d chess long-game to tether the Left to a corpse. I think he had ambitions for the leadership and a disdain for Corbynism, but events panned out favourably for him rather than some of Eagleton's dubious versions of events. I don't doubt he wanted to destroy the project, but i don't believe he was constantly working towards that end.
