Man, seeing Bo Hopkins' name in the opening credits almost always promised a good time.

^^^ OTM ^^^

Bo was the coolest, loved him

Lester Piggott! Yes, I had forgotten he was still alive

Alba, Sunday, 29 May 2022 08:46 (one year ago) link

Yeah, I remember posting him in the "people you were surprised to find were still alive" thread years ago.

joni mitchell jarre (anagram), Sunday, 29 May 2022 08:53 (one year ago) link

I expected him to be much older than 86, he never seemed young in my memory.

Dan Worsley, Sunday, 29 May 2022 09:12 (one year ago) link

He only retired from racing in 1995!

yeah he resumed his racing career after getting released from prison. He inspired some hilarious "limited edition prints" in his time. I once got into trouble for drawing some nobs on one in a bookies.

"Lester Piggott's Nightmare"

Are those all the horses he killed meeting him in hell?

Portrait Of A Dissolvi Ng Drea M (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Sunday, 29 May 2022 10:36 (one year ago) link

yep, they are the jury!

calzino, Sunday, 29 May 2022 10:37 (one year ago) link

when I used to work as a relief betting shop manager one of the regular manager's had a lot of their own horseracing art on the wall behind the counter. Really hilariously lame stuff with titles like "The Bend at Tattenham Corner" and they had a Piggot one titled "The King of Epsom" lol!

calzino, Sunday, 29 May 2022 10:43 (one year ago) link

RIP. Believe he was the hero of Tony in the Up documentaries.

Patricia Brake, versatile British actress probably best known for playing Fletch's daughter in Porridge or as Eth opposite Ian Lavender and Jimmy Edwards in the TV revival of The Glums.

"Fletch's daughter in Porridge" are you fucking kidding me right now

I mean RIP, but there was a show called PORRIDGE?

we need outrage! we need dicks!! (the table is the table), Sunday, 29 May 2022 15:14 (one year ago) link

A sitcom about life in jail, "doing porridge" is slang for spending time inside.

I mean, I actually love that as a slang term, it’s just funny w/o context— like a show called OATMEAL. Fulfils a lot of Bosom Manor stereotypes.

Yeah Porridge is probably top 10 British sitcoms of all time. I get it seems weird to the rest of the world though.

Honorary Canadian, Ronnie Hawkins.

His first single, his "Bo Diddley" cover, was 1958; he's not quite in that founding-fathers group, but pretty damn close.

clemenza, Sunday, 29 May 2022 18:33 (one year ago) link

porridge was great, can confirm

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 29 May 2022 19:01 (one year ago) link

Not one ‘duff’ episode.

Mark G, Sunday, 29 May 2022 19:48 (one year ago) link

There was a US version of Porridge btw.

somewhere there's a tweet about how britishes tv shows are either 20 episodes spread out over a decade or every single day for 50 years

tbf it seems that porridge had *21* episodes

mookieproof, Sunday, 29 May 2022 20:48 (one year ago) link

Meanwhile the Simpsons thread has just been people complaining that the show should have ended at Season 8 for the last 20 years.

Marion Barber, Cowboys runningback

Marion Barber was the definition of a tenacious runner. He always made something out of nothing.

This was the most incredible 2-yard run ever.

Synth pioneer Dave Smith of Sequential Circuits. Created many iconic synths, namely the Prophet 5, and drove the creation of MIDI. That alone was world changing.

RIP, Tin Drum wouldn't have sounded the same without him. Speaking of which, Tom Oberheim is still with us at 85!

The 1980s wouldn't have sounded the same without him! As was once noted, it's quicker to list the artists from the era who *didn't* use the Prophet-5, than those who did. RIP.

hello duckness my old friend (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 2 June 2022 10:23 (one year ago) link

I had a drum tracks but traded it for someone’s second 707, as I already had a DMX. I have a prophet 600 which was always great but I got the gigli upgrade and now it’s even better. When I was in high school I wanted an analog synth at a time when they weren’t so collectible and almost bought a pro one, I think it was like 300 bucks! Big mistake. Also almost bought a Prophet 3000 sampler from Wine Country. Did own a Yamaha TG33 which owed some degree of influence as Smith brought the vector tech to Korg and Yamaha post sequential.

Howard Johnson's restaurants. Although the last one, in Lake George, NY, was really an ex-HoJo gone independent that reverted to the name without having any connection to the original company.

HJ had so much nostalgia power for a certain generation I'm surprised no one successfully exploited the trademark.
