Was gonna say that even for this psychotic country the dissonance of all this jubilee bollocks going on while everything just gets worse and worse is gonna be wild, but then I remembered all the 2012 shite happening within a year of riots

Silver Jubilee, 1981 Royal wedding... it's almost like these things get more hysterical and north korean the more society seems to be crumbling. I remember 2002 as being relatively muted tbh, that was pre-Iraq, high Blairism end of politics times.

the backdrop of the invention of monarchy as mass public spectacle back in the 1890s was a decade of social and political unrest in the UK and the wider empire -- so i'm not convinced this element has amped up really (i am convinced that the sense of collapse is far greater, as is the actual fact of brokenness)

I am at the Liverpool fan park in Paris, fans are chanting

"Phillip is dead.
The queen is senile,
And Andrew is a paedophile"

Just be thankful these scenes aren't during the Jubilee #RowntreeInParis #ChampionsLeagueFinal

A very Real England life:

"As Piggott entered his ninth decade there were calls from some in the racing fraternity not only for the restoration of his OBE, but for him to be knighted. Though neither of those things happened, at the 2017 Royal Ascot meeting there was a warm greeting from the Queen which suggested that she had, personally at least, forgiven him.

In 2012, Piggott left the marital home to live with Barbara FitzGerald in Geneva, an arrangement to which his wife gave her public blessing."

when I read on the RIP thread that he was someone's personal hero I was remembering reading that he was one of the most miserly, mean-spirited and outright horrible people in the world of flat racing, and that is something!

it's The Bristol in the east end of Glasgow - notorious before this as a real hotbed of violence and sectarianism, no surprises they've fully leaned into this

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 2 June 2022 23:49 (one year ago) link

it's The Bristol in the east end of Glasgow

i was horrified to discover there are 3 jubilee events happening in Glasgow this weekend. The Church Of Scotland have organised a street party in Possil and there are two others at undisclosed locations - they are patently trying to keep it on the lowdown but it's fairly obvious where they will be. i hope to stealthily take down at least one UJ flag before the end of the weekend. FTQ, 4 ever!

It's the only way to make the concept of the UK work after all.

Doodles Diamond (Tom D.), Friday, 3 June 2022 07:57 (one year ago) link

As well as living close to the above-mentioned Bristol Bar and its delightful neighbour The Loudon Tavern, I also regularly run through Bridgeton, where there's a pub called The Windsor Bar and lots of very dispiriting street decorations at the best of times, let alone right now. The heavies were out in force putting up flags on lampposts last night up and down the main roads in these parts. I have to try and disguise my look of incredulous disgust while running by. We're braced for some kind of nonsense around here over the weekend, sadly.

brain (krakow), Friday, 3 June 2022 08:00 (one year ago) link

A walk around a couple of areas of Edinburgh yesterday revealed no bunting whatsoever, although apparently there's a big screen in Princes Street Gardens for royalists to view the festivities on while among their own kind. Fucked if I'm going anywhere near to find out how busy it is though.

the classic emerson lake & palmer line-up (Matt #2), Friday, 3 June 2022 08:41 (one year ago) link

Very few flags or bullshit around our walk today (London) from Denmark Hill through the edges of Brixton, even into the posh parts of Stockwell, Little Portugal going into Nine Elms and then on into Pimlico. We unfortunately decided to walk onto Charing Cross to get back SE. There were some crowds around the latter coming on into 6pm but not too bad.

It was ALL very quiet of royalists until we got to the Traf. Sq. Nobody here cares.

kraudive, Saturday, 4 June 2022 00:08 (one year ago) link

I haven't seen a single flag in my area. I've avoided watching anything about this on TV but could it be that it hasn't lived up to the hype?
