The song is just ok, but it's great to hear her voice again. Also digging the quasi-MBV whammy guitar on the chorus

I guess it makes sense that this already sounds so dated considering we've been waiting for Masochism since 2015. I suspect this song's been sitting around either finished or unfinished for as long as 8 years.

here's hoping the new single is more memorable than "Downhill Lullaby"

I really like this, not sure it was worth waiting a decade for but I love the bending guitars in the chorus and her voice sounds great.

It’s too bad this stuff couldn’t have just come out as an album as opposed to drop by drop. (There are probably extenuating circumstances for why, of course.) As a mass of tunes, there would be a different feel to things.

As it happens, listening to NTRT last weekend, first time in years, I thought, this is surely one of the decade's most powerful albums, no? One of the more searing album-long inquiries into industry exploitation.

i like the song tho! it's no revelation but it's solid. btw "downhill lullaby" was great in its way and would probably be viewed more favorably if it had actually been followed with the album instead of being some random one-off thing

I never became a music writer for a reason, but even I would never use the phrases "pretty bland" or "rock-tinged." I guess everyone's got to start somewhere, and that's what blogspot used to be for. Is there nowhere else to practice writing now before Pitchfork hires you?

It’s a great single imho. People are confused because it’s retro or whatever. But she clearly cares about this stuff—the purpose of the surfaces—to a greater degree than most. Lyrics are great

I think it's great, and it made more of an impression than "Downhill Lullaby" (which I did like, but I'm sure I will appreciate more in album context if that ever happens).

my brief run of posts upthread where i expressed my indifference toward/hatred of night time, my time especially hilarious now that i think it's the best record of its kind, whatever that kind is, a mutation of new//wave//alt//rock so breathy and aggressive and wounded and hostile and seductively dangerous it's like a mouth in the earth opening onto hell. title track is like whatever machine made the rest of the record broke down and started producing only motion blurs. best album ever

i may have already said this but i expected an immaculately pretty synth-pop effort from sky and got something much grungier and more gross so it makes sense why i couldn't get my head around it at first. thank god though

think i also identified new wave specifically because so much of this album sounds like a blondie record that was remastered too hot (a compliment, a perfect sound)

xp yeah "Omanko" is absolutely outrageous. It reminds me of Stereolab's "OLV 26" with noisier guitars. And I totally agree that every song on the album is better than "Everything Is Embarrassing"

Thanks to this thread revive I searched for a second-hand CD of NTMT. I thought the copy at my local record store was outrageously priced at NZ$12.95 but then checked Discogs... Oh my... Immediately added to my cart.

The vinyl prices are next level. Discogs at its best.

Took me a decade to be aware of it, but this album is pretty cool. Wish I had been aware back then, 25 year old me would’ve loved it.
