bomani is incapable of admitting hes wrong

Spottie, Tuesday, 17 May 2022 16:03 (one year ago) link

correct

k3vin k., Tuesday, 17 May 2022 21:38 (one year ago) link

I generally don't follow the drafts, was Ayton considered a bad pick at the time?

frogbs, Tuesday, 17 May 2022 21:40 (one year ago) link

he was the consensus top pick m/l but with a ton of the more informed people saying hey you might want to check out this kid who won the euroleague mvp at 19

lag∞n, Tuesday, 17 May 2022 21:46 (one year ago) link

the really crazy pick was bagley at 2

lag∞n, Tuesday, 17 May 2022 21:47 (one year ago) link

tho when you consider the ancient balkan blood feud aspect it starts to make sense

lag∞n, Tuesday, 17 May 2022 21:50 (one year ago) link

there was lots of talking head types being like "well you can't pass up a 7 footer this skilled!" ayton also put up legit good stats at arizona, and there was the local angle, he seemed like a pretty safe pick (which has turned out to be true) and because luka was not in our faces the way american prospects are where lots of ppl feel like they have informed opinions i think the feeling was mostly "hey can't blame them for picking ayton." i don't remember there being tons of prominent voices being like "this will be a disastrous decision that the suns will regret for decades." people *did* say that about the kings and the hawks, but i think ayton seemed like "modern" enough of a center that the suns generally were given a pass pretty much up until two days ago

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 May 2022 21:52 (one year ago) link

it was a classic example of picking fit over best player available. the suns had book so they needed to pair him w a center. it is interesting to think about booker and luka on the court together. seems like a match made in heaven, booker is better off ball.

― lag∞n, Tuesday, May 17, 2022 5:47 PM (five minutes ago)

if i'm not mistaken it seemed like they were insulted by whatever interactions they were having w/ luka and perhaps some of the other top guys and really gravitated towards bagley because he told the kings he would be excited to be picked by them. which turned out to be a career killing decision for him, but the kings never seemed to stop and think like "maybe this guy is happy to get picked by us because nobody else in their right minds would draft him number 2."

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 May 2022 21:56 (one year ago) link

reportedly divac also doesnt like lukas dad

ppl saying they shdnt take luka cause they already have a dribbling scorer was wild as if its not ok to have two of those guys

lag∞n, Tuesday, 17 May 2022 22:02 (one year ago) link

i wanna say there was a number of guys in that draft who refused to work out for the kings, shit like that. bagley was the guy who was like "i would LOVE to be drafted number 2 overall even if it's by the kings!"

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 May 2022 22:02 (one year ago) link

same tbh

hey you know what the suns couldve used in the 2022 playoffs...

Spottie, Tuesday, 17 May 2022 22:12 (one year ago) link

i bet they woulda rather had brunson than ayton in that series

― lag∞n, Tuesday, May 17, 2022 5:46 PM (thirty-two minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

what an insane accomplishment btw way more impressive than say winning the ncaa player of the year as a freshman a thing thats only happened three times (kd, ad, zion) (tho obvs its gone from unheard of to merely unusual during the one and done era)

lag∞n, Tuesday, 17 May 2022 22:23 (one year ago) link

luka's euroleague stats as a teenager were miles better than the euroleague stats of guys who became very solid nba pros

in places all over the world, real stuff be happening (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 17 May 2022 22:34 (one year ago) link

a guy like nikola mirotic was putting up numbers half as good at age 24 that luka was at 18

in places all over the world, real stuff be happening (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 17 May 2022 22:35 (one year ago) link

yeah it actually makes for a more stable projection than college. teams just invented reasons not to draft him, didn’t think he was athletic enough, stuff like that. really should’ve been one of the easiest picks in draft history. again i give the mavs front office a lot of credit for betting on luka to the tune of 2 first round picks when everyone else around them didn’t even wanna draft him period. and of course 2 first round picks for luka now looks like one of the heists of the century, i don’t think you could legally trade enough first round picks to even acquire luka at this point, i think he’s quite literally untradeable. i have no idea what you could even come up with to give the mavs to even make them consider trading him.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 May 2022 22:57 (one year ago) link

that’s the thing. with a lot of euro prospects, you’re projecting future production from young guys who barely see the floor but doncic was just as young as many of those highly-drafted projects and he was the literal mvp

I clicked on this just to see what my guy Brian was saying and two minutes later I’m consumed by the question of what’s going on with the Utah Jazz. It’s my only quest in life to find out. This is perfect television. https://t.co/Cf4mDdo22E
