Be interesting to know if it's just me, but - I'm in the UK - this is genuinely the first time I've heard the Juice Newton version.

This is kind of amazing to me. Although to be honest I have only heard two Juice Newton songs, and both seems to be pale copies of previous versions.

Juice Newton without hesitation. I dig her early '80s hits.

plus cool name
― Deez NFTs (Neanderthal), Saturday, 7 May 2022 13:48 (one year ago) link
Heard the Juice version first.
But Evie Sands has the coolest voice for this song. The day I heard her version I instantly preferred it, so she gets my vote.
imo the key part of the song is the lyric "And if we're victims of the night / I won't be blinded by the light" going into the 2nd chorus. And I really like how P.P. Arnold treats that part.

can I vote for "Billy" in the TV show Outer Range?
― sarahell, Saturday, 7 May 2022 14:53 (one year ago) link
omg Connie Francis was offered this song first but turned it down. That's a missed opportunity.

No Skeeter Davis?!? Her version is beautiful!
Still working through it, but so far it's Merrilee Rush for me.

The Juice Newton version is kinda saccharine but it's growing on me like (sugary) ivy.

Feel like I post this is all the time, but I have met one of Chip Taylor’s musical collaborators upon several occasions. Sometimes ask him fanboy questions and sometimes he even answers.

When one Zooms or otherwise meets with PP Arnold does one call her 'PP'?
I can never quite square in my head that she sang on 'Poor Boy' by Nick Drake.
― Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Sunday, 8 May 2022 17:42 (one year ago) link
pat
she's not actually that keen on "pp", it was kind of foisted on her by management

For some reason, I was thinking that Crystal Gayle had done this and saw that this has already been covered: Crystal Gayle: S/D, C/D, etc.

My favourite version is the one that plays in my head, where the word “angel” is replaced with “asshole.”

Wonder why people suddenly got tired of this song 14 years ago
― Josefa, Thursday, 12 May 2022 17:57 (one year ago) link
I voted for PP Arnold, based on listening to the versions by Merrilee Rush, Juice Newton, Arnold, and Nina Simone back-to-back last night.

i remember being in a high school summer program in... 2007? one girl in the program from greece was riding with a few of us in someone's car and ended up playing the shaggy song at random (maybe on shuffle). i don't think she had heard it before but she instantly adored it and would hijack the ipod and put it on repeat every time she rode in the car with us thereafter. i think most ppl were somewhat annoyed but i thought it was amusing and didn't mind
