Onto #89 and this is a first for me: I've got 999/1000 and I still can't get it. I'm going to feel like a right moron if I give up.

gave up at 981

morality, chivalry, religions were not leading me to equality

This is a first: I solved Semantle #88 in 158 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 0.25. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #157. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 47.35 (971/1000). https://semantle.novalis.org/

156 guesses without a green, then #971, then the word.

This was on alcohol.

I solved Semantle #89 in 38 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 12.09. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #31.

piece of pish!

calzino, Thursday, 28 April 2022 01:10 (two years ago) link

Well that was a mighty slog, got it in 171. First green was marriage, which led me down all sorts of rabbit holes, but eventually got to gender, then feminism, then emancipation (999/1000) which had me stuck for a while...

Zelda Zonk, Thursday, 28 April 2022 01:14 (two years ago) link

from prejudice my last half dozen guesses were top greens and I just knew I'd nail it fast.

calzino, Thursday, 28 April 2022 01:19 (two years ago) link

#89 in 87. weird game, my highest guess was 942/1000. landed on the solution abt 25 random guesses after.

I solved Semantle #89 in 100 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 3.34. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #74. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 36.38 (672/1000). https://semantle.novalis.org/

when the list of greens covers this much ground it leads to some real frustrating games. communism was outside the green but socialism was 948. republic was outside the green but democracy was 988. etc

, Thursday, 28 April 2022 06:36 (two years ago) link

A slog indeed!

I solved Semantle #89 in 185 guesses with 2 hints. My first guess had a similarity of 8.11. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #29. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 24.58.

went round the houses with words connected with religion. Used the hint twice. Not sure I will bother again!

I solved Semantle #89 in 57 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 7.92. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #34. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 50.28 (975/1000). https://semantle.novalis.org/

One of my better ones today with a relatively straightforward run from first green to finish.

First green was 'marriage', stuck on general stuff surrounding that until I hit on 'gay', easy from there.

emil.y, Thursday, 28 April 2022 13:32 (two years ago) link

feeling very dim but i'm stuck, with #998 and (after a hint) #999 and all the words mentioned in spoilers above.

ledge, Thursday, 28 April 2022 14:52 (two years ago) link

after getting #999 i was disappointed it wasn't manumission

I had peace/happiness/prosperity, but I didn't really have anything until universal/inclusive!

163, yes i am very dim.

ledge, Thursday, 28 April 2022 15:20 (two years ago) link

I had 4 ???? words though which is some consolation.

Another weird one. Took me ages to get to green, then kind of lucked into the solution -was trying variations of “device”, “gadget”, randomly punched in “phone” which was a lower green, got it right after.

Best one in a while!

I solved Semantle #90 in 36 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 5.03. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #11. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 58.42 (991/1000).
the word that set me on the right track today was 'guitar'. Although it was the 3rd of my 7 greens, it was def the one which was crucial.

Grandpont Genie, Friday, 29 April 2022 08:15 (two years ago) link

100 guesses and still no greens.... this is going to take a while

joni mitchell jarre (anagram), Friday, 29 April 2022 08:21 (two years ago) link

got it in 98 after loads of greens (stereo, boombox, microphone), another day where i couldn't dislodge the obvious word from my brain. another four mystery words though - walkman, discman, ipod, hifi.

ledge, Friday, 29 April 2022 10:00 (two years ago) link

117 but I cheated and succumbed to the hint button because I was getting nowhere. Never doing that again it just totally ruins the whole game. I feel empty and worthless!

This one took me way longer than it should have.

Also feel like this took me longer than it should have, especially after the good green to start. Got loads of unusual words today, you can see the paths I was going down: autotune, arpeggiator, wifi, ringtone, boop (yeah, I don't know why I tried 'boop' either but I did also try 'beep' and 'bleep'), tremelo (oddly, this misspelling scored higher than the correct spelling I tried immediately after), bluetooth, dongle. Most enjoyable unusual word I can remember was from a few days ago, where it accepted 'shitstorm' as a valid but odd answer.

Slogged my way through 143 guesses before getting it. Once again, the game shows its bias towards sports, because I'd have thought the other meaning of the word would be more common.

Zelda Zonk, Saturday, 30 April 2022 02:00 (two years ago) link

I solved Semantle #91 in 178 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 10.89. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #103. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 12.65. https://semantle.novalis.org/

One of those ones when being a Brit and not following American football was a disadvantage.

100 more than yesterday! I think I was hindered by my first Green, 'yard', being a mere sliver of a green and one with multiple meanings. But yeah, once I twigged it was a sport one I cycled through a ton of related guesses.

Grandpont Genie, Saturday, 30 April 2022 08:41 (two years ago) link

I solved Semantle #91 in 267 guesses with 3 hints. My first guess had a similarity of 6.42. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #96. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 59.92 (997/1000).

It wasn't necessarily a sport one. I had 'vile' at guess #130 which is more or less a synonym of the target word, but I still didn't try the target word for another 140 guesses and 3 hints.

joni mitchell jarre (anagram), Saturday, 30 April 2022 12:21 (two years ago) link

77. highest green before I really got on the right track was game, also had football and when I started thinking about the american version I quickly got it.

I got campaign quite early which led me towards words of war.

my pc died this week so all my stats on this and wordle are gone, but at least my shameful use of the hint button is wiped off the slate as well.

i got #91 in 168 but after reading Dan Worsley's post, it took me only a few more guesses to get it I am American and grew up watching NFL on tv with my dad

I solved Semantle #91 in 221 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 14.90. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #73. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 18.53.

The sport angle didn't come until very late with blitz at guess 214 (and I was still thinking "war"). It was the dual lines of blitz/attack and vile/vulgar which finally got me there.

weatheringdaleson, Saturday, 30 April 2022 21:38 (two years ago) link

I solved Semantle #91 in 125 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 9.74. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #16. My penultimate guess had a similarity of -1.47. https://semantle.novalis.org/

i also never got the football angle, my answers were 100% about war and general violence. i guessed "sport" early on and abandoned the concept when it didn't hit. i think i have to stick with "ball" instead.
