every time alex reyes comes back it's like obi wan kenobi's ghost version. it's like hey, i see you there for a minute, and i love you, but goodbye

it appears the 2022 hicks era is already over

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 27 April 2022 00:36 (one year ago) link

saying that from a doomer perspective, but i'm just not accustomed to seeing hicks (or reyes) for more than a few weeks without total disaster

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 27 April 2022 00:37 (one year ago) link

Yeah the phrase “season-ending injury” is always hovering around both of them.

Met batters have been averaging 1 HBP per game this month, and after each one Showalter’s glower power grows.

only got into 335 games from 1992-1999, and even with that ended up with 41+ career fWAR

Michael F Gill, Saturday, 30 April 2022 02:35 (one year ago) link

crazy to remember that strawb was on the 114-win “best ever” yankees in 1998. such a completely different era. i just looked it up and he hit 24 home runs that year. the next year, his last, he didn’t play much, but hit .327 with a 1.112 OPS.

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 30 April 2022 09:58 (one year ago) link

I think it was 30 For 30 that did an episode about him and Gooden that I thought was really good. Explored their personalities and upbringings - and exposed a lot of the faults in the way teams treated their players (mentally/socially) at the time.

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 30 April 2022 14:52 (one year ago) link

Noticed that Tylor Megill and Alek Manoah, both in their second year (Megill's a little older), have very similar old-school lines right now:

Megill - 4-0, 1.93, 28 IP, 18 H, 6 BB, 27 K
Manoah - 4-0, 1.44, 25 IP, 15 H, 7 BB, 25 K

this game has been really, really funny

also, enjoying alonso make good on his vows to hurt people, lol! he's earned the right to hurt cardinals though - he almost got hit in the head AGAIN today

Great call by Mets booth too. What a rocket.

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 19 May 2022 21:03 (one year ago) link

I love the Mets booth. Always the best part about playing them. Like how they focused on how Pallante closed his eyes on that one delivery, noting that they never seen that before.

Not only would the cardinals crew never notice that, but...I mean. When Escobar made that error that tied the game in the 9th, Jimmy Edmonds said “that’s a big play right there.”

Bruce Stingbean (Karl Malone), Thursday, 19 May 2022 21:10 (one year ago) link

I wish I were paraphrasing

Bruce Stingbean (Karl Malone), Thursday, 19 May 2022 21:10 (one year ago) link

Every win is important right now because the starting pitching is going through some things.

PBKR, Thursday, 19 May 2022 22:58 (one year ago) link

Brings back some serious deja vu from last season, although the clutch hitting has been way better this year.

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 19 May 2022 23:34 (one year ago) link

that alonso walk-off HR was beautiful

na (NA), Friday, 20 May 2022 13:24 (one year ago) link

Need to find a gif of Alonso’s swing and subsequent beating of his chest.

Michael F Gill, Friday, 20 May 2022 14:39 (one year ago) link

This version of Alonso is fun.

PBKR, Tuesday, 24 May 2022 12:05 (one year ago) link

He is putting up MVP-type numbers so far, especially with OPS being down all year.

Funny to compare it to 2019, where he hit 53 HR, 120 RBIs, .941 OPS, and finished 7th in the MVP voting.

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 24 May 2022 14:19 (one year ago) link

This season/this team has been so much fun so far. Next month is going to be crucial (playing almost all 1st and 2nd place teams) and the injuries loom large, but it’s been a pretty perfect two months as far as results.

Michael F Gill, Monday, 30 May 2022 03:21 (one year ago) link

Met's offense reminding me of the 2015 Royals team they lost to in the WS. A lot of contact all up and down the lineup.

life is a highway to the danger zone (PBKR), Wednesday, 1 June 2022 11:24 (one year ago) link

What's going on with Guillorme? He's hitting .360/.455/.908 in 86 AB.

life is a highway to the danger zone (PBKR), Wednesday, 1 June 2022 22:30 (one year ago) link

It’s impressive. This is the first time he’s really had any sort of consistent playing time since he came up in 2018. He could be a late bloomer offensively a la McNeil. He does fit well in this new look Mets offense which seems to focus on putting the ball into play as opposed to launch angle / power.

remember that brief golden moment when it seemed like dom smith had finally figured it out?

me neither

mookieproof, Saturday, 23 July 2022 16:54 (one year ago) link

His 2020 was pretty incredible. They retroactively said he was playing with an injury in 2021, but his 2022 has been worse. JD Davis, who is in a similar season-long malaise, has had some great moments/clutch hits this season, where Dom has just looked lost. A trade may actually help him out in that he would get regular playing time and start fresh.

The team defense is so solid, especially compared to recent years.

30 games over .500!

Deadline pickups have been very good so far. Edwin Diaz has had a magical last two months. It feels like Showalter and Scherzer have shifted the clubhouse culture this year way more than anyone expected. There is a lot of chemistry on this team.

Michael F Gill, Sunday, 7 August 2022 02:31 (one year ago) link

truly love putting on a squeeze play up four runs in the bottom of the eighth

mookieproof, Sunday, 7 August 2022 03:01 (one year ago) link

I know starting pitching is a 5 inning affair these days, but the Mets have been wearing out starting pitching lately.

doomposting is the new composting (PBKR), Sunday, 7 August 2022 23:18 (one year ago) link

They were saying Mets batters see the most pitches in the first inning. They do make pitchers grind it out.

Love taking 4 out of 5 from the Braves.

mookieproof, Monday, 8 August 2022 00:21 (one year ago) link

Braves’ starters worked a total of only 24 innings in the five games, as the Mets knocked them out early.

Topic of conversation today on Bill James's site: who is the oldest living Met? It's not someone famous--Dave Hillman, turns 95 in September.

With Marte out, Buck has put Alonso in the two hole when the Mets have been facing lefties lately.

Can’t imagine making your MLB debut in the biggest series of the year when you are 20 years old.
