The ashtray says you were POLLED all night...

I wonder why we listen to POLLS when nobody gives a fuck...

His POLL in life was to be an echo.

Let's disco dance, Hammurabi! (Austin), Saturday, 23 April 2022 15:05 (one year ago) link

Meanwhile, post-Daft Punk, I'll cobble together a Broadcast thread by Sunday evening (GMT+10)

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Saturday, 23 April 2022 23:00 (one year ago) link

OK, I will give a Tweedy/Wilco poll a go when the Broadcast one is complete, unless there's someone else who has been waiting.

Thinking three polls:
Side Projects Albums (all members?)
Wilco Albums
All Tracks (Tweedy as songwriter)

Thoughts?

Indexed, Sunday, 24 April 2022 14:45 (one year ago) link

Thoughts?

Mine:
Wilco Songs(as it will dominate anyways)
Other/Side Projects/Solo Songs
Albums

Bee OK, Sunday, 24 April 2022 21:39 (one year ago) link

Though "Side Projects Albums (all members?)" is an interesting concept too.

Bee OK, Sunday, 24 April 2022 21:44 (one year ago) link

Yeah, I just deleted a post campaigning for a non-Tweedy side project, but this isn't the place for that. Anyway, I'd have at least one thing to include, in that respect.

there's some edge cases where it's a little hard draw the line, like loose fur's "laminated cat" started out as a wilco song and is still played live regularly by wilco in its loose fur form

Come On Let's POLL - ILM Artist Poll #114 - BROADCAST (Polling and Lobbying Thread)

It's customary to paste a link in a more timely fashion, but it seemed vaguely impolite to interrupt active Wilco discussion :)

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Sunday, 8 May 2022 02:11 (one year ago) link

People who have made poll images in the past, can you recommend any free/simple apps or websites that work on PC?

GIMP.

Star Trek: Strange New Wordles (Leee), Monday, 9 May 2022 17:03 (one year ago) link

tried that before but seems to be a bit too much of a learning curve for me (gimpin' ain't easy) - and don't know if my ancient laptop can handle it.

This is probably a horrifying suggestion to actual designers, but I always find powerpoint is very easy to use to create cover/image art. You can add pics, shapes, text, etc in all manner of colors and fonts. When done, just highlight the entire field of items, right click, and select save as picture.

Indexed, Monday, 9 May 2022 17:38 (one year ago) link

That actually could be just what I need.

three weeks pass...

who's next after broadcast

i would like to try to do the 2010s poll sometime in the next few months, at last, but i'll have to coordinate that with moka if they're still onboard, and with anyone else who wants to help

ufo, Tuesday, 31 May 2022 01:27 (one year ago) link

Yeah I’m on board!

TEARS IN THE TYPING POLL: ILM Artist Poll #114 - BROADCAST (Results Thread)

This is officially no longer any sort of impediment, so go go go

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Saturday, 4 June 2022 04:16 (one year ago) link

So into a 2010s poll! Don't know what help you need, ufo, but definitely want to if I can

Vinnie, Saturday, 4 June 2022 04:21 (one year ago) link

if anyone's ready to run a poll right now, feel free to start & i'll be ready to start the 2010s poll when you're done, otherwise i'll hopefully be ready to start it it sometime in the next week.

i've ilxmailed you Moka, if that's the best way to contact you. i'll let people know if there's any more help needed

ufo, Saturday, 4 June 2022 05:37 (one year ago) link

sorry is there a better way to contact you moka?

two months pass...

"I would have voted if I'd known about it,"

Obviously a tale as old as time, but having seen a number of people voice this sentiment in the decade poll (and having missed the 2021 tracks and albums polls myself) I wonder if there's some way to make poll threads (or at least their deadlines) stand out somehow.

peace, man, Friday, 26 August 2022 13:44 (one year ago) link

A moderator could put up a site admin message, but the one time I suggested that it got loud disapproval, probably rightly so.

DPRK in Cincinnati (WmC), Friday, 26 August 2022 14:36 (one year ago) link

Yeah, that's along the lines of what I was thinking, but I can see the problems with it as well. Maybe just a separate page, like the Admin Log, but a Poll Log, with columns just being: Poll Title, Submission Deadline, Rollout Dates.

peace, man, Friday, 26 August 2022 14:57 (one year ago) link

I would have voted, but was trying to improve the quality of the results

the board could really use a pinned threads feature

one option is putting deadlines in the thread titles but they always inevitably get extended which would require chasing mods to edit the title etc.

ufo, Friday, 26 August 2022 16:14 (one year ago) link

The NOMINATIONS & then VOTING thread for the 2010s poll were fairly constantly near the top of Site New Answers for a good few weeks so it seemed pretty hard to miss

groovypanda, Sunday, 28 August 2022 08:08 (one year ago) link

I definitely noticed it this time, but other people in the thread still missed it somehow.

On the other hand, I had been anticipating the 2021 EOY poll voting thread (which had about half as many posts as the 2010s voting thread) and it just never crossed my screen. I eventually went searching for it and found that the voting deadline had passed.

peace, man, Sunday, 28 August 2022 22:43 (one year ago) link

EOY schedule is the same every year (nominations close early January, voting ends 2-3 weeks later) - you can set a reminder already!

#115 is all yours Indexed as I don't see anyone else ready to do a poll at this time. I will also vote in a Wilco poll.

nate woolls, Tuesday, 30 August 2022 22:23 (one year ago) link

Are there best practices on tabulating results captured someplace? Or someone with experience who could answer some questions or share a google sheet with me?

I had planned to just give 1 point to the lowest ranking track/album and the number of tracks/albums to the highest ranking track/album. e.g., in a 5 album poll, 5 points. Is this standard? I am struggling to back into the math used in some of the prior polls but it seems like higher point values were assigned. Not sure if that would make a difference mathematically though.

I also don't totally know how to handle partial ballots. In the above example, if someone only lists 3 albums, would you assign those albums 5, 4, and 3 points, OR 3, 2, and 1 point? Or something else?

Thanks!

Indexed, Tuesday, 6 September 2022 15:09 (one year ago) link

5, 4, and 3 in the latter case

Vance Vance Devolution (sic), Tuesday, 6 September 2022 16:54 (one year ago) link

here is that original doc: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-6UZjUc-eioPify1wTOMXe_dSsjOQ6pBu0ZjT0I7CCQ/edit#gid=0

I have always used that formula but added 10 point so number one would always get 50 points: 50, 36, 33, 30, 28, 26, 25, 24...You might need to start at 60 since this is a 40 track ballot.

Number ones always get the same score regardless of how many are submitted.

I have also done both, the same above scoring for albums and the simple 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 scoring but yeah all number ones got the 5 in that case.

Hope this helps.
