Sault - What's the story?

Not into this at all. Fitting that Pitchfork finally gave them a BNM for this.

Lol, I don’t follow pitchfork actively but this is somewhat hilarious. It’s the only Sault album I wouldn’t recommend to someone as an introduction to them… hopefully most people reading pitchfork were already familiar with them.

It feels like a consolation prize. “Hey sorry we slept on this project’s amazing run of albums in the past years, here’s a BNM to make up for it”

They did review two others…

Untitled albums got reviewed like 7 months after they came out - possibly for reader’s eoy lists? It was a strange move to release a review so many months later… no idea the reasoning behind it - And neither got BNM.

I so would like to at least, see Cleo perform live sometime. I keep checking her website but to no avail. sadface

Luos Higher made me think of Biophilia (Moon / Solstice) and is the track that stood out for me

Cleo was amazing on Tuesday. Such a talent and clearly so humbled to be in front of such a big crowd. Lost for words. Just left me imagining what a Sault concert could be like.

She played with a band and strings section, they were pretty tight! Some of the songs she did acapella with her backing singers.

It’s labelled as an EP on itunes but it’s actually one 10min track. That said it’s not really a 10 min song, it’s actually different songs with the same vocalist - no idea who this is, it’s a reggae guest artist that hadn’t been used on any SAULT song previously afaik.

First track (or section if you will) is a funk-reggae fusion, second one is a piano ballad that has some cool 70’s aor prog choir arrangements towards the end, third segment is a spoken word interlude, fourth one is a soulful chill tune.

I think it could count as an EP, wish it was actually spliced into 4 tracks instead of a single one. Specially because I’m not a fan of spoken word segments and will probably find myself skipping that section.

Hoping an actual album comes out and these get spliced then, but knowing SAULT this is probably the full release; an EP of 4 tracks joint without explanation, take it or leave it

It’s a pretty cool trio of songs imho, Inflo nails different 70’s production styles and having a reggae singer on top of them makes a very original contrast. I don’t think I’ve ever heard reggae singers on things that sound like idk Emerson Lake and Palmer.

considering that they teased 10 on twitter & peterson said there's an album coming, i would expect there's probably an album too (just maybe not today?), but you never know with them

yeah seriously. I wish they'd at least included the earlier Inflo-produced Chronixx track(+dub) too, esp annoying since his at-one-point forthcoming album seems to have been scrapped

Yeah I’d bet on this being the full release.

Hope this isn’t the m.o. for future releases. If they want to release a bunch of ep’s in this format and a compilation it’d be ideal, the un-spliced tracks drive me crazy on streaming though. Makes these tracks very much useless for playlists. It doesn’t seem they mind too much for streaming either way seeing how they removed 9 apparently permanently.
