ah shit let me correct

nashwan, Wednesday, 20 April 2022 22:08 (two years ago) link

Paul Williams worked with the duo at Henson Recording Studios, the former studio of A&M Records where he had worked previously, including his compositions for Jim Henson's films featuring the Muppets, such as "Rainbow Connection". He also stated that the song he penned was to be sung from the point of view of an unidentified first person, setting the emotion, but the lyrics came from the music itself. Paul Williams said that he felt vulnerable while writing the record, and said he writes best when he is allowed to be honest and vulnerable, a situation that Daft Punk nurtured. He also stated that his sobriety added a sense of wonder to the song he wrote, as every day for him being sober has been wonderful compared to his prior life of excess.

so the reason i went to Top 60 is because i truly believe this poll needed to highlight these songs...

― Bee OK, Wednesday, April 20, 2022

Of the entries so far I only voted for High Fidelity and Motherboard, but these are all pretty great. Hadn't heard several of them before.

Motherboard is one of the more restrained tracks on RAM

Went for a different Le Knight Club track than the two that have shown up. Their music is understated and repetitive in a way I don’t entirely get

Dan S, Wednesday, 20 April 2022 23:45 (two years ago) link

Interesting results today. I had no idea how well the RAM tracks would do, but I thought Touch would be higher.

I should have probably voted for Derezzed. I remember hearing it for the first time and being blown away. I also remember the disappointment at hearing the rest of the Tron soundtrack a few weeks later.

Probably would have voted for Robot Rock if it had been two minutes shorter. It suffers the same problem I have with most of that album.

I've not heard many of their remixes although recently I did hear their remix of Franz Ferdinand's Take Me Out at work Which they obviously spent only a few minutes on.

definitely a great idea to open up the poll to any/all Bangalter/de H-C tracks. hurrah and thanks to Bee and nashwan!

beepy fridges (sic), Thursday, 21 April 2022 01:29 (two years ago) link

voted for "Call On Me" very high (the Together version is so so good, totally superior to Eric Prydz's later rip of it), "Mirage", "Nightcall" and "Too Long / Steam Machine". despite the name of "Too Long / Steam Machine" it's based more around the synth line from Bronski Beat's "Smalltown Boy" than any Daft Punk track, it's distinctly its own thing

none of their remixes really stood out to me at all when putting together my ballot

ufo, Thursday, 21 April 2022 01:55 (two years ago) link

I did draw the line at voting on live LP mash-ups.

I thought I would too, but I just couldn't help voting for the encore, which is so thrilling, especially if you saw the live show.

I should have probably voted for Derezzed. I remember hearing it for the first time and being blown away. I also remember the disappointment at hearing the rest of the Tron soundtrack a few weeks later.

I voted for it... I remember listening to it over and over again when it was released in advance of the soundtrack and film.

Spinal Scratch is great, so I'm happy to see that others voted for it. Of all the things I relistened to while preparing to vote, that's the one that I just couldn't stop playing. I hadn't listened to it in probably 15 years or more. Still have the 12" from way back when.

Hans Holbein (Chinchilla Volapük), Thursday, 21 April 2022 02:55 (two years ago) link

a fair few of the Alive 2007 tracks were distinct enough and so clearly superior to the studio versions that I happily voted for them

Just catching up on a few of the tracks I didn't know before and this is fantastic.

Random Access Memories songs that have placed (so far):

Motherboard
Touch
Contact
Within

not the songs you think of in regards to Random Access Memories.

Bee OK, Thursday, 21 April 2022 04:24 (two years ago) link

Figure the more well-known stuff is to come. Some of the artist polls end up working out that way, where the lower reaches are filled with album tracks

Vinnie, Thursday, 21 April 2022 07:51 (two years ago) link

Spinal Scratch was #8 on my ballot and thought it would be higher as it's probably the best solo Bangalter track

Chord Memory was my #3, my favourite DP remix and so many good memories around that track.

Also appears to be a spoiler in Bee's post above lol

groovypanda, Thursday, 21 April 2022 09:11 (two years ago) link

did not know about the Eric Prydz connection

kinda cool, kinda hilarious

track is a jam

corrs unplugged, Thursday, 21 April 2022 10:09 (two years ago) link

saddened at the sudden realisation that if Bee OK had gone with a top 40 then Life Is Sweet and Chord Memory wouldn't have shown up on a poll of Daft Punk's best tracks

ignore the blue line (or something), Thursday, 21 April 2022 11:20 (two years ago) link

"Touch" might have been my one RAM vote. Paul Williams was a great "get" for what they were trying to accomplish.

Max Hamburgers (Eric H.), Thursday, 21 April 2022 13:12 (two years ago) link

Great poll so far. I’m on vacation with my family otherwise I’d be posting more.

Daftendirekt was one of my only Homework votes. I’ve never fully locked in with that album (tho the videos help make the case for it TBH, so thanks for posting them in this poll).

That said, I will never forget the moment when I first heard Daftendirekt and the beat dropped in a completely different place w/r/t the opening sample than I was expecting. I’ve never been able to recreate that feeling re-listening to it but I remember it so vividly I couldn’t help but vote for it.

Naive Teen Idol, Thursday, 21 April 2022 13:35 (two years ago) link

Motherboard is wonderful, and Omar Hakim’s performance is unbelievable. I always hear its sublimely melancholy arpeggio coda propelled by Hakim as Daft Punk’s requiem for genre formerly known as post rock. And I will always be here for it.
