Not into this at all. Fitting that Pitchfork finally gave them a BNM for this.

Lol, I don’t follow pitchfork actively but this is somewhat hilarious. It’s the only Sault album I wouldn’t recommend to someone as an introduction to them… hopefully most people reading pitchfork were already familiar with them.

It feels like a consolation prize. “Hey sorry we slept on this project’s amazing run of albums in the past years, here’s a BNM to make up for it”

They did review two others…

begrudgingly bound by duty of candor (morrisp), Friday, 22 April 2022 06:18 (two years ago) link

Untitled albums got reviewed like 7 months after they came out - possibly for reader’s eoy lists? It was a strange move to release a review so many months later… no idea the reasoning behind it - And neither got BNM.

'Barry' on HBO used "Foot On Necks" as the over-credits track on the newest episode. Hope a lot of people Shazam'ed them...

three weeks pass...

Cleo was amazing on Tuesday. Such a talent and clearly so humbled to be in front of such a big crowd. Lost for words. Just left me imagining what a Sault concert could be like.

mmmm, Friday, 10 June 2022 20:51 (one year ago) link

Very cool. Does she play with a band, or recorded tracks?

Soundslike, Friday, 10 June 2022 21:06 (one year ago) link

live album available next week.

She played with a band and strings section, they were pretty tight! Some of the songs she did acapella with her backing singers.

new Inflo production sounding great, esp the dub - Chronixx - Never Give Up

vinyl seems to be only via Sounds Of The Universe. Currently out of stock but they seem to be adding more copies regularly.

stirmonster, Friday, 8 July 2022 15:53 (one year ago) link

oh lol I had no idea that was an Inflo production, though it's crystal clear in retrospect. Also didn't know there was a dub--seen that anywhere streamable online other than the SoU site?

rob, Friday, 8 July 2022 16:00 (one year ago) link

kind of funny that this is the most reverently retro sounding thing Chronixx has ever done

rob, Friday, 8 July 2022 16:02 (one year ago) link

i think the dub may be vinyl only, at least for now.

stirmonster, Friday, 8 July 2022 16:06 (one year ago) link

ah that's a shame, the sample sounded nice

Per here, album due out today (includes the four-part track "Angel" at around 13:20 in):

Soundslike, Monday, 10 October 2022 04:45 (one year ago) link

looks like it's just the 10-minute single "angel" that's out today, no 10 album yet

ufo, Monday, 10 October 2022 04:49 (one year ago) link

Ah, darn. Peterson says album, but don't know for sure he's right...

Soundslike, Monday, 10 October 2022 04:56 (one year ago) link

who knows with them, maybe it'll be out later or just not on streaming

ufo, Monday, 10 October 2022 05:01 (one year ago) link

Listening now.

It’s labelled as an EP on itunes but it’s actually one 10min track. That said it’s not really a 10 min song, it’s actually different songs with the same vocalist - no idea who this is, it’s a reggae guest artist that hadn’t been used on any SAULT song previously afaik.

First track (or section if you will) is a funk-reggae fusion, second one is a piano ballad that has some cool 70’s aor prog choir arrangements towards the end, third segment is a spoken word interlude, fourth one is a soulful chill tune.

I think it could count as an EP, wish it was actually spliced into 4 tracks instead of a single one. Specially because I’m not a fan of spoken word segments and will probably find myself skipping that section.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 10 October 2022 05:12 (one year ago) link

the guest is chronixx

ufo, Monday, 10 October 2022 05:15 (one year ago) link

Hoping an actual album comes out and these get spliced then, but knowing SAULT this is probably the full release; an EP of 4 tracks joint without explanation, take it or leave it

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 10 October 2022 05:16 (one year ago) link

the guest is chronixx

― ufo

Oh cool!

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 10 October 2022 05:17 (one year ago) link

It’s a pretty cool trio of songs imho, Inflo nails different 70’s production styles and having a reggae singer on top of them makes a very original contrast. I don’t think I’ve ever heard reggae singers on things that sound like idk Emerson Lake and Palmer.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 10 October 2022 05:23 (one year ago) link

considering that they teased 10 on twitter & peterson said there's an album coming, i would expect there's probably an album too (just maybe not today?), but you never know with them

ufo, Monday, 10 October 2022 05:26 (one year ago) link

There's a full album coming but it's all pearl jam covers

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Monday, 10 October 2022 06:09 (one year ago) link

I'd hoped they would do more with Chronixx after working on his recent single, which was stellar. The first part of this in particular is really doing it for me.

stirmonster, Monday, 10 October 2022 12:35 (one year ago) link

£7 for a 10 minute 'album' though.

stirmonster, Monday, 10 October 2022 15:58 (one year ago) link

We're convinced "Angel" is the entirety of 'X'? Where are you seeing it for sale? (Not on BC at this moment...)

Soundslike, Monday, 10 October 2022 16:13 (one year ago) link

Oh, nevermind. Must've just gone up.

Strange pricing, given they'd done previous full albums at that price (or even "name your own price' I think for some).

Soundslike, Monday, 10 October 2022 16:15 (one year ago) link

I'm sure "Angel" is the entirety of 'X' too.

Even more on itunes etc.

stirmonster, Monday, 10 October 2022 16:22 (one year ago) link

£7 for a 10 minute 'album' though.

― stirmonster, Monday, October 10, 2022 11:58 AM (one hour ago)

yeah seriously. I wish they'd at least included the earlier Inflo-produced Chronixx track(+dub) too, esp annoying since his at-one-point forthcoming album seems to have been scrapped

rob, Monday, 10 October 2022 17:05 (one year ago) link

I will never buy this, that's a ridiculous price
