I am terrified* to have never even heard of UYD and that there are over NINE HUNDRED episodes. Is there a podcast version of 'it gets *really* good in season 9!' or do I just start at the beginning?

*Terrified because my FOMO is positively crackling with the thought of how many other great podcasts am I missing out on?

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Thursday, 14 April 2022 19:33 (two years ago) link

A lot of the older UYD episodes are not on podcast platforms. You could probably just start with recent episodes and see if you want to want to check out the backlog.

A few years ago they switched from 1 episode a week to 2, and it's been hard for me to keep up

this is my only UYD exposure and they're incredible but there haven't been many new ones in the intervening decade, I don't know if this is a regular part of the pod

uhhh yeah dude is the one podcast I never really tire of. Kind of crazy that I have spent over 500 hours listening to these two dudes talking.

I think you can just start anywhere with it and you don't have to listen to every episode. It does get better as you get to know the hosts but it's not one of those comedy podcasts where there are a bunch of inscrutable inside jokes or a bunch of mini-narratives you have to keep up with.

silverfish, Friday, 15 April 2022 17:08 (two years ago) link

their chemistry & genuine affection for each other as friends is the soul of the show & the reason for the longevity.
Seth’s curation of material, knowing exactly what will get Jonathan spun up or what will set them both off

there’s nothing else like it because it’s not a comedy podcast - it’s a ~friendship~ podcast

I have an allergy to podcasts that consist of two or more dudes sitting around laughing at their own jokes.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 15 April 2022 17:24 (two years ago) link

I was going for a hike and parked my car in a dirt lot near the mountain. The only other car in the lot had a UYD bumper sticker. For the whole hike I was hoping to bump into someone else so I could yell Seatbelts

me too and i totally wrote them off for a good long time. even then not everyone will like it and that’s fine. i eventually couldn’t handle that heavy a dose of jonathan so i laid off for awhile but i like to dip back in. they do have something special between them.

in my own quest for podcast-like material (lectures, monologues, or other spoken word stuff to listen to while working or cleaning), and just yesterday in the course of tracking down some joe frank programs from the '80s, it occurred to me that there might be an interest for a catch-all thread for word / quasi-spoken word stuff that maybe doesn't qualify as a podcast? wherein people could post interesting youtube videos and soundcloud links? maybe we have it already, or maybe it's sprinkled in with this and other podcast threads. just a thought.

I think a couple things were mentioned in the Joe Frank thread? S/D: Joe Frank

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 16 April 2022 08:08 (two years ago) link

"fiction or non-fiction" -- I often enjoy things that are somewhere in between. I used to love listening to Joe Frank before podcasts were a thing, which I guess was mostly fiction but had this feeling of reality/surreality to it.

― longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, April 14, 2022 7:37 PM (two days ago)

I think definitely try out Within the Wires. Also, people here might enjoy Apocalypse Songs, which is a horror in the 'documentary' mode based on a fictional outsider musician.

A non-horror audio drama I really loved is It Makes A Sound. A woman obsessed with the music of an old schoolmate and devoted to restoring it to the world.

Budo jero, sounds like a good idea for a thread to me.

What is the current state of being able to listen to Joe Frank online? Is there still some aniquated mp3 paid download site or something?

Really enjoying Oh Brother the Hanley borthers' Fall Podcast. Wish there was more of it ,. But it is still coming out quite regularly so great.

Kate Lister's one on sex through History is quite good too. Betwixt The Sheets. I had just attended a webinar on the launch of her latest book Harlots, Whores & Hackabouts last week where she talked about Enkidu and the priestess of Ishatar on a day taht I happened to be going to a talk on Gilgamesh later. Now I find she has a weekly podcast out.

Red Nation indigenous American weekly show on various topics. I find it really interesting. Perspectives I wouldn't have otherwise.

Guilty Feminist. Might be a little middle class but is pretty inclusive, she has a lot of black and other minority guests . Is openly pro gay/bi/trans etc. & has covered some very interesting subjects. Have been listening to her frequently for the last few years. Not sure when I picked up on the show. Mainly a vehicle for Deborah Frances-White a standup comedian who is originally fro Australia plus whoever she is around with this week, mainly Alison Spittle an Irish comedian and a few others including a a weekly turnover of guests.
I find it intelligent for the most part, has some assumptions i don't 100% agree with but does challenge itself quite a bit.

Daily Beans/Mueller She Wrote
AG etc giving their take on teh news. Can be a little more gung ho than I would like. Seems not to question US foreign policy over theh years quite enough .
But I enjoy it

My Momma Told Me
weekly podcast on black old wives tales etc or is it conspiracy theories . Mainly folk thought etc rather than something really involved but the kind of idea one gets told by your mother/elder as though it is the gospel truth but tends to be myth science or whatever.
Very funny, I think. Mainly has black guests on and laughs at white pretension and some aspects of black experience.
It gets a 2nd shorter weekly mini episode these days too.

That Record Got Me High
weekly show on people's personal experiences with records . Has covered a lot of really interesting stuff. Including the Cramps first lp last week .
& things Like Rocket from The Tombs With a guesting Cheetah Chrome and a few other things along those lines over the years.
I have been slipping behind with this show and keep missing episodes but when i do catch one i tend to enjoy it quite heavily.
had to put the Cramps one on when I saw it. Very worth looking through the archive anyway.

Backlisted
I think this is already cited on this thread several times and does tend to be quite engaging. I think the remit is trying to explore lesser known books that should be more widely known. I managed to catch the live show that tied in with the Arts Festival here last Autumn was there as a volunteer .
Had somehow had the podcast name slip my mind when i signed up for it then found out that I had listened to a few beforehand.

Better Read than Dead
A US Marxist version of a similar idea. Has covered some very interesting books which I later read possibly because tehy had been covered in this. Schuyler's Black No More was one i think.

Yo! Is This Racist
comedy show looking into the tropes of what constitutes racism etc. Mainly focuses on a voicemail phone in service where a listener asks if a situation they have just experienced or witnessed is actually racist or not.Followed by a closer examination by the presenters.
ONe of these is a middle classed Asian American and the other is the actress who plays the central character in Star Trek Lower Decks among other things.

Worst Year Ever
examination of current affairs by the same team taht do Behind tHe Bastards which I also listen to frequently.

Some More News
a similar news examination through humour podcast. Presenters can be pretty obnoxious but I find it pretty interesting.

Chris hayes
I listen to his MSNBC show through podcast after trying to download the tv show for a few years and finding it took way too long. Also more occasionally listen to Rachel Maddow this way.

We're NOt So Different
Husband and wife team present a podcast with a series i'm trying to listen through on Historical materialism. They are far left and looking at societal structure over the ages,. I think I just got up to Charlemagne with them

I enjoy the Daily Beans quite a bit.

Have you listened to Deep State Radio? The host, David Rothkopf, has been on the Beans at least once, probably more. It's very informative. Also like Talking Feds, which has a similar vibe but more mainstream with better-known guests.

I’ve been enjoying “What Is Politics?” and “Fight Like An Animal” lately, both leftist shows that deal with a lot of materialist anthropology and psychology.

Thrilled to see the return of ‘Sam Pancake Presents the Monday Afternoon Movie,” which is a highly entertaining, addictive podcast dedicated to the oft neglected and dismissed genre of the TV movie. Each episode features Sam and a guest poring over a different movie, usually from the ‘70s or ‘80s, most of which can be watched on YouTube. The theme of the new season is teenager problems and it just kicked off with ‘Sarah T., Portrait of a Teenage Alcoholic’ (1975), with guest Sarah Thyre, who is the absolute perfect guest for that movie.

I have been enjoying the Undr the Cosh podcasts of late, just dipped into a few, more or less at random. Matthew Kilgallon, Kevin Campbell, and Mark Crossley's are all good, in different ways. On Geoff Horsfield's at the moment. Everyone seems to be from Barnsley

xp

It was a mention on here that made me check that out. It's brilliant, like James Burke's Connections for popular music.

Noel Emits, Wednesday, 20 July 2022 08:16 (one year ago) link

I just listened to the start of the History of Rock in 500 Songs on Light My Fire and the presenter has just had a big build up tying Jim's dad into the start of the Vietnam War. So that's like cool and stuff.
Wonder if many made the link at the time or would that bit about his dad have been a secret until later.

Quentin Tarantino has a brand new podcast in which he picks movies from his personal VHS collection and discusses them with his cohost Roger Avary (the co-storywriter of Pulp Fiction). It's called "The Video Archives Podcast," named after the Manhattan Beach, CA video rental store Tarantino and Avary worked at in the '80s. All of the VHS tapes in question are in fact from the stock of the store, which ended up in Tarantino's possession.

One episode up so far, which was pretty good/promising. If you've heard QT's episodes on the "Pure Cinema Podcast" you will be familiar with his rhetorical style.

Josefa, Thursday, 21 July 2022 15:38 (one year ago) link

I almost wish I had a long commute situation at the moment just to get deep into '500 songs...'
