man i really think that song is boring as hell - i was being a bit fatalistic on the r&b thread/jukebox but i do think it's a really below average song - don't see how the production is really at all noteworthy

cool showy synth textures, rhythm constantly shifting between triplets and straight 4/4, a big dramatic outro that sounds completely different from the rest of the song -- ymmv, but it has a lot going for it that is 'noteworthy' in the context of the stuff it's being played between on R&B radio.

Fell under the spell of "Imma Star" and grabbed the album. I agree that a lot of it is really samey, but I'm loving "My Sunshine" right now. "Runway" is pretty awes too.

who is the 'k. james' credited on bday sex and imma star?

goole, Friday, 31 July 2009 04:55 (fourteen years ago) link

"Imma Star" is fabulous, the album is pretty good on first listen. Consistently lovely-sounding.

Tim F, Saturday, 1 August 2009 00:56 (fourteen years ago) link

raindrops is fucking amazing....like unbelievably good. buh bye is pretty great too.

J0rdan OTM, "Imma Star" is so so boring. Y'all are fucking insane!

the last minute or so of "imma star" is really good, it's basically mid-level dream but that's cool w/ me. ship, when you're lauding its "outro" are you talking about that or the strings @ the end?

the rest of the song is bland as fuck, tho

You know the really awesome thing about "Birthday Sex" that no one ever talks about is those Aretha "aahhhhr-OOTS!" that pop up during the bridge. Somehow all the retro-soulers have left it to a teenager to bring back that one.

k. k3ller & public admin log (The Reverend), Monday, 3 August 2009 02:04 (fourteen years ago) link

the bridge is great - the drum rolls coming up to the "aahhhr-OOTS!" part are awz too

some dude, Monday, 3 August 2009 02:17 (fourteen years ago) link

Is this "up-tempo" mix of "Birthday Sex" at the end of the album the shitty technoid version yall were complaining about? It is kinda :'(

Album isn't as bad as yall are making out. Not on a Dream/E Red level, but I like it on a Ciara/Foxx level.

k. k3ller & public admin log (The Reverend), Monday, 3 August 2009 02:32 (fourteen years ago) link

most of the posts about the album seemed pretty positive to me?

I dunno, seemed most ppl were pretty indifferent.

yah I love "Imma Star" and the video, but didn't really dig "Birthday Sex" or hear anything else off it. "Starting All Over" sounds good.

damn "Break Up" is catchy as fuck

murda mo not mo murda (some dude), Friday, 18 September 2009 02:22 (fourteen years ago) link

basically i like all the songs on the album - i can see how people might hear it as generic, or (staaaans) terius-jocking, or repetitive, but i guess what it comes down to is i like the kid jeremih a lot (andy k compares him to saadiq in his amg review - otm!!) and you really get the feeling this is exactly what he and the schulz guy always wanted to make; there's real charm and talent in the attention to detail they've put in to what is pretty much the most 2009 record you will ever hear that even when it's on something i wouldnt normally be mad for like the gaga-goth europop on 'runway' it still draws me into their shit cos it's somehow just theirs and theirs alone, i dunno.

r|t|c, Friday, 18 September 2009 02:27 (fourteen years ago) link

nearly embarked on a schulz - peanuts folly there BUT I DIDNT

r|t|c, Friday, 18 September 2009 02:28 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah listening to those last couple songs I heard a little bit of a certain high joyful tone I identify most w/ Saadiq and (dare I say it) Stevie Wonder -- always annoyed me when people referred to "Birthday Sex" as being somehow post-Dream when if anything it's just yet another guy with a high voice who's similarly post-R.

murda mo not mo murda (some dude), Friday, 18 September 2009 02:41 (fourteen years ago) link

like ok, 'jumpin' there is on the face of it like every lame ron browz wannabe banger you expect to come across - but tell me that's wack, with that rollercoaster chorus and all? shit is riveting imo.

ha i didnt dare say stevie either! that breakdown on 'starting all over' in partic is just pure class for a hundred reasons: i'm saying hacks is the last thing these guys are.

the thing about post-dream/post-r is that yeah (musico)logically of course it's post-r because that's what the-dream is. but yknow, not playing dollshouse or anything but i could well imagine terius being more of an issue in these guy's minds as they were making it. in any case however it's wayyyy more interesting as post-dream just because of the delicious irony of 'birthday sex' in its mystic obviousness actually being a genuine international solo hit: time will wash this irritation from the history books but never, i bet, from terius' very psyche. (or so i like to imagine.)

I was listening to Sly & the Family Stone's "Stand!" as I read that and heard it in my brain as:

this album is mad generic and samey, I can name 5, maybe 10 better male r&b albums this year. it's not bad but it's not worth getting all hyped over, tho I do like Jeremih's personality

The Brainwasher, Friday, 18 September 2009 18:33 (fourteen years ago) link

it's one of those albums that you listen to a few times w/o paying much attention and then realize that nothing on it is bad and you love it.

goole, Friday, 18 September 2009 18:34 (fourteen years ago) link

have y'all heard Pleasure P's album? Trey Songz (album & mixtape)? J. Holiday?... cuz all of their albums are way better than this.

The Brainwasher, Friday, 18 September 2009 18:36 (fourteen years ago) link

maiayayayayayayayayayayai haus!

i haven't heard Pleasure P but i support him as his name sounds like some fictional they'd have in like a Lethal Weapon type movie in the late 80s, perhaps played by damon wayans

scared of gaucho (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 18 September 2009 18:37 (fourteen years ago) link

BTW the best song on this album is "My Sunshine" the uplifting ray of sunlight over a funeral scene fade out into end credits ballad. Check it.

Tim F, Saturday, 19 September 2009 23:59 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't know about uplifting but i think you're right about funeral scene - "how could someone just take your soul so fast / and now youre gone"? and "if i could hold you again" might be a standard line but once i realised you could hear the chorus as having a double meaning............. :(

incidentally the abrupt switch in tone from that song into "...bet you'll fall in love with my ride!" is my favourite cackle of 09 i think.

r|t|c, Tuesday, 22 September 2009 21:38 (fourteen years ago) link

brainwasher i take the point those other albums might be being underrated here (especially pleasure p's) but wtf man ur trippin so, so hard if you think you're gonna make that point on the basis of them not being as "generic and samey" as the jeremih
