gloria sounds SO GOOD

I still like disco

Also, this might be better on an Underworld thread, but one of my favorite things is that you can, using remixes/alternate mixes, re-imagine the self-tilted Kylie Minogue album to sound way more like dubnobasswithmyheadman than you'd ever expect. Thanks Brothers in Rhythm.

Confide in Me (Big Brothers mix)
Where Is the Feeling (BIR Dolphin Mix)
Surrender (Talking Soul Mix)
Where Has The Love Gone? (Fire Island Mix)
Falling (Original Mix)

this Infinite Disco live album is incredible

ok i need to hear that.

i'm very late to kylie beyond a few big singles. does anyone want to rep a few of their favorite house remixes? there have to be a few, right? i can't find anything obvious on the music purchasing sites i frequent and i don't have the attention span to comb through discogs.

it’s not really house and I’m not sure if this is in your wheelhouse but one of my favorites tracks of the 00s is the Fisherspooner remix of “Come into my world”:

impossible princess vinyl reissue is out and sounds pretty dope. Its rep as an alt-rock album is probably slightly overstated, there’s also a fair amount of trip-hop and glistening dance-pop on here. Those rock songs tho they really don’t hide the presence of manic street preachers; ‘i don’t need anyone’ especially sounds very much like a lost cut from

everything must go
. i think it’s very much in line with other unexpected detours of that decade and one that’s one of the more successful. ‘some kind of bliss’ and ‘breathe’ remain in the top tier of her career

as mentioned upthread

infinite disco
is absolutely great, it feels almost like a definitive statement in some ways. also the extended mixes version of
disco
improves on the original. there are so many versions of that album.

side note met a guy awhile back who had interacted w/kylie and he reported that out of all the celebs he’s dealt with she was just the best, super kind and chill.

Not the first time I've heard something like this. I think it was Simon Price who said she was one of the nicest celebrities he'd ever interviewed. Kylie and Phil Oakey.

Really enjoying the vinyl reissue of Impossible Princess. It sounds great. Nice to see it improving on its original chart placing and now becoming a top five album in the UK.

this is one of the most endearing, likeable things I've ever watched - it doesn't surprise me her personal reputation is so high

boxedjoy, Monday, 31 October 2022 11:11 (one year ago) link

I saw the Robbie one a while ago and was surprised that I liked the format a lot. Good for an interviewee to use as signposts to talk about relatively niche aspects of certain eras.

That was great. So touching to see her get so emotional talking about Glastonbury at the end there.

Wasn’t aware of these, not being a fashion icon, however will need to check these out. Though can’t imagine anyone being as charming as Kylie.

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 18 May 2023 14:09 (eleven months ago) link

Love this. Kylie really knows how to deliver a lead single.

I love how her new eras still feel like an event after all this time.

kitchen person, Thursday, 18 May 2023 14:30 (eleven months ago) link

Her albums are imo typically so strong that I'm confident about this one. I need to revisit kiss me once and golden, because while those albums did have some highlights I felt at the time they weren't quite up to par with everything she's released from the 94 self-titled onward.

omar little, Thursday, 18 May 2023 14:59 (eleven months ago) link

I could use a little less pitch-shifting / vocal manipulation but I like the new single. Already want a Bollywood style remix with strings to accentuate the chorus even more.

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 18 May 2023 16:07 (eleven months ago) link

oh fuck yeah. that electro-edm-r3hab thing sounds good on her.

would love it if she made the charts here. i do feel like her kate bush moment has gotta arrive at some point stateside, there are just too many killer songs in her back catalog and potentially more to come.

omar little, Thursday, 18 May 2023 17:30 (eleven months ago) link

"Say Something" topped my '20 singles list -- what a blast of enthusiasm during peak COVID quarter! But in a rare thing I didn't much at all for the album (I played Róisín Murphy's to death though).

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 18 May 2023 17:33 (eleven months ago) link

i had a dream a while ago that the kate bush thing happened with 'locomotion', there were zoomers on a see-saw on tik tok.

xp i still get a little choked up by some of the stuff on disco, "i can't stop writing songs about you" in particular

it's gonna be another roisin / kylie year!!!

ꙮ (map), Thursday, 18 May 2023 17:37 (eleven months ago) link

i'm telling you, infinite disco is a *killer* album. think the disco extended mixes album might edge out the original slightly, though i still stick w/listening to the OG release since that's the one i physically possess.

omar little, Thursday, 18 May 2023 17:40 (eleven months ago) link

The only tracks that I've had any genuine affection for on each Kylie album since Aphrodite have been their respective lead singles. "Say Something" in particular I just adored; I distinctly remember being brought to tears all of a sudden when watching the Infinite Disco version, which may have in part been a side effect of lockdown-induced mania.

This one feels slightly undercooked (I would like another rehash of the chorus at the end) and all in all is giving me Rita Ora x Imanbek or a lost Inna single. But the sound seems TikTok-friendly to me, so it wouldn't surprise me if it does end up doing something in the charts in the UK at least.

monotony, Friday, 19 May 2023 01:25 (eleven months ago) link

feels like it could use an extended mix or another section besides the verse/chorus—2:45 is too short, and that does give it a kind of undercooked feel.

Michael F Gill, Friday, 19 May 2023 01:41 (eleven months ago) link

i agree it's a little undercooked. the vocal production is also just odd - beyond whatever manipulation is going on it just sits in a weird place in the mix?

i still really like "dance floor darling" from disco

ufo, Friday, 19 May 2023 01:47 (eleven months ago) link

yeah I think the vocal production doesn’t let her personality/warmth seep through as much as it could, it’s a bit cold and robotic/robo-tuned. but i could live with it if there was a middle 8 or if the outro was extended into a longer instrumental section.

Michael F Gill, Friday, 19 May 2023 01:59 (eleven months ago) link

have we seen the video yet? it's just chefs kiss. i roared when she's getting the updraft of air on the junker car. it's soooooooo awesome.
