I sing Don Henley's "New York Minute" to the title track, unfortunately.

More like 5, not 10:

My Friends
Scar Tissue
Under the Bridde
Warped
The Zephyr Song

"Warped" is so good.

I wish Duran Duran had sounded like "Warped" in 1995.

I always thought the Klinghoffer albums were way better than anyone expected them to be. Nothing amazing happens but it's solid, consistently tuneful altrock. This is probably my favorite RHCP song:

One Hot Minute has Aeroplane on it, which means by definition it isn’t good

castanuts (DJP), Wednesday, 30 March 2022 00:33 (two years ago) link

RHCP mistakes:

1. Kiedis trying to sing like a normal singer
2. Hiring Dave Navarro

any album with "one big mob" and "transcending" on it is by definition good

I LOVE "Aeroplane", my favorite single of theirs after "Scar Tissue" and maybe "Under the Bridge"

I don't know the name of the song, but on a podcast I heard someone play a mid-'00s RHCP song that was clearly a Strokes ripoff, it was pretty striking.

final ranking with a slight boost for californication bc i think i'm being unfair to it just bc the classic singles are all victims of overplay for me and i can barely hear them anymore:

one hot minute
blood sugar sex magik
by the way
freaky styley
mother's milk
i'm with you
stadium arcadium
californication
the uplift mofo party plan
unlimited love
the getaway
red hot chili peppers

surprised i prefer i'm with you to the getaway but i'm not a huge fan of the muffled danger mouse production sound, it's the least they've ever sounded like a band (also surprised i prefer rubin's absolute non-production, at least on the later records). if i'm with you and i'm beside you were spliced so that only the best tracks remained and it ran less than 50 minutes, it would be the best rhcp record

my favorite red hot chili peppers song of all time is "warm tape"

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 31 March 2022 14:06 (two years ago) link

ok on brief revisit i’m really underrating uplift mofo party plan there

I remember ‘Uplift Mofo Party Plan’ as a big disappointment bc it lacked a good single and I felt the psychedelic stuff was an awkward addition to the sound. It just wasn’t the huge leap forward I expected. (‘Mother’s Milk’ kind of was that). Knowing now that it was the only album from the original lineup makes we want to re-listen.

Josefa, Friday, 1 April 2022 04:32 (two years ago) link

i think it's the first album on which they managed to write real songs, it's also just really fun

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 1 April 2022 04:34 (two years ago) link

also i assume this has been tested and it didn't work, but i just feel like if you played the bob dylan cover for a boomer they would die instantly

I actually saw them on the ‘Uplift Mofo’ tour. Last one with Hillel Slovak

the sodomsky review of the new one is pretty accurate (he and i approach this band from a very similar position, given his excellent sunday review of to record only water for ten days), i'd give it a slightly higher rating, plus it sounds better every time i put it on, but it really is like they decided to pretend it was the day after they recorded stadium arcadium and just started from there

it brings me no pleasure to report that "white braids & pillow chair" is totally gorgeous in inverse proportion to how embarrassing the title is

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 1 April 2022 14:26 (two years ago) link

fell so hard for i'm with you and its b-sides in the last week that i made a composite version of the record with the best b-sides included. i still couldn't get it beneath an hour lol. but here it is:

1. monarchy of roses
2. factory of faith
3. brendan's death song
4. long progression
5. how it ends
6. never is a long time
7. police station
8. victorian machinery
9. did i let you know
10. hanalei
11. goodbye hooray
12. in love dying
13. meet me at the corner

Tbh I find them literally unlistenable for the most part, but I'm weirdly fascinated by them as people and I will probably listen to all these interviews that Rick Rubin is doing with the members on his podcast.

I am listening to this thing: it is I suppose somewhat odd (?) or is it very typical (?) for these guys who consider themselves such avant-ass, out there artists to make music that seems so ordinary, or at least ordinary via the standards of radio friendly modern rock of 1999-2002…in particular Frusciante has done rather a lot of challenging shit on his own, but when he comes back to the band, his contributions are without any flair whatsover… where's the Neu influence, where's the Brandy influence? Why can't anyone hear that? Or perhaps he thinks that RHCP's place is to be basic, or maybe the other two tell him, despite their rep, that this is high stakes, no risk shit that's intended to command the attention of the middle aged modern rock audience, and so he tries and succeeds to write basic modern rock… the proper analog is Eagles or Aerosmith; those guys don't walk around acting like they're Helios Creed, they act like they're making big budget rock music…

Fles: Geez Anthony, I'm wounded by Nick Cave's comment…

Anthony: Yeah, he's our peer, why doesn't he see how adventurous we are?

Frusc: Yeah, it's not like he's the Durutti Column, but I like the Birthday Party OK…

Chad: Who's Nick Cave?

i guess i know where you’re coming from but there are literally john martyn whale sounds in “not the one”

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Sunday, 3 April 2022 17:58 (two years ago) link

I did check out a few of the new tracks due to how Sodomsky talked about Frusciante's guitar work, and it's like... yeah, these 5-second solos are slightly "elevated" by the standards of typical KROQ fare, but that's about it(?) I dunno, I just don't hear it.

ass time permits (morrisp), Sunday, 3 April 2022 18:24 (two years ago) link

(but then I also don’t enjoy F’s solo stuff, I guess he’s just not for me)

ass time permits (morrisp), Sunday, 3 April 2022 18:35 (two years ago) link

I think that's what they do though: take something that used to be cool then totally corporatize and whitewash it for mass consumption. Make questionable and nonsensical innuendoes everywhere, have a guitarist with tons of cred and yeah: this fucken garbage rocks????

New album is pretty bad. Too new to properly assess, but I haven't disliked anything of theirs this much since One Hot Minute.

Let's disco dance, Hammurabi! (Austin), Sunday, 3 April 2022 18:36 (two years ago) link

it's easy to miss imo bc he's a tasteful underplayer; his personality mainly asserts itself in forms like the liquid run of notes he does in the chorus of "whatchu thinkin'," i don't know of another player who can be so oceanic and spectral while also playing counterpoint to a musician like flea. navarro and klinghoffer def weren't, navarro was more like this alt-metal storm and klinghoffer played like a radio dial stuck between two very different classic rock stations

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Sunday, 3 April 2022 18:47 (two years ago) link

Sorry . . . rereading my previous response, it comes off very snide. Not how I meant it at all.

Just very repulsed by this new record. I mean wow— people thought music in the late 80s was too processed and overproduced???? Makes sense that's when these guys rose to prominence.

Ugh, sorry. I'm doing it again. But jeez, this album isn't very good.

Also Brad otm: JF is an asset to any band he's playing in.

Let's disco dance, Hammurabi! (Austin), Sunday, 3 April 2022 18:49 (two years ago) link

also: i love frusciante as a songwriter, his imprint is unmistakable, and from what i can tell the remaining chili peppers love playing with him because songs just sort of form in the air when they're jamming; but the reason i like this band is that it's way less about one guitarist for me than how they all mesh together as musicians
