old-time hockey

Leon Draisaitl is the first NHL player to have a hat trick and a plus-minus of -4 or worse in the same game since Toronto's John Anderson on January 12, 1983.

vezina should be based on highlight reel not stats

since we're sharing, this captain kirk impression has to be up there as well

that was going wide

red wings have allowed nine goals on 27 shots

mookieproof, Sunday, 27 March 2022 23:19 (two years ago) link

I have faith in the team Yzerman is building but I doubt Blashill can take that team anywhere

last night, maybe the goofiest goal i've ever seen:

lol wow, tage thompson's stick breaks, shot bounces off the boards, off the goalie and in. 6-5 PPG #LetsGoBuffalo #Blackhawks pic.twitter.com/P2hBu2EAKK

Pretty brutal way for Chicago to lose with 12 seconds to go. Pretty sure most goalies would have that same reaction.

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 29 March 2022 21:18 (two years ago) link

I cackled loudly @ the hawks when I saw that result, ngl

same. it's fun watching them lose

I know college hockey gets little love here but I went to Minnesota for grad school and this is good

auston matthews: pretty good

mookieproof, Friday, 8 April 2022 02:55 (two years ago) link

Basically nothing else has gone right in the game since then, lol

athletic article on eugene melnyk ($) is really something

mookieproof, Thursday, 14 April 2022 18:36 (two years ago) link

RIP Mike Bossy - probably my all-time fave player, and maybe the best pure goal scorer ever. If injuries didnā€™t end his career after ten years, he could have ended up with more than Gretzky.

Michael F Gill, Friday, 15 April 2022 19:23 (two years ago) link

it was the 80s, and he played on fantastic teams, and he didn't get a chance to drag down his average by playing past his prime, but . . . *averaging* 57 goals a season is incredible

mookieproof, Friday, 15 April 2022 21:37 (two years ago) link

Holy shit, that's quite the stat.

we only steal from the greatest books (PBKR), Friday, 15 April 2022 22:34 (two years ago) link

His 1980-81 run of 50 goals in the first 50 games seems especially otherworldly. It was a different time.

Michael F Gill, Friday, 15 April 2022 22:36 (two years ago) link

extra love for the right-handed shooters

not you, ovi

RIP Guy Lafleur

man.

mookieproof, Friday, 22 April 2022 15:11 (two years ago) link

RIP, did not know he was battling cancer for three years.

Michael F Gill, Friday, 22 April 2022 15:32 (two years ago) link

I was still watching hockey in the mid-late '70s. Those Montreal teams that won the five consecutive Cups were awesome.

clemenza, Friday, 22 April 2022 15:41 (two years ago) link

dang. i just started watching hockey around the time he came out of retirement and he was still pretty great then. RIP, The Flower.

i agree with the comment about the montreal teams. the CBC segment on lafleur was nice. i wish they would've gotten someone besides ron, though

Punster McPunisher, Saturday, 23 April 2022 15:45 (two years ago) link

It's hard comparing across sports, so I don't know how they'd compare to the Russell Celtics, Jordan Bulls, Ruth-Gehrig Yankees, Brady Patriots, etc. But I remember them as so much better than everyone, and a perfectly balanced team: goaltending and defense, scoring, very deep.

clemenza, Saturday, 23 April 2022 16:14 (two years ago) link

The '76-77 team:

https://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/MTL/1977.html

- 60-8-12
- 12-2 in the playoffs (beating the Bruins and Islanders, dominant teams on either side of their Cups)
- a goalie with a 2.14 GAA
- a guy with 60 goals, another with 56, six others who scored 20+ (a benchmark at the time)
- 9 HOF'ers? Possible that one or two got in primarily because they were on this team
- Scott Bowman as coach (so 10 HOF'ers)

clemenza, Saturday, 23 April 2022 16:21 (two years ago) link

i have no idea why this was called a goal

Hey, we'll take it šŸ˜

Ref explanation: "After review, the puck was already shot before the play was whistled down. Therefore, it was a continuous motion. We have a goal on the ice." pic.twitter.com/dr2rsTD44R

vegas still alive but basically needs a miracle

mookieproof, Wednesday, 27 April 2022 03:33 (two years ago) link

Had not heard of the Starsā€™ Jason Robertson before and it turns out he has 40 goals this season. Huh.

Going to throw my fandom behind the Oilers and Panthers in the playoffs.

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 27 April 2022 03:46 (two years ago) link

penguins are cratering at just the right time

kinda hope the caps pass them simply because i'd rather see them brutalized in the first round by the panthers than the rangers (1996 notwithstanding)

that said, the first round is going to have so many amazing matchups -- TOR-TB! MIN-STL! CAR-BOS! -- and i desperately hope we get BATTLE OF ALBERTA in round two

mookieproof, Thursday, 28 April 2022 01:06 (two years ago) link

I watched less hockey this year than since I started watching hockey.

we only steal from the greatest books (PBKR), Thursday, 28 April 2022 01:09 (two years ago) link

these playoffs, then, are for you, a person with no particular rooting interests other than to see certain eastern conference teams crash and burn. it's gonna be good hockey

i mean, watching the playoffs when your team is in it is basically torture even when your best player doesn't have a fucked-up thumb

mookieproof, Thursday, 28 April 2022 02:29 (two years ago) link

^ totally agree with all that

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 28 April 2022 03:21 (two years ago) link

rip vegas

kinda rough losing three straight key games in the shootout, but also: lol

mookieproof, Thursday, 28 April 2022 05:22 (two years ago) link

couldn't score one shootout goal, in seventeen tries

symsymsym, Thursday, 28 April 2022 06:36 (two years ago) link

panthers just cursed themselves by winning the presidentā€™s trophy

mookieproof, Friday, 29 April 2022 04:25 (two years ago) link

they get to raise a banner though

Expect #NHL teams to inquire about hiring Joel Quenneville as their Head Coach. Hear he wants back behind the bench and there is expected to be significant interest in hiring the future Hall of Famer. Q will need to meet with Commissioner Gary Bettman to be reinstated.

— Andy Strickland (@andystrickland) May 1, 2022

do not want

$5 says vegas hires him

mookieproof, Sunday, 1 May 2022 17:45 (two years ago) link

Flyers. They'll literally ditch a coach with cancer if they think it will help them win.
