Is the covers thing retroactive? If you've previously uploaded a cover, do you now have to remove it unless you have the artist's permission?

Hmm, if you read the changelog at the end of the terms of use page, it seems nothing much has changed. The covers thing was already there.

joni mitchell jarre (anagram), Thursday, 24 March 2022 08:21 (two years ago) link

I don't understand the covers thing. You don't have to get permission to cover a song as long as you pay royalties to the songwriter.

This differs wildly depending on where you are. It appears that in the USA you need to get a license from the rights holder, whereas in Australia you just need to register it with AMCOS so that the royalties can be collected.
It's very weird and confusing and something I suspect is frequently ignored.

one month passes...

Anyway we have Bandcamp Friday in two days and as I'm apparently now the king of Bandcamp I'm here to help.

This may be inappropriate to ask, but do they give you credits of some kind or do you have to buy everything yourself?

There are people i follow who seem to purchase an astonishing amount, and it's not like they're trading in VG+ Steely Dan LPs for exchange

Yeah, the article def does not ask the burning question of how Raggett stays so caked up

Totally fair question. I've never received anything like that from Bandcamp itself, just the payments for my freelance writing and I of course do whatever with that. There's a small clutch of promo releases I've received download codes over time that are part of the collection but we are talking, say, a couple of hundred releases at most. Otherwise the rest of it, I'm just purchasing away.

Very nice interview Ned.

honestly stoked that Ned has answered a question i have long wondered about! good on ya for supporting artists, etc.

Home Normal guy(s?) back from japan. have a couple of their earlier releases, mainly for the Isan tracks, but i like their aesthetic and this is for charity

KING! OF! BANDCAMP!
I'm so glad you exist, Ned, so that there's at least one person who buys (much) more than I do.

raven, Friday, 6 May 2022 12:41 (one year ago) link

From a running list, Bandcamp Friday buys this afternoon: The Aluminum Group - new s/t, Sigur Ros' first Liminal sleep release, Caroline Loveglow - Strawberry, some back catalog Film School, Lucid Express, Flyying Colours, The Bathers' new non-album comp, Pjusk, and probably something spur of the moment.

lol I considered starting a "bump this thread when you see Ned's face on a bandcamp page" thread a while ago and it hadn't even occurred to me this would be a universal BC experience. Shufl looks pretty great, already overwhelmed by the African stringed instrument guide

EAST's discography is on sale for €17.66, which is 85% off. As far as I can tell, this is Seraphim Rytm under different guises. A bunch of E.P. and small compilations.

I also noticed Delerium released remasters of their old work, and bundled it, for $70. Though I am only really familiar with the Spheres albums and Syrophenikan, just skipping around it sounds like there are some more gems.

Speaking of spotting Ned, I have a copy of this I bought a bit impulsively at CommendNYC's recent popup. It's like twee-pop ambient with great sound design, but the kiddie vocals are a bit too cloying for my tastes, wondering what others think. I'll probably let go of my copy (the LTD version) at some point. TBH it really is lovely stuff overall; I am giving it a chance to sink in more.

yeah that didn't take long.

Let's disco dance, Hammurabi! (Austin), Wednesday, 11 May 2022 01:52 (one year ago) link

Well they'd been going back and forth on that for a while, honestly. The whole idea was to try and bridge things over until shows were back to 'normal' but then again who knows when that'll be!

What'll be obnoxious is if they ditch the Juneteenth fundraiser. (Which, I should note, I have not heard they're going to do.)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 11 May 2022 02:31 (one year ago) link

a fair insight, ned. thank you for the reminder.

would also be bummed to see other normal/semi-normal "fundraisers" become less normal/not there. that's like, the reason to mess with bandcamp tbw.

Let's disco dance, Hammurabi! (Austin), Wednesday, 11 May 2022 03:23 (one year ago) link

I wouldn't be surprised if they extended them for awhile, but yeah, it's been clear for awhile that they don't want to make Bandcamp Fridays permanent.

change display name (Jordan), Wednesday, 11 May 2022 03:35 (one year ago) link

True, but in this case it's clear they don't care about the optics either.

assert (matttkkkk), Wednesday, 11 May 2022 03:41 (one year ago) link

did they say that's the last one? i haven't seen them say that.

they announced Feb, March, April and May, and that's the last word i've seen on it. and that's in line with what they've been doing for 18 months ... basically announcing a handful as they go.

Any number of thinkpieces recently have covered how its bad to have a single day all your promo and releases are based around, so its good for both artists and bandcamp that this is going away.

If you dont want Epic to mess with something it's bought, keep it as profitable as possible, and a single day which gets all the sales but make the platform no money is not sustainable.

dont get me wrong, Seeing the titles fly across the screen on the first Bandcamp friday as people were going crazy, was a joyous experience in the early months of covid.

Preorder for the new Ghostkeeper just dropped. This is my Album of the Year so far, just a delight. Indigenous indie rock with influences from Otis Redding to Can to Pavement. Much hookier than their previous albums. https://ghostkeeper.bandcamp.com

Via email, just now:

On Friday, June 17th, from midnight to midnight Pacific Time, we’ll hold our third annual Juneteenth fundraiser, where we donate 100% of our share of sales to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, a racial justice organization with a long history of effectively enacting change through litigation, advocacy, and public education.

Bandcamp Fridays will resume on September 2nd, and continue on October 7th, November 4th, and December 2nd.

A little while ago I'm sure that I saw a bandcamp daily blurb for a compilation of experimental/noise/electronic type stuff from Peru, but now I can't find it. Anyone know what I'm looking for?

linked it on one of those post time travel threads i think

nxd, Friday, 3 June 2022 14:14 (one year ago) link

only thing I hate about Bandcamp is new releases aren't set to "auto-release", they only become available when the band flips a switch, so if you pre-order say the new Kreator, and it's still 10:15 am ET and it's still showing as pre-order cos nobody has flipped the switch, I get ANTSY WAITING.

most bands are quicker than this, they're over in Germany so it's mid-afternoon, c'mon!

Gymnopédie Pablo (Neanderthal), Friday, 3 June 2022 14:18 (one year ago) link

Thanks, nxd - it actually wasn't that, it was a comp of stuff from the '80s, but it was released by the same label so I found it from that page!
