Semantle: Can you think like a covid-19?

celebrating ten years of constant posting (breastcrawl), Thursday, 17 March 2022 11:05 (two years ago) link

I solved Semantle #47 in 74 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 20.22. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #27. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 32.46 (902/1000). https://semantle.novalis.org/

Came in from view and opinion so had to flip it around a bit.

surrendered today, had greens of 993, 996, 997 but could not crack it

I solved Semantle #47 in 77 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 0.99. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #53. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 25.92 (416/1000). https://semantle.novalis.org/

Came in from concentrate -> focus -> target, thankfully I missed any philosophy-related words or I might have been stuck guessing completely irrelevant stuff for ages.

I solved Semantle #47 in 401 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 5.81. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #25. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 14.33. https://semantle.novalis.org/

That was ugly, but I didn't want to give up. And, yep, got caught in a philosophy related rabbit hole for far too long.

started this after midnight and was aimlessly going through synonyms of success. I cracked it this morning in a more computer like state of mind.

Ok could have been worse - got very stuck in teaching/telling words before making a leap to making words - once again, I have to remember not to get too fixated on the first green

lemmy incaution (emsworth), Friday, 18 March 2022 00:29 (two years ago) link

A hell of a lot more long-winded than it needed to be, but got it in 134. My way in: work (in the mid-greens) - employ - utilize - deploy - install - create - construct - build - FOUND!

Starting to get more of a feel what the guesses mean - a high cold/low green may be helpful in terms of whether it's an object or abstract concept you're after, and whether it's a noun/verb/adjective/adverb. Mid greens may give you a very general feel for the area, but it's only when you get into the 980s that you're really getting a clearer idea of what it is. And even then...

I solved Semantle #49 in 252 guesses.
My first guess had a similarity of 10.46.
My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #10 with “flower” and guess #11 got me as high as 657 with “garden”. Than “bulb”>”tuber”>”herb” (989! at #125!). Tried all kinds of gardening and food/cooking stuff, got lots and lots of greens (fittingly!), but was only thinking of the edibles (!) themselves and forgot about the utensils, until I tried “pan”, which turned out to be…my penultimate guess - it had a similarity of 37.06 (928/1000).

Have to say, although it was my worst score ever, I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Don’t think I’d ever gone beyond 150 guesses without giving up, but it was fun (rather than frustrating) just to keep the greens coming (I racked up 53 in the end, got me real hungry!) in the knowledge that it was probably going to be the most basic word imaginable (I had seen there were quite a number of low scores).
Seeing the list with closest words made it even more fun. To think that “rhubarb” was the closest non-drugs-related word!

celebrating ten years of constant posting (breastcrawl), Saturday, 19 March 2022 11:02 (two years ago) link

Solved in 122, bit of a weird one, took me a while to get to herb, various varieties of which were all high greens, took a detour through houseplants and I could have got it from there, instead I went 'herb... cannabis!'

I'm not sure how I got there how I did. soup was my closest and I had barely any greens.

first green was herb & then took a while to guess marijuana & then had a real block thinking of synonyms of that lol

I solved Semantle #49 in 85 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 17.10. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #35. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 23.63. https://semantle.novalis.org/

Lol, my path was: DRUG scored high but not in the green, HERB was the first green so I thought "oh, so it's not actually drugs" and tried a bunch of actual herbs, then MARIJUANA hit super-high -> "oh shit, it *was* drugs after all" -> tried every synonym and a bunch of other drug-related terms until *finally* I came up with the right one. Was surprised it was that one as I would've thought cooking-related terms would be much higher than drug-related terms in that case.

I also really have a bad case of "think of every synonym except the right one" for all of these games.

Pimantel #25 was a bad and awful experience for me. my 77th guess (and first in the top thousand) was "barrel" (15/1000). by my 110th guess I'd convinced myself that the secret word must have something to do with oil, so I racked up a bunch of high ranking words like "hydrocarbon" (56/1000), "refinery" (26/1000), and "crude" (9/1000 ffs) until it occurred to me to try "barrels". I generally only go for plurals when I'm frustrated and feel like mashing some keys with little expectation off success. I think I'd prefer it if plurals were excluded from the secret word pool, though I guess that would compromise the robotic purity of the exercise
