this album starts off like it vibes and chills but give it a minute - track 3 is maybe peak 'rocks':

i like this Irish band called Sprints, doing the talk-sing post-punk thing but with a lot more emphasis on the punk than most of these bands: https://sprintsmusic.bandcamp.com/album/a-modern-job

On 1st listen, I'm actually liking the 3rd Secret song, featuring Krist Novoselic, Matt Cameron, Kim Thayil, and Bubba Dupree with two female vocalists (Jillian Raye and Jennifer Johnson). A bit Heron Oblivion.

This Generacion Suicida performance gets me, such a great mix of punk, HC, gothy bits and just looking badass.

I’ve been listening to this pretty much daily since reading your post. Hands down one of my favorites of ‘22.

great to hear! it's a keeper, for sure

the 90s-ness of Milly and Momma is really something to behold. i was familiar with tony molina so his 90s-ness is less striking.

Perhaps more specifically Chicago 1994.

I might be wrong but I believe a member from each of those bands (Momma and Milly) plays on this:

lotta discourse out there about the chat pile album. i'm here with the firm stance that ... it is good

na (NA), Thursday, 4 August 2022 16:16 (one year ago) link

i like how embarrassingly direct and emotional a lot of the lyrics are, it comes across as distasteful when most music is too tasteful, though this seems to be the sticking point for a lot of listeners (specifically the song "why")

na (NA), Thursday, 4 August 2022 16:18 (one year ago) link

it reminds me a bit of harvey milk

adore the chat pile record

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 4 August 2022 18:25 (one year ago) link

feels like if an anthology of short horror comics took form as a sludge metal album

drum production is very shitty in a good way

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 4 August 2022 18:27 (one year ago) link

fun and fucked up in equal measure, v difficult balance to maintain

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 4 August 2022 18:35 (one year ago) link

I love it, too, and for me “Why” is the stand out track. I love how direct the lyrics are. The words are so perfectly chosen and delivered.

beard papa, Thursday, 4 August 2022 21:08 (one year ago) link

Still waiting for my copy to get here, just got caught up with the comp of their two EPs. It's set my expectations for the full-length very high, "Rainbow Meat" is like the platonic ideal of my favorite kind of noise rock song, completely unhinged and off-putting but also deeply hilarious.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 4 August 2022 21:10 (one year ago) link

Somewhere between Scratch Acid, Pissed Jeans and S/T era Daughters is where Chat Pile sits for me. They do simple but powerful so well. “Why” is just the latest example but “Crawlspace” hit me in a similar way. Really great band.

gman59, Friday, 5 August 2022 06:25 (one year ago) link

i love the killdozer/laughing hyenas era butch viggish production, everything sounds so textured and tactile.

adam, Friday, 5 August 2022 11:11 (one year ago) link

xp - Yeah "Crawlspace" is a great track too.

Current favorite is "grimace_smoking_weed.jpeg"

billstevejim, Saturday, 6 August 2022 04:10 (one year ago) link

Thanks for the tip on Momma slightly upthread. That nails a certain 90s vibe better than just about anything I've heard. Love the newest album.

doomposting is the new composting (PBKR), Monday, 8 August 2022 12:09 (one year ago) link

Yeah, that Momma track is truly uncanny in how anachronistic it feels. Though the production is maybe a bit more 2020s hi-fi. Also one hell of an earworm, been stuck in my head for days.

feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Thursday, 11 August 2022 17:02 (one year ago) link

grimace_smoking_weed.jpeg is fantastic but really haunting. also, good call on the Killdozer/vig production comparison. Still a bit surprised they have been getting so much more love than say the Bummer album from last year or pretty much every Pissed Jeans record, but I'm glad. Might also be timing, people being ground down, wanting some authentic noise and angry punk

Not from 2022 but new to me - I've really been digging this Japanese group the Cabs, like very tight 90s-informed math rock with both pretty melodic singing and screaming over it; distinctive melodies.

I think these guys have been mentioned in the metal threads a few times, but not so much metal as Stooges-inspired proto-punk so I'm bringing 'em up here again. Ecstatic Vision has a new live album out and it absolutely slays, just ferocious stuff:

They do, indeed, I hope to catch them live one of these days. I was already a fan, but this live album just slays so hard.

ahh heavy psych records.
the new home to the lords of altamont.
also, love how every digital album release : 6.66 euros

mark e, Wednesday, 19 April 2023 19:09 (eleven months ago) link

Yeah Heavy Psych puts out some decent stuff, but I reallllllly wish they'd get some good US distribution. Forced Exposure puts out some of their stuff, but not all, and often way after it comes out officially. Their shipping costs are pretty high ($10 for a $14 CD) and when they do show up in a shop, they are frequently priced nearly at old import level prices.
