got #44 in 18 guesses after a lucky green at guess no. 3

kinder, Monday, 14 March 2022 18:05 (two years ago) link

I solved Semantle #45 in 81 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 11.28. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #6. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 10.20. https://semantle.novalis.org/

mostly lost today but a few of my mid greens arc & arch led me to the word

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 15 March 2022 00:19 (two years ago) link

#45 -- back to my old slow self at 143 guesses -- i had the same two mid greens johnny did but also terms i associated with baseball and still am unclear why those are close to the word except for maybe the fact that there are probably a lot of articles about sports in the dataset used to determine proximity

sarahell, Tuesday, 15 March 2022 00:28 (two years ago) link

#45 took me 104. Got bogged down with blank - emptiness - cosmos - universe - galaxy, as one does.

I solved Semantle #45 in 67 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 17.71. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #19. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 4.70. https://semantle.novalis.org/

Once again, took longer than usual cause I’d already guessed a different version of the word earlier.

But I’m happy to back under 100 guesses! Yesterday’s was brutal for me.

Roz, Tuesday, 15 March 2022 02:23 (two years ago) link

The worst I've ever done. 150 in without a green.

Zelda Zonk, Tuesday, 15 March 2022 03:05 (two years ago) link

Gave up, after getting a couple of greens that were of no help. I did guess 'square', which you'd think would be high up in the greens, but it was cold.

Zelda Zonk, Tuesday, 15 March 2022 03:51 (two years ago) link

like if yr green guesses were field, blue, sky, infield, ball, fence, arc, arch, plus pitch, dugout, and crowd around 19% ...

sarahell, Tuesday, 15 March 2022 04:22 (two years ago) link

idk what do the rest of you think about it seeming like sports terms are often closer to the word than you would think if you were just thinking about words

I solved Semantle #45 in 82 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of -1.26. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #9. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 10.70.

I was thinking about planets and the cosmos and was going along a moon, universe, orb route to cracking it

calzino, Tuesday, 15 March 2022 06:52 (two years ago) link

my first high but non-green was "dancing" so that was my route: pirouetting, twirling, spinning, whirling before making the jump to adjacent words

Roz, Tuesday, 15 March 2022 08:12 (two years ago) link

got there eventually but that was my worst ever score

forgive myself for not seeing a path through my first greens - lamp, sky, blue, neat, heaven and - at 973! - crease?!

lemmy incaution (emsworth), Tuesday, 15 March 2022 08:55 (two years ago) link

I solved Semantle #45 in 80 guesses.
My first guess had a similarity of 5.18. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #39.
My penultimate guess had a similarity of 25.97.

first green was garden after "flower" got quite high. lots of fence/ boundary related guesses after that

i think my brain is slowly adjusting to moving to the right sort of tangents - at times.

kinder, Tuesday, 15 March 2022 09:07 (two years ago) link

Got it in 124, this game is perverse. Why universe, galaxy, sky, moon but not planet, star, satellite, sun? Why triangle and rectangle but not square? Why arc but not curve? Why not shape or round?

this was a slog, only got it with the help of a thesaurus.

joni mitchell jarre (anagram), Tuesday, 15 March 2022 10:37 (two years ago) link

37 today, not too bad considering it took 29 to hit green

I only had two not particularly high greens moon and orbit, tried several more space-related terms without success, then hit the word from there. Weird one for me.

Ahahahahahahaaaaa. It's a semi-regular starting guess for me, for some reason. But I don't like getting them too quick, it takes all the fun out of the game.

One of the worst played so far. Why is "front" at #796? Why are "blue", "sky" and "bracket" in the top 1000?

Nhex, Tuesday, 15 March 2022 14:29 (two years ago) link

189 guesses and still plugging away. I have 8 greens and a few that seemed to be promising paths, but only hitting dead ends so far.

Lately I've been bailing at around 100 guesses if I'm in the middle of the green with no improvement. Rarely do I see the answer and think 'oh I would have gotten there eventually'. I'm impressed by you all.

Because it's not about synonyms, it's about words that you are most likely to find in a newspaper article where the target word also features.

yeah and not just common sports terms but arcane ones like 'deking' and 'carom', wtf.

I tapped out at around 350 guesses, just wasn't getting there. Somewhat kicking myself now though.

nxd, Tuesday, 15 March 2022 17:22 (two years ago) link

I solved Semantle #45 in 89 guesses.
My first guess had a similarity of 15.30.
My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #51 with “field” (709). And then, around guess #77, I realized, “hey, there’s a sports opening here!”, and I was most of the way there, because half of the time there’s a sports connection, right? Still, I plucked the target word out of thin air really. Good for me, I guess, after two consecutive non-finishes.

celebrating ten years of constant posting (breastcrawl), Tuesday, 15 March 2022 17:28 (two years ago) link

funny how everyone today is grumbling about the disproportionately big sports bias in the target words

I solved Semantle #45 in 147 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 8.85. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #65. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 27.53 (711/1000).

so many contexts to today's word, so not surprised it took me a while. My 1st green was 'pond', and rather than think "they are often round" I reeled off a list of things found in parks and gardens and finally hit on 'pyramid' which led me on to the various shapes.

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 15 March 2022 19:23 (two years ago) link

before i started guessing words related to sports i had gotten sky, blue and field so i had a bunch of guesses related to painting then i started on parks/outdoor recreation areas

sarahell, Tuesday, 15 March 2022 19:51 (two years ago) link

Having failed miserably on the last one, I got #46 in a mere 17 guesses, having hit a high green on my third guess. Having looked at the list of greens, I think most people are going to find this one easier than yesterday's

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 16 March 2022 00:08 (two years ago) link

omg

199 guesses

The big key guesses, in order of closeness, were: monologue -> harmony -> descant (?!) -> chorus -> prayer -> samsara (?! I get it now) and then it was about a hundred random dead-ends before pyramid got me on the right track
