92. God damn all of you guys!

emil.y, Friday, 11 March 2022 15:47 (two years ago) link

i had actually quit playing for a few days, given up early because I was getting frustrated, but yesterday I did a speed run where instead of thinking about it, I just rapid fire started guessing words, and that seemed to help a lot. that and the path being a little more linear.

think when I move slower, I tend to just do the synonym olympics rather than being instinctual

i read to 69 position (Neanderthal), Friday, 11 March 2022 15:51 (two years ago) link

satisfying 29 today, just pipped by two of my friends by one guess which is a little less satisfying

I solved Semantle #41 in 103 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of -0.99. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #80. (!!!!!!!!!).
My penultimate guess had a similarity of 22.35 (560/1000).

What the hell! I never had so much trouble getting a decent score in - first 15+ word at guess #35.

why though do we get a very similar word to the one we had yesterday?

celebrating ten years of constant posting (breastcrawl), Friday, 11 March 2022 18:40 (two years ago) link

“similar” depends on your vector i think (again i use vector irresponsibly). unless you mean “a noun”.

Fizzles, Friday, 11 March 2022 19:36 (two years ago) link

see yermans point about “feedback” and me being stuck on “soloist”

Fizzles, Friday, 11 March 2022 19:45 (two years ago) link

one thing i’ve found myself doing quite early on, without any sense of whether it’s a viable heuristic, is do “city” and “country” or sometimes “urban” and “rural” to divide between “natural” and intensively human spheres. both of the last two days have been “city” based definitely but not sure that makes them the same as such.

Fizzles, Friday, 11 March 2022 19:54 (two years ago) link

another one is whether things are spatial (geography) or time based (history).

please to be clear my success rate is rubbish. however i will stick to my superstitious success heuristics. #cargocult

Fizzles, Friday, 11 March 2022 19:57 (two years ago) link

please Fizzles don’t spoiler!

celebrating ten years of constant posting (breastcrawl), Friday, 11 March 2022 20:02 (two years ago) link

as in you’re openly responding to my hidden comment

celebrating ten years of constant posting (breastcrawl), Friday, 11 March 2022 20:03 (two years ago) link

oh no! i didn’t think i was. didn’t feel opened up in any meaningful way?

Fizzles, Friday, 11 March 2022 20:09 (two years ago) link

both are about yesterdays?

Fizzles, Friday, 11 March 2022 20:10 (two years ago) link

my comment most certainly wasn’t

celebrating ten years of constant posting (breastcrawl), Friday, 11 March 2022 20:14 (two years ago) link

want to address your points too, but I’ll wait till after the next game is out

celebrating ten years of constant posting (breastcrawl), Friday, 11 March 2022 20:16 (two years ago) link

the word yesterday was so similar to day before's that I bailed on that I guessed the day before's word, thinking I needed to refresh my cookies or something

i read to 69 position (Neanderthal), Friday, 11 March 2022 20:20 (two years ago) link

sure but my comment was about your invisible comment and i don’t think anyone is going to be able to divine the solution from my comment unless they reveal yours.

Fizzles, Friday, 11 March 2022 20:31 (two years ago) link

an xpost.

Fizzles, Friday, 11 March 2022 20:32 (two years ago) link

the thing to do is not open the thread until you've done that day's puzzle

joni mitchell jarre (anagram), Friday, 11 March 2022 20:49 (two years ago) link

the point of hidden texts is that even if you do open it up you won’t get spoilers. people have been adhering to this and it was working very well.

why are we having this discussion?

celebrating ten years of constant posting (breastcrawl), Friday, 11 March 2022 20:59 (two years ago) link

i have no idea! i’m a bit lost!

Fizzles, Friday, 11 March 2022 21:05 (two years ago) link

reread my comments and i don’t see it. as you might see upthread i was being extremely cautious and apologetic about the extreme use of hidden text tags.

I solved Semantle #42 in 88 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of -2.59. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #70. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 38.25 (599/1000). https://semantle.novalis.org/

lots of blundering around, first green was in the high 800s (think it was “meal”), second was #999, “meat” - from there it was pretty straightforward - anticipating low scores today!

I solved Semantle #42 in 24 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 8.17. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #12. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 49.60 (961/1000). https://semantle.novalis.org/

19 guesses, nice easy run today: country - rural - cow - milk - beef - FOUND

Zelda Zonk, Saturday, 12 March 2022 00:46 (two years ago) link

i almost always guess food related shit cos it's dinner time when I play here, so it actually being about food made it easy

I solved Semantle #42 in 65 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 9.56. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #2. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 65.42 (997/1000). https://semantle.novalis.org/

Took me longer than it should have tbh but my first three greens were whiskey, wine and bourbon which led me down the wrong path for a while

Roz, Saturday, 12 March 2022 01:15 (two years ago) link

I solved Semantle #42 in 70 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 6.11. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #20. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 13.68.

pie >> food (at guess 52) >> vegetables >> meat >> FOUND

Three decent scores in a row, it does feel more forgiving.

I solved Semantle #42 in 48 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of -0.94. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #9. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 65.42 (997/1000). https://semantle.novalis.org/

i was literally just thinking, as i was walking over to my laptop to do the semantle, carrying a muffin, "i wonder if there's ever gonna be a food semantle" but i still waited until 9 to guess "food." i then guess "muffin" which wasn't in the green.

, Saturday, 12 March 2022 03:14 (two years ago) link

Found it in 32, first guess in green was 999/1000

JoeStork, Saturday, 12 March 2022 04:08 (two years ago) link

Found it in 36, got from animal to chicken very quickly then dicked around with all manner of farmyard animals for a while before realising the animal and the meat have the same word.

ledge, Saturday, 12 March 2022 08:07 (two years ago) link

I've got to 999 on my 13th guess which is a record for me, but lets see how many more it takes

I solved Semantle #42 in 25 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 7.58. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #11. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 49.83 (964/1000).

I had just browned some diced beef when I started today's so it was a lucky guess to get in early

calzino, Saturday, 12 March 2022 09:34 (two years ago) link

i got semantle #42 in 40 guesses.

in today's pimantle i put in quaternion as a silly guess and it turned out to be #17

I solved Semantle #42 in 101 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 6.97. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #13. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 66.01 (998/1000).

As someone easily amused, I did chuckle when things like 'supper (cold)', 'kebab (cold)' kept appearing.

Grandpont Genie, Saturday, 12 March 2022 10:14 (two years ago) link

I solved Semantle #42 in 19 guesses. My best score so far, by some distance (I think my previous best was 62).
My first guess had a similarity of 8.07. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #11 with “cattle”, straight in at 897.
My penultimate guess had a similarity of 55.25 (985/1000).

lol I tried Fizzles’ urban-rural thing, and zooom! “rural” 17.32 > “farm” 31.92 > “cattle” 897/100

celebrating ten years of constant posting (breastcrawl), Saturday, 12 March 2022 10:20 (two years ago) link

this total lack of frustration and struggle today is disappointing tbh. It's a buzz to hit a high green early but not 999 ffs!

calzino, Saturday, 12 March 2022 10:24 (two years ago) link

As for yesterday’s minor kerfuffle (so a kerfizzle then?), there aren’t many metrics by which “speaker” and “manager” aren’t similar kinds of words, even within the subcategory of nouns. I had a score of 967 for “president” the day before yesterday, and yesterday it scored 966. Same thing for “chairman/woman/person”.

I do also feel that nouns in general seem to be extremely overrepresented in this game. More verbs, prepositions, adverbs, et cetera, I say. Make the word categories more unpredictable.

celebrating ten years of constant posting (breastcrawl), Saturday, 12 March 2022 10:27 (two years ago) link

did I miss a rare clusterfizzle? blimey whatever next. Some fair points there about how this puzzle could be improved.

Feel like today's was very easy to get, but my brain just wouldn't skip to the right answer. Had pretty much all of the top ten greens, but not the actual target!

emil.y, Saturday, 12 March 2022 14:37 (two years ago) link

Also I was very sad because my path went from animal -> pet -> the correct area. Don't want to eat my pets ;_;

I solved Semantle #42 in 13 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 9.70. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #4. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 22.58. https://semantle.novalis.org/

guess #4 was fish which got me quickly to beef & meat the closest greens possible

johnny crunch, Saturday, 12 March 2022 14:59 (two years ago) link

Messed around with lots of forms of potato after I got that and 'roast' early on, plus many other typically roasted vegetables, before trying the holy quaternity of chicken, beef, pork (then would've been lamb)

kinder, Saturday, 12 March 2022 18:39 (two years ago) link

I got Semantle #43 in 27 -- y'all are gonna get it way faster than me as usual, I'll bet

sarahell, Sunday, 13 March 2022 00:33 (two years ago) link

nah i had a shocker! 117 guesses

first greens were all mealtimes so i got super stuck trying to think of variations on “lunch”!

lemmy incaution (emsworth), Sunday, 13 March 2022 00:38 (two years ago) link

i have a tendency to start with words related to building systems and guessed "vent" and "door" and when "door" was closer than "vent" i guessed "welcome" and then was close

sarahell, Sunday, 13 March 2022 00:44 (two years ago) link

I solved Semantle #43 in 86 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 3.09. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #17 (948/1000). My penultimate guess had a similarity of 31.39 (579/1000).

Should have been about 50-something. I faffed about with the military after “salute” at guess 17.
