he was very funny in Corporate, playing a different role that is kind of a spoof of the part he usually plays

na (NA), Thursday, 10 March 2022 15:08 (two years ago) link

lol, at least he is believable as a tv police chief

I read many of the Michael Connelly Bosch novels years ago, but have been working my way through them again recently as audiobooks. I’m up through The Closers (2005), the 11th I think.

Listening to them in the middle of the night when I haven’t been able to sleep has been comforting. I’m always looking forward to the next book.

I haven’t seen the TV series yet and am not sure I want to at this point

Dan S, Thursday, 17 March 2022 00:46 (two years ago) link

Lol, I’m the opposite. Read only 1 of the books ages ago. The TV series is excellent (we’ll, at least thru S3).

It's pretty good, great cast and more than most cop shows (outside of CBS dramas) there's a discomfort you have to face in rooting for the kind of cop you'd probably really hate IRL because Titus Welliver is so charismatic.

Season 2
The security guard/bad guy mastermind was too oily and obviously the villain from his first appearance, six episodes before Bosch figures it out - can't decide if that was on purpose or if the actor overplayed it.

papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 17 March 2022 00:58 (two years ago) link

I already have such a mental picture of who Harry Bosch, Kizmin Ryder, Jerry Edgar, Irvin Irving, Terry McCaleb, Graciela Rivers, Buddy Lockridge, Jack McEvoy, Teresa Corazόn, Keisha Russell, Grace Billets etc etc are from the books

Dan S, Thursday, 17 March 2022 01:00 (two years ago) link

also Eleanor Wish and Rachel Walling

Dan S, Thursday, 17 March 2022 01:23 (two years ago) link

I was surprised when the S2 villain was revealed but I'm also kind of dumb

Vinnie, Thursday, 17 March 2022 01:38 (two years ago) link

The TV show does a great job of wrapping up some story lines within a season while carrying other storylines - like the murder of Bosch’s mother - across seasons.

damn, Jamie Hector is 46.

three weeks pass...

just going in on s7, 9 mins in and no crimes get on with it get on with it

less jazz more drive-bys

mark s, Saturday, 23 April 2022 18:26 (two years ago) link

S7 was the weakest but still worth watching. As someone said earlier ITT, they kinda speed thru the S7 plot in order to wrap up a bunch of storylines. Several callbacks to characters from previous seasons. But still worth watching…

that's not my post, Saturday, 23 April 2022 18:39 (two years ago) link

Well, watching once lol

that's not my post, Saturday, 23 April 2022 18:40 (two years ago) link

Halfway through S5, it’s a slight letdown compared to 3 & 4. New Bosch series starts on IMDB TV lol next month?

papal hotwife (milo z), Saturday, 23 April 2022 18:44 (two years ago) link

kinda bored of lance riddick's shtick tbh, he's better than what he's bothering to give

mark s, Saturday, 23 April 2022 19:34 (two years ago) link

"all units! intitiate! initiate!" dude just say "go! go!"

mark s, Saturday, 23 April 2022 20:02 (two years ago) link

don't make me tap the use other words thread

mark s, Saturday, 23 April 2022 20:02 (two years ago) link

Lol I forgot Lance Reddick was in this show. Dude plays such a similar role in Bosch, The Wire, Fringe... he just fits seamlessly and imperceptibly into any number of police-adjacent shows

Vinnie, Saturday, 23 April 2022 23:25 (two years ago) link

bosch is being an ARSE HOLE at jerry atm imo

mark s, Sunday, 24 April 2022 15:17 (two years ago) link

^^^ is what i just said out loud

love to call in a special master lol

mark s, Sunday, 24 April 2022 16:32 (two years ago) link

Yeah Bosch is a self-righteous asshole at times and it sucks when it’s aimed a Jerry.

that's not my post, Sunday, 24 April 2022 17:33 (two years ago) link

the incel plotline seems dumb to me

mark s, Sunday, 24 April 2022 20:29 (two years ago) link

Very weird when Bosch's daughter and her friend meet the lawyer and start fangirl/boying out.

papal hotwife (milo z), Sunday, 24 April 2022 23:28 (two years ago) link

I've been reading the books and Bosch is also not that nice to his next partner Ignacio Ferras - The Overlook (2007), The Brass Verdict (2008), and Nine Dragons (2009)

Nine Dragons, focusing on his daughter in Hong Kong, is one of Connelly's more memorable stories

Dan S, Monday, 25 April 2022 01:05 (two years ago) link

I quit around the time of The Crossing as they were getting a bit samey and daft, but I wonder if they got better again. Agree 9 Dragons was a fun one, very 80s action movie – also Angels Flight, the only one where he lets his writerly pretentions get ahead of him, doing a mini-Day of the Locust riff. It’s really good! Don’t watch the show as I don’t enjoy watching Welliver.

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 25 April 2022 07:29 (two years ago) link

i kinda hate maddie tho she is a p plausible daughter of her dad i guess

mark s, Monday, 25 April 2022 19:55 (two years ago) link

I like that her introduction was “I haven’t seen my daughter since she was three, she’s good I guess IDK” and then it turns out she’s somehow exactly like her father. Strong genes.

papal hotwife (milo z), Monday, 25 April 2022 21:08 (two years ago) link

you can tell by the size of his head

mark s, Monday, 25 April 2022 21:29 (two years ago) link

I'm really liking the Mickey Haller series (The Lincoln Lawyer, The Brass Verdict, The Reversal and The Fifth Witness so far). There is some overlap between Bosch and Haller in the novels, because *spoiler* we learn they are half brothers. Is he much of a figure in the streaming series?

Dan S, Tuesday, 26 April 2022 00:04 (two years ago) link

No but the first season of The Lincoln Lawyer is dropping on Netflix in a couple of weeks

groovypanda, Tuesday, 26 April 2022 06:43 (two years ago) link

lol i just watched the final ep w/o realising it even was the final ep, thinking "oh this incel strand wound up strangely early"

(i was pretty sleepy, maybe i slept thru the highlights)

mark s, Tuesday, 26 April 2022 17:21 (two years ago) link

(this was last night, i'm watching it again to see what i missed)

mark s, Tuesday, 26 April 2022 17:21 (two years ago) link

(ok turns out i hadn't watched the last ep at all, netflix must have played it to the end while the screen was off)

mark s, Tuesday, 26 April 2022 18:02 (two years ago) link

lol it's a banger

mark s, Tuesday, 26 April 2022 18:03 (two years ago) link

anyway in conclusion, bosch is a DICK

mark s, Tuesday, 26 April 2022 19:55 (two years ago) link

Watching Reacher before starting Bosch was a mistake, I keep hoping for him to go sicko mode and he hasn’t really done that since throwing the bad captain through a window.

papal hotwife (milo z), Tuesday, 26 April 2022 20:05 (two years ago) link

it mildly grinds me that his dog is called coltrane but he never listens to coltrane -- it's always plangently melancholy late-nite old-times-were-best spot-the-tune jazz

which is fine, i like it too, but just sometimes he shd throw on interstellar space

mark s, Wednesday, 27 April 2022 08:57 (two years ago) link

i like maddie, not a great actress if i'm being "objective" but she captures a lot of mannerisms i see in my daughter so she is capturing "something." looking forward to more honey chandler in the new series!

buzza, Wednesday, 27 April 2022 09:03 (two years ago) link

legacy now

hope it's a bit nippier on its pins than PICARD

mark s, Friday, 6 May 2022 18:54 (one year ago) link

maddie getting a v hard time from all the non-baby cops is funny and she deserves it bcz she annoys me

me chuckling at this spry* and toned character meant to be 90+

checking the actor: william devane, a pretty spry and toned 82 tbf (son of FDR's chauffeur, played robert kennedy in macbird in 1966)

*i mean yes he's in a wheelchair

mark s, Friday, 6 May 2022 20:25 (one year ago) link

(i am the only ilxor who's ever mentioned or maybe even thought abt macbird, a very forgotten item i imagine, which is nevertheless oddly important to me)

(nothing to do with BOSCH tho)

mark s, Friday, 6 May 2022 20:28 (one year ago) link

ok, started the first episode of the new series

I’m thinking “hmm, ok I can deal with this” so far, but then the credits hit and wtf is this theme song

mh, Sunday, 8 May 2022 02:46 (one year ago) link

yeah the title sequence visually is a decent successor to the orig but the music is a hard miss
4 episodes in this just feels like a more or less natural S8 vs a reboot S1
not bad, still waiting to see where it goes
as a resident just love the location shooting, always on point, Maddie running around the Hollywood Reservoir just makes me think of my own jaunts around there

buzza, Sunday, 8 May 2022 09:32 (one year ago) link
