The thing that makes Freaky Styley so great is that it is obviously a group of stoned white skaters doing their conception of a funk album; the fact that it actually ends up being a funk album is a bonus.

i'm not sure why i'm listening to the red hot chili peppers again but one hot minute underrated, big fan of when "deep kick" turns into a built to spill song

One Hot Minute has some really good tunes on it! the only one I recall not liking outright was uhh, "My Friends".

"Warped" also a forgotten single

I loved One Hot Minute when it dropped. Love the bridge of "Walkabout." Love the weird Anton Corbijn video for "My Friends" that they ended up pulling. Love Flea's little vocal turns on "Deep Kick" and "Pea." Love the insane structure of "Warped." Would revisit this over listening to any of the albums that followed

when he was interviewed during the build-up to the follow-up album (when Navarro was still in the band, before he bailed and John came back), Guitar Magazine asked him what the diff between the new album and One Hot Minute was, and Dave said "this one might actually be good"

"Warped" was so sick for a 15 year old me. Monster Chad Smith drum part that's super fun to play, totally weird song structure and off-time verses that turned RHCP into a wonky art band, the guitarist for Jane's Addiction plays for them now, Kiedis/Navarro kiss at the end of the video to freak out the squares

I hate One Hot Minute. It's really bad. Not much else to say. Glad you all can find something to enjoy in it though.

The band decided they would have a talk with Navarro and attempt to convince him to enter rehab. The discussion escalated into a heated dispute. Listening again. I know it's not cool to critique the use of autotune, but it really is making things even worse here. I do love Frusciante's anti-shred solo. Almost gives the song a John Martyn-esque quality. But that can't save it. Very yawn.

I hate this band but spend an awful lot of time thinking about them.

I feel like ranking chili peppers albums by which best capture the spirit of the chili peppers is demonstrably not the way to rank the best chili peppers albums

During the Californication sessions, there was a song called “Fat Dance” that Kiedis loved but the rest of the band vetoed. He was still smarting about it while promoting the album, telling Spin in 1999, “It was funky, it talked about the beauty of ass.”

I'm picturing a five year old kid with his arms crossed and all grouchy eyed.

I was lollin at the Dave Navarro section, how he’s allergic to playing funk licks and tried to cram in every cool guitar part from ritual into the first song of one hot minute
Makes me want to hear the album but I know I wouldn’t even make it through the first chorus

Brad, what’s the egregious fault that rates the Red Hot Chili Peppers album “Californication” so low for you?

it sounds like shit and there’s a feeling of whiplash between their funk stuff and their newfound pop-rock focus. just feels inconsistent and broken as a record though most of the songs are very good, even the deep cuts cf. this velvet glove, easily, porcelain, purple stain

i’m listening to the new one and “aquatic mouth dance” is amazing

i baseline like all of their stuff lol love to learn this about myself :(
