Semantle: Can you think like a computer?

I find the "figuring out the jump" the hardest, because I almost always hit words that are in the 15-20% range long before I get any greens, and obviously finding similar words to those in the 15-20% are just going to have you endlessly finding other 15-20% words.

yesterday I started to get better at that, like thinking of other words that might be related to that grouping of words that aren't really synonyms and trying some of those out instead. each time I get int he green I can't figure out how my brain made the leap, but it does.

I just like typing in words too much

this is my problem. my impulse is to just try a million words and go wherever free association takes me, even if those words aren't really hits. and trying every variation of a word and close synonyms even if they aren't really hits.

and then i wonder why it always takes me 100+ tries. though i think i'm also just really bad at free associating to a wide array of concepts. i latch onto things

Onto #38 and fuck this. Over 200 guesses, many greens, my highest at 994/1000... and still I can't get it.

From the sublime to the ridiculous in fact, as yesterday I got it in 17. Just when you think you're getting the hang of it, you're not getting the hang of it.

Took me 108 to get to green but then 40 more to strike gold.

I gave up. Had a shit day and don't feel like chasing endless dead ends.

362 guesses lol. was completely misled - it took me more than 200 guesses to get past my highest green at 808/1000

Would not have got it without a thesaurus. I was floundering in the 800s and typed in the first related word I looked up, bingo.

What are people's average # of guesses? I'm averaging 155.73 at the moment.

makes me so mad when the solution is just another form of a word i’d entered dozens of guesses earlier, which happened today.

yeah that is annoying, feels like wasting guesses typing e.g. guess guessing guesses guessed, but sometimes it has to be done.

found todays in 284 with thesaurus help which seems unnecessary in retrospect.

did today's, #38, in 36. hit on a low green on my 4th guess and it was quite a pleasant route to the word e.g. cloud, thick, envelop, surround

hah! I had the plural of the secret word like about 60 odd guesses ago.. durr!

Gave up on #38 at 268 guesses.
Closest I came was "lingering" at 984/1000 - you can see my frustration.

I used ilxors' hints to finally get it in 230 ... i first got closer with building > urban > area so I could have been stuck in a maps and building plans rabbit hole for hundreds more

I did terrible. Tried on two devices and didn’t get anywhere without hints here. Ugh.

I couldn't get it because my first green was a series of words like "related", "relationship", "other", "linked", and 'related' was in the 900s, but there was no way for me to get "surrounding" from that

Got to 945 at guess #36 and haven’t been able to get closer. Did get to 910 at guess #85 by making an earlier cold word plural, but that’s it. Now at #113. Think I’m letting this one go. It’s been a hard enough day already, this is just additional frustration. Guess I didn’t knock on wood hard enough yesterday!

my first green was "meal", which wasn't very helpful at all! the effect of having your expectations wrongly primed by a misleading first green can be CATASTROPHIC imo

solved #39 in 52 guesses. I feel like I'm getting a lot better at this, although I also still quit a lot. Again best approach just seems to be total random/free association until I get close. Sometimes I listen to a podcast while I'm doing it and just randomly enter words I hear in the podcast.

I actually thought it was going to be worse than that, once I got going, since all my early greens were superlatives, and there are obviously so many of them! It was only once I hit on 'abundance'that I started to make useful progress.

Took me ages to get anywhere near a green, then I got stuck exactly where ledge did, then finally got the additional senses of caring and large to get me off the attractive track.

xp PBKR - i feel like my extensive experience with charitable fundraising was a hindrance because i got over a dozen high 900s based on words used in the context of thank you letters written to donors but then i thought about the tendency for the words to be polysemous and i thought of the guesses that were somewhat close that were related to food and i got it.

63 today, only 2 greens then a lucky leap to the correct answer, always a nice double take when that happens

xp Several ppl have mentioned it, but the first green you get and the route you take can really make things harder or easier for you.
