A few things from Epic Games Friday:

This split tape from Sullow/The Silver Field is really cool, Sullow is psychedelic banjo Henry Flynt hillbilly vibes with some wild improv drumming, The Silver Field reminds me a bit of Current 93 but more chill and not as annoying, really sick tbh, been listening to it non-stop.

I mean, you could call this jazz, but it's so fucking weird, Mike Cooper still has it

Came out last year, can't remember where it caught my eye, but this is pretty sinister, liminal electronic noise

This record is really something else.

https://matchess.bandcamp.com/album/sonescent

It reads like hyperbole, but it is doing a lot of interesting work psychoacoustically— hi-pitched sine waves will emerge from nostalgic folk-pop into muffled fiddling...Like how Basic Channel was doing "a basement techno club from several blocks away," this is like "someone fiddling with synthesis while a band practices next door and also the dumpster is being unloaded outside the window." Really neat.

some recent stuff i've enjoyed

https://bogdanraczynski.bandcamp.com/album/addle
"Marking a change from the high-octane jungle tekno braindance for which he is most commonly known, here we find the Polish American musician in a more melodic and zen-like place of peace, which is ergonomic and decluttered, whilst also bittersweet and tinged with melancholy."

https://intlanthem.bandcamp.com/album/recordings-from-the-land-islands
interesting story behind this on the page, the final track is absolutely stunning

Gerry Franke - Found Myself or Just I’m Dead

https://adelamede.bandcamp.com/album/szabads-g-3
"Szabadság is a navigation. This debut by Adela Mede, recorded in her family home on the Slovakian border with Hungary, searches through the personal, familial, cultural, folkloric and geographic of her past and present."

Some friends have been recording very strange duets under the name Glovenathans. I like this new one, seems to be mostly guitar duets or guitar w/ synth.

"Experimental electronic guitar manipulations intertwine with wandering acoustic ambience. One foot in 1970s Germany and the other in the woods, rivers and mountains of northeast Scotland."

Rough-hewn and exhilarating, EL Khat's second album "Albat Alawi Op.99" is a deep dive into leader Eyal el Wahab's Yemenite roots and their inspired re-imaginings. A careening orchestra of percussion, horns, strings, electricity and el Wahab's own DIY instruments. Mesmerizing retro-futurist sounds.

Two releases bunged together in recent Wire review section because they're both on Constellation and both quite 'disintegration of popsong' but also both are completely addictive and great:

Eric Chenaux: https://ericchenaux.bandcamp.com/album/say-laura

Kee Avil: https://keeavil.bandcamp.com/album/crease

technopolis, Wednesday, 27 April 2022 20:55 (one year ago) link

Chenaux sounds great, thanks! Doesn't make sense to me why it was paired with the other, but oh well.

(If you like the Chenaux, you might like the Maria Elena Silva record from last year, 'Eros')

i bought the tape of this one, nice lowkey release: https://tssstapes.bandcamp.com/album/nido

i got really into this chinese label earlier this year (dunno if i read about them on ilx or elsewhere), but this new release from them sounds great to me: https://zoominnight.bandcamp.com/album/killed-as-time and i also really like the albums of beatles covers by mai mai also on their bandcamp

Saw her a couple months ago and was deeply impressed. I generally don’t like the flute; I have maybe three favorite flautists, but she’s one of them, and so is Eric Dolphy.

New Ashley Paul doubles down on the best bits (wobbly drunk clarinet) of 2020's Ray; is tremulous and gorgeous and miraculously avoids overt preciousness:

I don't know if I really get this thread's remit, but the new Rachika Nayar is impressive. I like it a lot more than her previous album. The way it bursts into ravey technicolor at times never fails to delight (though it might be alienating if all you want is Grouper-y banks of melancholic guitar fog), and in general this sounds like a big step up in ambition and achievement to me

rob, Friday, 2 September 2022 14:49 (one year ago) link

nxd, Friday, 2 September 2022 15:03 (one year ago) link

it's kinda just 'post-rock except cool' but i like that. definitely more ambitious than her previous work

I did get the urge to listen to Seefeel after that final remix track, so you're onto something there. But does that imply post-rock isn't already cool? :(
