I think this should be the Chili Peppers album where Flea finally spits a verse and proves once and for all who the best vocalist in the band is.

From his memoir:
I started coming up with funny little songs. One was gritty and bluesy, a kind of a rap, “A mama and a papa and a baby Lu, all got something for me and you, so wrap it up quick and put it in the oven, it’s comin’ out quick so don’t forget the stuffin’.” Who knows what it meant. I was singing it one day alone in my bedroom, all earnest and feeling the funk, when my sister walked in, mimicking me and laughing. I was so embarrassed I wanted to crawl into a hole and be alone forever. I’d been found out. A few years later, I was singing along to the Beatles version of “Till There Was You,” when my mother heard me and said, “Michael, that sounds horrible, you are so out of tune!” I’ve always been insecure about my singing voice.Thirty-five years after that, I was doing a recording session with my friend Jewel when she asked about some songs I’d written and recorded a couple of years previously. It was stuff where I played acoustic guitar and sang, and she’d generously warbled backgrounds on it. I replied that I’d stopped that project, because I just didn’t have a strong singing voice. She said, “Flea, I think your voice is charming.” Then the producer of the session, Daniel Lanois, chimed in, “It could be charmingly bad!” Ha, I think Daniel was onto something.

I will always be bored by post-BSSM Peppers Chi-Peps because they started writing music that forced Kiedis to actually sing and his voice sounds a young Mr Magoo on heroin

Nobody outside New York gives a shit about James Murphy. Kiedis is a national — nay, global — embarrassment.

Man that Baby Lu rap isn't any worse than some of the stuff that actually ended up on the first RHCP album:

The thing that makes Freaky Styley so great is that it is obviously a group of stoned white skaters doing their conception of a funk album; the fact that it actually ends up being a funk album is a bonus.

(lol soz that's a response to the thread title, not you Brad).
One Hot Minute has some really good tunes on it! the only one I recall not liking outright was uhh, "My Friends".
"Warped" also a forgotten single

I loved One Hot Minute when it dropped. Love the bridge of "Walkabout." Love the weird Anton Corbijn video for "My Friends" that they ended up pulling. Love Flea's little vocal turns on "Deep Kick" and "Pea." Love the insane structure of "Warped." Would revisit this over listening to any of the albums that followed

it's funny how much Navarro didn't like the album.
when he was interviewed during the build-up to the follow-up album (when Navarro was still in the band, before he bailed and John came back), Guitar Magazine asked him what the diff between the new album and One Hot Minute was, and Dave said "this one might actually be good"

"Warped" was so sick for a 15 year old me. Monster Chad Smith drum part that's super fun to play, totally weird song structure and off-time verses that turned RHCP into a wonky art band, the guitarist for Jane's Addiction plays for them now, Kiedis/Navarro kiss at the end of the video to freak out the squares

I hate One Hot Minute. It's really bad. Not much else to say. Glad you all can find something to enjoy in it though.
Never knew about this until right now. Golly, I wonder why it was never released!

The band decided they would have a talk with Navarro and attempt to convince him to enter rehab. The discussion escalated into a heated dispute. In April 2010, Navarro discussed this incident, stating that: "One was my drug use at the time. The other was musical differences. Anthony says it was because I tripped and fell over an amp while on drugs. I say that he was on more drugs than me at that point. We both had a loose relationship with reality. Who do you want to believe?"[52]

A few shows into the U.S. leg, Kiedis injured his leg badly while engaging in what he calls "eyes-closed robotic dancing."
At least he has a sense of humor?

Okay, fine. Here it is:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EuWBWxHs18
Listening again. I know it's not cool to critique the use of autotune, but it really is making things even worse here. I do love Frusciante's anti-shred solo. Almost gives the song a John Martyn-esque quality. But that can't save it. Very yawn.

Dove deep into the catalog of one of the world's biggest rock bands, The Red Hot Chili Peppers. Explored the highs, the lows, de humps, de bumps, the psychos, the sexys. Helluva journey! Let's get born in the state of Mississippi! https://t.co/E8xvSwGee5— Steven Hyden (@Steven_Hyden) March 25, 2022

During the Californication sessions, there was a song called “Fat Dance” that Kiedis loved but the rest of the band vetoed. He was still smarting about it while promoting the album, telling Spin in 1999, “It was funky, it talked about the beauty of ass.”
