totally missed the Young Guns homage. we were really confused about what was going on in that sequence. thanks for the clip, will share with my gf who didn’t grow up here and who I’m fairly certain has never seen YG

I really love how clunky the dialogue is in this series. idk how much is improvised but I dig how they talk like real people do, starting sentences without really knowing where they're going and all that. like what was that line they say to Gideon? "I'd like to continue being in a parent and child relationship with you" ??

funniest moment for me was Jesse trying to panic hide the body

I felt like the reveal of what went down outside the reporter's airbnb was a little bit of a letdown, which is crazy because everything that happened was over the top! Just so many episodes where the mystery remained.

Bringing hand grenades instead of guns and the reporter still dies from a gunshot because.. of course he does

A crazy but not surprising fact I looked up the other day is that the 3 McBride HBO shows have collectively only ever received one Emmy nomination: sound editing for Vice Principals season 2.

The scene with Kelvin's new youth group, the next generation of muscle men, was both a good parallel to the motorcycle ninjas and an extension of the incredibly awkward homosocial environment Keefe (or are we calling him Queef now?) and Kelvin exist in.

They actually said grooming

mh, Tuesday, 1 March 2022 15:51 (two years ago) link

"You brought grenades?" did give me quite an LOL.

actually, I'm not someone who laughs out loud at the TV, I mostly only do that when around other people, but I was pretty much waking up the household the other night at this ep. made up for the disappointing previous episode by a long shot.

also, now there's a new definition for ABC besides "always be closing".

I think a big thread of next year will be an investigation into Zion's Landing, because there's no way the prominent investors could completely disappear not only from the investment, but from their megachurch/etc without people (like Joe Jonas) sniffing around, wondering what happened. like I'm sure some government officials might be interested in how the Gemstones suddenly acquired the entire project.

We also never found out what Schwartzman’s comment about Aimee-Leigh meant? Maybe someone w another grudge a la Junior.

Chris L, Tuesday, 1 March 2022 21:36 (two years ago) link

he just wanted dirt on the Gemstones and was seeking an easy way into the conversation, an accidental admission.

yeah we see that with Lyle, he says "I know about you and the kids" and he fesses up right away even though they are talking about two very different things

This final episode was dumb and silly and I guess worked, because the show is ultimately kind of dumb and silly but works.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 3 March 2022 01:52 (two years ago) link

I thought the toilet baby was a tad too dumb and silly, even for this show.

Bixby in a Samsung I know it's Siri-esque (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 3 March 2022 02:41 (two years ago) link

the tone of this show is all over the place. that's what makes it cool though

main thing I didn't like is that trope where one person figures out the twist, then a second person figures it out in a different way before the first person can tell them. I wonder if maybe the episode was originally supposed to be 15-20 minutes longer.

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 4 August 2023 02:43 (nine months ago) link

Yeah just finished it, that final scene with the monster truck rally did a great job, as is this show's bread and butter, of being an absurdly over the top parody while still getting the benefit of the emotional beats of the thing it's parodying

as, crazy as the locusts were, all the Bible Bonkers stuff that preceded that was even more, uh, bonkers

yes! the hurricane thing was so stupid & hilarious … and the DANCERS omg

ahaha Tiff on piano was hysterical

also the “you’re not my daddy” scene in the dressing room had me wheezing

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 4 August 2023 06:26 (nine months ago) link

I rewatched a bit because I missed some dialogue and there’s a moment where Jesse is putting Dusty and his wife in the little isolation thing for safety during the locust scene and Amber asks “what did he say?!” because Jesse was inaudible over the isolation and the locusts and Dusty interpreted it as “he’s looking for titties” and I cracked up

Could listen to Walton Goggins say “Baby Billy’s Bible Bonkers” for an awfully long time without getting tired of it

We've been cruising through the current season not least because my wife *loves* this show, but honestly I've been struggling a bit with the relentless assholery of everyone (albeit mitigated by the pervasive puerile weirdness of the whole enterprise). It's kind of just a trashy(er) "Succession," though again, soooooooo weird.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 21 August 2023 12:25 (eight months ago) link

Finished this season. This show is so bizarre I can't believe it's on the air, let alone chugging through multiple seasons. It's like HBO gave a bunch of precocious home schooled 15-year olds and their dads a blank check to just explore their general batshit ideas and crusade for on-screen dick depiction.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 31 August 2023 01:48 (eight months ago) link

so what youre saying is it’s glorious

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 31 August 2023 02:12 (eight months ago) link

xp

It's not like this is the first successful Jody Hill/Danny McBride joint on HBO. Clearly it's a thing people like.

when you see early Goggins in The Shield you don't much of a sense, or at least I didn't - that he had the potential to be so fucking funny
