Semantle: Can you think like a computer?

Now that I know the answer I remain baffled. The 999/1000 word was “violin”. I thought for sure that meant it had to be viola or cello. From a musical perspective piano is so much further away than any number or other possible musical instruments or words.

Totally same. I tried every band and orchestral instrument, musical terms, component parts like "reed" and "armature," and would never have guessed piano because I don't think of a piano as part of the orchestra (rightly or wrongly). Too much human brain!

One thing I think a lot is that often the answer is something much easier and more common/less specialist than I think it is. Except for IDEOLOGICALLY or whatever.

I've found I'll quite frequently get it after a very cold guess, because at that point I'm searching around a bit more widely than just using synonyms for my top guess. Big exception was getting ideology when I knew it should be a different form of the word, that's my only jump from 999 to the correct answer I can think of. My route today was through crime and criminals, getting up to hackers and terrorists and assassins, then to the right answer.

route for me was via oft used helicopter, airplane, rocket, satellite, intelligence. if i’d hit intelligence at 997 without coming in via satellite, i would have been doing a lot of guessing in the wrong area!

Heh kinder that wasn’t my route (which was similar to emil.y’s) but I got it immediately after that last green too.

I’ve also found that I tend to waste a lot of guesses trying out different forms of a word which was very confusing today cause assassin was ranked higher than assassinating, but hoaxing was higher than hoaxer, and pretending was green but pretender was not even close to warm

Tried it today for the first time, got it in 153. Interesting feeling to look at your old guesses and see how they're connected to the answer, especially the cold ones hovering around 25 similarity. Started to get it with "assassin" but still took me another 50 guesses to figure it out.

Thought I was going to string it out for a lot longer. Closest for ages was 'relevant' at 907, on a whim I tried 'nice', and remembered its old fashioned meaning of 'precise/exact', which somehow led me to 'fitting/appropriate'.

my problem is now, using the same intro words as my initial guesses has me always following the same pattern of guesses, which sometimes results in gold, but often times gets me wasting ten guesses and going down the wrong path.

I just like starting with "tree" because it's easy, but it almost always winds up an 8-10%er, then I wind up guessing "building", "house", and then sometimes that means I'm coming at it from the wrong angle.

I'm going to go random today and see how that helps.

looking at the top 1000 this one seems really impenetrable if you don't happen to guess a medical/anatomy term.... i was stuck on "death" as my top guess forever but i wasn't thinking about it in a medical sense as much as an existential/terminal sense. didn't have a breakthrough until i guessed "comatose," which i still wasn't really thinking about in a medical sense........

Yeah, that does confuse me too. Like, even if certain words are more closely associated because of the nature of the computer’s reading list - I get that - but I still don’t understand how secondary meanings (or words that might have a secondary set of semantic associations) are pushed right off the list.

Got to 487 in 4 and 995 in 11 - and that’s where I’m at still, after 48 guesses. Time for a break.

Towards the end I may have wasted a few guesses by choosing words that were too scientific, like lymphocyte! It's hard to know - maybe this helped me focus on terms which were biological in nature.

My quickest result yet. Guess 7 was container (16:03), guess 16 was vessel (25.31). After faffing around a bit with other meanings of vessel, I tried artery (guess 26) and leapt to 851/1000. Then it was mostly swift and linear, through aorta, lung, kidney to liver.

fuck. no greens till #106 blood then got it in five. highest (but not green) for a while was hospital, should have played around with that more maybe. or, looking at the full word list, maybe not.

I had a go with the mirror site yesterday, trying some earlier ones i didn't play (or did but forgot about, so fickle is memory). Had more instances of taking over 100 to get green. Was stumped for ages with one where glue, cloth, tree, wood were all green but nothing else close to any of those words was. (It was candle.)
