What about with Gillan, 1984 and after?

60’s - 70’s purp is where I live

the '74/'75 Purple might have evolved into something like Wild Cherry, but Coverdale's vocals were too buttrock for that to happen

I start with the Gillan era and last through Coverdale/Hughes (Made In Europe is a surprisingly good live album) but they don't have a single front-to-back great album. Always a few great songs and a bunch of lazy filler.

The Perfect Strangers album is better than it had any right to be.

Ironic that "Lazy" is probably their best filler-song, on their best album.

I think the trade off of vox between Coverdale and Hughes is so cool

Wait'll you hear my opinion that the first Captain Beyond record is better than any Purple record!

Coverdale (pompous)

I mean, I get this but they also talk in the Burn reissue booklet about how Coverdale as a nerdy, chubby, spotty guy when they found him so it makes it extra funny that he just has this ridiculous voice. I love that shit, personally.

(It did take some time to get over my gut ugh the Whitesnake guy reaction)

God forbid someone in a band with Ritchie Blackmore be pompous!

It's not personal with Coverdale, I just don't buy his attitude. I'm not even that familiar with Whitesnake.
You could say Rod Evans sounds just as full of himself, but on his better songs and the Captain Beyond stuff I linked above, he communicates something more than just puffed-up self-agrandisment. Evans is also uncommon and interesting as a baritone singing hard rock.

That’s actually pretty awesome, idc what you think of Joe Satriani

Josefa, Sunday, 13 March 2022 20:02 (two years ago) link

there’s not a long list of guitarists I’d bank on being able to nail that solo

calstars, Sunday, 13 March 2022 20:14 (two years ago) link

Wouldn’t mind hearing Eric Johnson’s take
