Gave up

sorry Mario, but our princess is in another butthole (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 23 February 2022 17:02 (two years ago) link

Gave up at 447.

my first white flag today, got most of the closest ones leading up to 998

nxd, Wednesday, 23 February 2022 17:31 (two years ago) link

I'm stuck at 998, just hit 300 guesses. Going to go away for a while and do something else. I will not be defeated!

lol emily i was about to give up but reading this i’m like, no way!

especially as it would break my streak of one (1)

Fizzles, Wednesday, 23 February 2022 20:20 (two years ago) link

I'm never giving up again, play to the death every time! I took a couple of breaks from it earlier and resisted the urge to rage-quit.

calzino, Wednesday, 23 February 2022 20:28 (two years ago) link

i’m on guess 49 and have had seven in the 900s.

Fizzles, Wednesday, 23 February 2022 21:03 (two years ago) link

no way devilish should be 1.64 imo.

Fizzles, Wednesday, 23 February 2022 21:19 (two years ago) link

the way computers think these days, eh!

calzino, Wednesday, 23 February 2022 21:22 (two years ago) link

i think it was the most recent one where i typed in "world" and got a similarity of 0.00

had to ponder for a moment if this had any deeper philosophical significance and then decided it was just a bug

lemmy incaution (emsworth), Wednesday, 23 February 2022 22:23 (two years ago) link

FUCK YOU PUZZLE #25 I BEAT YOU IN 657 GUESSES HAHAHAHA FUCK YOU YOU FUCKING FUCK

emil.y, Wednesday, 23 February 2022 23:19 (two years ago) link

that's the spirit!

calzino, Wednesday, 23 February 2022 23:19 (two years ago) link

Apologies for the outburst, but I feel it was warranted.

emil.y, Wednesday, 23 February 2022 23:21 (two years ago) link

Gave up after 200 guesses and one mid tier green. almost all of the top few hundred are adjectives and maybe I rarely guess adjectives? Either way don't think I would ever have got this.

ledge, Wednesday, 23 February 2022 23:29 (two years ago) link

I think I got this because all my biggest scoring greens where adjectives - I was on the hunt for one.

calzino, Wednesday, 23 February 2022 23:41 (two years ago) link

had to talk my semantle-skeptic partner and our 10-yo kid through #25, was interesting coaching and nudging them towards the answer, trying to suggest how the machine would think

lemmy incaution (emsworth), Wednesday, 23 February 2022 23:43 (two years ago) link

I solved Semantle #26 in 81 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 0.96. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #24. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 25.02. https://semantle.novalis.org/

literally guessed similar variations of said word in the first 30-40 guesses, this one I think was easier to solve because there are less possible variants of words on this particular 'topic' than in #25. also I quit focusing on synonyms so much.

sorry Mario, but our princess is in another butthole (Neanderthal), Thursday, 24 February 2022 00:42 (two years ago) link

I solved Semantle #26 in 125 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 0.31. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #35. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 21.07. https://semantle.novalis.org/

Enjoyed this one - tricky but not maddening. My Green Path was not misleading and the mental effort of scrabbling around for related words paid off.

lemmy incaution (emsworth), Thursday, 24 February 2022 00:46 (two years ago) link

I gave up on #25; #26 took me 106 guesses and I also found it fairly straightforward once I got in the green.

Lily Dale, Thursday, 24 February 2022 00:53 (two years ago) link

same. yesterday's was flummoxing so I probably burned 10 extra guesses trying to be cutesy thinking it was trying to trick me, then realized no this is very linear

sorry Mario, but our princess is in another butthole (Neanderthal), Thursday, 24 February 2022 00:55 (two years ago) link

Wow, gave up on 25 and don’t think I’d ever have got it. Just seems like a massive leap from where I was at, even as close as #996.

war mice (hardcore dilettante), Thursday, 24 February 2022 00:58 (two years ago) link

I solved Semantle #26 in 45 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 11.54. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #27. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 15.31. https://semantle.novalis.org/

Well, that was a better result than yesterday’s fiasco, and a pretty satisfying line of progression, from musical instruments through the word “classical” to the ancient world, and then suddenly “philosopher” which skyrocketed me to 987, at which point it was a steady circling the answer (and kind of a lucky guess when I hit it, TBH).

war mice (hardcore dilettante), Thursday, 24 February 2022 01:34 (two years ago) link

Got it in 136. Echoing everyone else, this was much more linear than most of them.

Zelda Zonk, Thursday, 24 February 2022 02:14 (two years ago) link

I solved Semantle #26 in 193 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 0.22. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #108. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 36.80 (667/1000).

my first one! now i'm hooked for life i guess.

, Thursday, 24 February 2022 03:08 (two years ago) link

I solved Semantle #26 in 45 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 2.00. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #17. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 30.30 (27/1000). https://semantle.novalis.org/

Definitely a lucky guess. My top three before that lucky guess were poet, essayist, author so I can't even tell you why I guessed what I did. Agree on this being easier / more linear but I don't mind at all.

brisk money (lukas), Thursday, 24 February 2022 04:19 (two years ago) link

fun when you can convince yourself "no I wasn't just guessing, I was tapping into my inner semantic network"

brisk money (lukas), Thursday, 24 February 2022 04:29 (two years ago) link

I solved Semantle #26 in 104 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 22.90. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #7. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 12.80.

could’ve been faster tbh, I’d gotten the root word pretty early on but didn’t think to try the other forms even after it was clear it was looking for an occupation.

For the quick finishers, do you guys have a strategy for which words/word types you punch in at the start to have a high chance of getting in the greens? In the past few games, it’s taken me close to 100 guesses before I even get warm

Roz, Thursday, 24 February 2022 05:51 (two years ago) link

I solved Semantle #26 in 73 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 9.64. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #20. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 50.40 (967/1000). https://semantle.novalis.org/

I'm OK with this. nouns seem to be the easiest.

adam t. (abanana), Thursday, 24 February 2022 05:58 (two years ago) link

I don't normally finish at all, and when I do get to green is it definitely luck. I don't know why I decided to guess sailor today. Soon after, maybe because I was watching Bill Bailey, I tried comedian and it was pretty straightforward from there.

brisk money (lukas), Thursday, 24 February 2022 05:59 (two years ago) link

I solved Semantle #26 in 27 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 1.70. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #8. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 21.95.

...much better than yesterday which I couldn't get!

Jaime Pressly and America (f. hazel), Thursday, 24 February 2022 06:41 (two years ago) link

I solved Semantle #26 in 21 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 4.21. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #9. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 8.09. https://semantle.novalis.org/

pissed it today

i try a few things, not necessarily definitively successful obv. one is choosing words that potentially have more connections - eg “run” that you can the break down in terms of direction if needed - “direct” “move” “spill”

another is to choose different grammatical elements especially where there’s been no movement on the similarity, eg noun, adjective, adverb, verb. this partly to avoid the trap of always thinking of nouns.

obviously after being v “cold” the need to think across widely disparate sets or concepts but that’s obvious and intrinsic to the game.

all that said i only got a hook (tend to consider this “above 10 similarity) after 15 today. reached 954 in another 8 but am now stuck.

i didn’t get yesterday’s but should have thought in terms of psychological costliness, instead i was trapped in “complexity” as an attribute of an object and didn’t get out.

Fizzles, Thursday, 24 February 2022 08:05 (two years ago) link

I got my highest scoring guess in this one, my first 999 with scholar. it was never going to take a lot of guesses after that.

calzino, Thursday, 24 February 2022 08:08 (two years ago) link

Today was my best yet. Got it in 36.

Grandpont Genie, Thursday, 24 February 2022 09:04 (two years ago) link

I solved Semantle #26 in 86 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 2.90. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #26. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 27.94. https://semantle.novalis.org/

joni mitchell jarre (anagram), Thursday, 24 February 2022 10:19 (two years ago) link

@Calzino: I dunno, I got that one as my 68th guess, and still ended up needing 110 guesses. I got too hung up on synonyms etc for a little while.
First time I actually finished one of these.

I solved Semantle #26 in 110 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 5.70. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #7. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 33.87 (454/1000).

Looking back through it now, it's funny to realize that my 11th word was history. At some point I also tried historicist, which I suppose is proof that I don't think like a native English speaker.

Øystein, Thursday, 24 February 2022 11:50 (two years ago) link

I think sometimes that the more heavily verbose people playing this might struggle more because they overcomplicate it, or maybe that's just bollox and some people get lucky!

calzino, Thursday, 24 February 2022 11:57 (two years ago) link

Stuck on 999, aaargh.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 24 February 2022 13:20 (two years ago) link

^ That was me today. Got 999, then did another 100 guesses, then gave up.

Eyeball Kicks, Thursday, 24 February 2022 13:24 (two years ago) link

it was my third guess after the 999 that did it, but like I say if you can't be brilliant be lucky.

calzino, Thursday, 24 February 2022 13:26 (two years ago) link

I've now got 6 of the top 10 and 12 of the top 20. I hate this game.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 24 February 2022 14:26 (two years ago) link

Found it on guess #288. My 999 was guess #191, and I was going to give up on guess #291, so that was lucky.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 24 February 2022 14:34 (two years ago) link

instead i was trapped in “complexity” as an attribute of an object and didn’t get out.
― Fizzles, Thursday, February 24, 2022 8:05 AM (six hours ago) bookmarkflaglink

I did the same yesterday and ultimately didn't get it. I would have kept working at it but accidentally restarted my browser so I lost yesterday's page.

Onto today's!

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Thursday, 24 February 2022 14:40 (two years ago) link

Oh well okay I just completely randomly got it on guess #69 after dancing around a parallel track for about 6 guesses.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Thursday, 24 February 2022 14:42 (two years ago) link

I solved Semantle #26 in 73 guesses.

Much better than yesterday's though I did hit a synonym rut for a bit, needed to widen my net rather than trying *every single variation* of a word. I needed to look at types of scholar rather than trying to hit every direct synonym for it, of course I did - also needed not to try every school of philosophy when I hit philosopher (while it could have been 'sophist' it was highly unlikely to have been 'deconstructionist', come on brain.

emil.y, Thursday, 24 February 2022 15:40 (two years ago) link

61! fucking finally. jesus. i had history on guess 16 annoyingly. the hook into this was dream from which i got to memory.

Fizzles, Thursday, 24 February 2022 21:25 (two years ago) link

did it in about 90. Route was sort of book, librarian, scribe, archivist

kinder, Thursday, 24 February 2022 21:31 (two years ago) link

I solved Semantle #26 in 38 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 8.99. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #26. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 30.92 (126/1000). https://semantle.novalis.org/

Route was artist, writer, biographer

ledge, Thursday, 24 February 2022 23:28 (two years ago) link

I solved Semantle #27 in 58 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 2.12. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #5. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 29.48 (775/1000). https://semantle.novalis.org/

Felt relatively straightforward - or as straightforward as Semantle ever gets - real glad i didn't get too trapped in wrong guess hell today!

lemmy incaution (emsworth), Friday, 25 February 2022 00:33 (two years ago) link

Yep, pretty straightforward, got it in 39.
