I'm never giving up again, play to the death every time! I took a couple of breaks from it earlier and resisted the urge to rage-quit.

Apologies for the outburst, but I feel it was warranted.

Gave up after 200 guesses and one mid tier green. almost all of the top few hundred are adjectives and maybe I rarely guess adjectives? Either way don't think I would ever have got this.

I think I got this because all my biggest scoring greens where adjectives - I was on the hunt for one.

had to talk my semantle-skeptic partner and our 10-yo kid through #25, was interesting coaching and nudging them towards the answer, trying to suggest how the machine would think

literally guessed similar variations of said word in the first 30-40 guesses, this one I think was easier to solve because there are less possible variants of words on this particular 'topic' than in #25. also I quit focusing on synonyms so much.

Enjoyed this one - tricky but not maddening. My Green Path was not misleading and the mental effort of scrabbling around for related words paid off.

I gave up on #25; #26 took me 106 guesses and I also found it fairly straightforward once I got in the green.

same. yesterday's was flummoxing so I probably burned 10 extra guesses trying to be cutesy thinking it was trying to trick me, then realized no this is very linear

Well, that was a better result than yesterday’s fiasco, and a pretty satisfying line of progression, from musical instruments through the word “classical” to the ancient world, and then suddenly “philosopher” which skyrocketed me to 987, at which point it was a steady circling the answer (and kind of a lucky guess when I hit it, TBH).

Got it in 136. Echoing everyone else, this was much more linear than most of them.

Definitely a lucky guess. My top three before that lucky guess were poet, essayist, author so I can't even tell you why I guessed what I did. Agree on this being easier / more linear but I don't mind at all.

could’ve been faster tbh, I’d gotten the root word pretty early on but didn’t think to try the other forms even after it was clear it was looking for an occupation.

For the quick finishers, do you guys have a strategy for which words/word types you punch in at the start to have a high chance of getting in the greens? In the past few games, it’s taken me close to 100 guesses before I even get warm

I don't normally finish at all, and when I do get to green is it definitely luck. I don't know why I decided to guess sailor today. Soon after, maybe because I was watching Bill Bailey, I tried comedian and it was pretty straightforward from there.

I got my highest scoring guess in this one, my first 999 with scholar. it was never going to take a lot of guesses after that.

Today was my best yet. Got it in 36.

@Calzino: I dunno, I got that one as my 68th guess, and still ended up needing 110 guesses. I got too hung up on synonyms etc for a little while.
First time I actually finished one of these.

Looking back through it now, it's funny to realize that my 11th word was history. At some point I also tried historicist, which I suppose is proof that I don't think like a native English speaker.

I think sometimes that the more heavily verbose people playing this might struggle more because they overcomplicate it, or maybe that's just bollox and some people get lucky!

Stuck on 999, aaargh.

it was my third guess after the 999 that did it, but like I say if you can't be brilliant be lucky.

I've now got 6 of the top 10 and 12 of the top 20. I hate this game.

Found it on guess #288. My 999 was guess #191, and I was going to give up on guess #291, so that was lucky.

Much better than yesterday's though I did hit a synonym rut for a bit, needed to widen my net rather than trying *every single variation* of a word. I needed to look at types of scholar rather than trying to hit every direct synonym for it, of course I did - also needed not to try every school of philosophy when I hit philosopher (while it could have been 'sophist' it was highly unlikely to have been 'deconstructionist', come on brain.
